Moyesy kept a full strength team, with Marcus Bent playing up front with Jimmy Mac coming in for Leon Osman, who was on the bench. Wright was fit to play against his old team. Joey took his place in place of the unlucky Davie Weir. We started brightly with Tiger Tim getting forward and heading straight into the goalie's arms. Tommy Gravesen gave Everton the lead early on with a free kick which took a deflection and ended up in the onion bag. Edu lost the ball and took it out on Jimmy Mac with a terrible challenge. Everton players were incenced and after some pushing and shoving, the Brazilian was booked. Everton suffered a kick in the balls when Marcus Bent went off with a leg injury. With him went our pace. Big Nick Chadwick came on. Jimmy Mac's shite season continued when he found himself running along the byline and instead of cutting it back to the waiting Tommy Grav, who would have scored, decided to take a few more touches and that was the end of that. From then on it was all Arsenal, with them playing some fast flowing footy. They scored an equaliser with a great goal. We did well to hang on for the next 15 minutes, but we did. Not only that but we finished with a flourish with Jimmy Mac forcing the Arse goal to save. Then Sandro Pisto got forward and was unlucky not to give Everton the lead. He let the ball run as he shaped to hit a shot with his right foot. Then hit it with his left. The ball seemed to be moving in slow motion, as it hit the inside of the post and rolled along the goal line, only to be cleared. Half Time: Arsenal 1, Everton 1 The second half was a disappointing affair. Arsenal scored early on with a typical clever goal. Everton won't be happy with the three missed tackles. The fans were not. The players tried but seemed very sluggish. As bad as Jimmy Mac was he never hid and nearly scored. Moyesy tried to inject a bit of magic pace into the game, when he replaced Stevie Watson with Leon Osman with 20 minutes to go. The fans tried to lift the players after a bit of ole football by the gooners, but the players couldn't respond. Arsenal made the tie safe with a third goal. Again a great goal. Moyesy had put a full team out to try and take on this young Arsenal side. They won because they had the better players. Mcfadden had yet another chance with a great chance, but found the goalie instead of the goal. Will he make it? This was very disappointing, quoting Walter Smith. This was a chance to win a trophy, but we were not up to it. Star man was hard to pick, but I went for Tim Cahill, who kept going to the end. Full Time: Arsenal 3, Everton 1 |

David Moyes on The Edu Tackle says: “It all turned on the referee not sending Edu off for his tackle. We are 1-0 up and if Edu is then sent off, and it’s incredible that he isn’t, it would have made a big difference. Edu went on to be very influential for Arsenal tonight.” David Moyes on The Match says: " People probably thought it was a great goal but the boy(Quincy Owusu-Abeyie) charges past three or four of our players and knocks them over like skittles. That was pretty average from our point of view. But all credit to Arsenal, they’ve got some very good young players coming through. They are very fortunate to have so many players to choose from whereas all we’ve got are the ones we had tonight. Our lads have been tremendous this season and tonight will be treated like a blip and we’ll get on with our business again on Saturday. We’ve had a great start and we probably haven’t got enough players to be in too many competitions. We’d rather be in but we’re not and it’s over and done with." |

| Everton won't be making many changes like the arse. Marcus Bent may sit this game out as we play the rotation system (Everton Style). Benty has sore hamstrings (god bless). Big Dunc is favourite to step in if he recovers from the thigh strain, which kept him out of the Chelsea game. Dickie Wright is hopeful he can overcome his back injury to play against his old club. Jimmy Mac and Joey Yobo could also play, leaving Big Nige, Tommy Grav and Davey Weir on the bench. Moyesy says: Highbury is a great place to go for a cup-tie and we will be doing our best to get through to the last eight. We are having a good run in this competition but to start talking about us being able to get through at Highbury is premature. But we want to play the better teams in big games like these - that is what we want for our future.” Alan
Irvine says: “We’re going to Highbury
believing that we have a real chance to progress. Arsenal see it as
a competition for helping to develop their young players who are on
the fringes of the first-team, while we see it as an opportunity to
get to a cup final and hopefully get into Europe. So, we’re looking
at the game differently. It’s a crucial game for us and we feel we can
win it. But then again, if we were going to play Arsenal’s first-team,
I’d still be confident. It is going to be a tough game - it’s Arsenal
away and we’re not going to estimate their young players. They can play
exactly like their first-team do. You’ve always got to be conscious
of the fact that Arsenal can break quickly. We’ve got to make sure that
when we’re attacking, we’re organised defensively. We’ve also got to
make sure that we cause plenty of problems for them. We’ve got to make
sure that when we get the ball we keep it - and when they do get the
ball, we will have to win possession back quickly. There is no doubt
that we would have rather had a home tie again. We would have felt that
we would have been happy to take on anyone at Goodison." Cockney Toffee's Everton XI To Start: Wright, Hibbert, Stubbs, Yobo, Pistone, Osman, Cahill, Gravesen Kilbane, McFadden, Ferguson. Cockney's Bet : £10 Everton 2-1 (10/1), £10 Kevin Kilbane First Goalscorer (12/1) |

Everton will come face to face with a young Arsenal side. No Terry Henry and co but still some names in the team. Moyesy says: “Arsenal have a great conveyor belt of talent coming through and they went to Manchester City with those lads and won. I watched the tape of that match yesterday and while they are a reserve team, I wouldn't mind spending the money some of them cost. They are the best club in the country and have some fabulous players, and even behind those lads they have more fabulous players, and we will find we are up against some of them. We know this is another tough game." Alan Irvine says: "Arsenal away is a very tough game, but on the positive side, we know that it won’t be Arsenal’s strongest team, albeit there will be very good players on display in that team. You’ve got players like Flamini who played in the UEFA Cup Final last season, Van Persie, Fabregas, so we’ll have to be on our guard." (09/11/04) |
