Everton U17's 1, Paramatta Eagles 0.

While the Everton supporters were sunning themselves with a wee dram in Glasgow, another bluekipper.com reporter went to Netherton to see a very fit Under 17's team play a Paramatta Eagles team from Sydney, Australia. Everton were worthy winners thanks to a penalty scored by Paul Hopkins, just reward for the effort he put in. He wasn't alone. All of the squad, who put on a blue shirt ran their socks off. This coupled with their talent saw them through. A testimony to all the watching coaches, Neil Dewsnip, Gary Abblett, & Alan Harper.

Other players to mention were Jay Harris in midfield who battled for position, & when he got it sprayed the ball about with some crisp passing. The centre back pairing of Hughes & Kearney was solid as a rock, not giving the willing Eagles players a chance. Hughesy also has a great touch for a centre back, & a long raking pass, a la Alan Stubbs, but his stayed on the island more than Stubbsey's. More than not setting up willing runners to set up a chance.

The whole team were a credit. The only fault was that they never put all of their chances away. Nevertheless, Neil Dewsnip was happy with the way the Everton team went about their business. Neil says: "I was very happy with the fitness levels, & pleased with all the boys performances." (28/07/03)
