Jesus if ever their was a game of two halves this was it. Edge of the seat stuff from beginning to end. Everton as we know, have a superb defensive record, and love winning by 1-0 this season. Norwich have drew six of their nine, and have not being to fluent in the goalscoring department this term, so to me, nil nil was written all over this match. How wrong I was. Moyesy had the luxury of picking the same team for the third game running, and right from the off Everton were up for it. Ossie went close in the first few minutes, but England's new boy Green in the Norwich net, saved well. It was Norwich who were wearing the famous yellow strip, but it was Everton who were performing like Brazil. This may sound like I am going over the top, but the Blues opener was vintage football. Everton played the ball out of the back, and along the left flank, were Tim Cahill collected a pass just outside the box. Beating the Norwich defender with ease, the Aussie pulled a lovely ball back to find Killa, who buried the ball into the Norwich net. Everton totally dominated the first half, and their superiorly was confirmed when Benty, picked up on a fantastic through ball from The Grav, and coolly slotted in past Green, reminiscent of his Everton account opener against Palace, many moons ago now. I am maybe doing our back four a disservice, as the lads made the first half look easy. Norwich did threaten at times, but the back four looked solid, especially Hibbo, who snuffed out their only threat in Huckerby. The only low note for me, was Nige, looking at times a bit unsure on whether to come for crosses, punching rather than catching on the odd occasion. Maybe the weather played on his mind a bit, as the heavens opened. Half time came, the result not in doubt, and an evening's entertainment to plan, but whatever Moyesy said with their cuppa's obviously did not sink in. Half Time : Norwich 0, Everton 2 As expected Norwich came flying out of the blocks, but we expected our cast iron defence to handle what was thrown at it. No chance, it took the home side two minutes to half the deficit, when pacy forward Leon McKenzie, left Stubbsey for dead, and planted a low drive through Nige's legs. The home crowd sensed a come back, as the noise level rose, and for the first time in a long time, Everton looked all over the show. After eleven minutes of the re start, Norwich were level, when from a deep corner, Stubbsy again was beaten to the punch, by Johnson who laid on Francis to tap home from three yards out totally unmarked. Moyesy must have been seething. Coasting to clinging on, Norwich were rampant. Brave decisions needed to be made, and with half an hour to go, Moyesy brought on the Big Man, and Stevey Watto for surprisingly Tim Cahill and a quiet Ossie. Watto was on to help out Tony Hibbert, who had his hands full with trying to quell a lively Darren Huckerby. Within minutes, he had volleyed him in the barnet, well played, it shut him up. The game changed from the way one way traffic it was, to a nip and tuck battle, played at a frantic pace. Moyesy substitutes combined to change the game back in Everton's favour. Stevey Watto picked the ball up out wide from Tommy Grav, and he delivered a perfect cross, to who else, but Duncan Ferguson. The moment it left his noggin, you knew it was goal bound, and Everton were back in the lead. It was nice to see the Big Man get the winner, as he has come in for a bit of stick from some quarters over his effort, and it was a two finger salute to his knockers. Well played. Within minutes, Moyesy brought on Joey Yobo, for Benty to sure up his rear guard. Norwich had one cleared of the line, and a few long range efforts, but the ref blew up, and we went berserk. Well played lads, unbeaten on our travels, what more can we say. My bluekipper Starman goes to Tony Hibbert. Not the greatest distributor in the Everton set up, but he would run through a brick wall for you. Had the difficult task of trying to keep Darren Huckerby quiet today, and did a good job in doing so. They talk about Arsenal, being one of the best domestic sides in English footballing history, and not many can argue, with them going for their fiftieth unbeaten match tomorrow. Fact is we stand currently three points behind them with a third of the season nearly gone. Now I am not going to make any ludicrous statements about us, but all I will say if hats off to Moyesy and the boys, for turning a very mediocre Premiership side around from last season. We are now a side whose work ethic, battling qualities, and togetherness, make us once again a side other teams will not be keen on facing. Full Time: Norwich 2, Everton 3

Moyesy says: “I enjoyed it up until half-time and then again when the final whistle went!. It was a good game for the neutral but maybe not for those connected with both sides. It was harsh on Norwich perhaps but we’re taking everything we can get. I would have taken a point because Norwich have got some good forwards with plenty of pace. I told the players at half-time that the next goal would be important because had we made it 3-0 it would have been very difficult for Norwich to come back. But they got a goal early on and the cavalry came at us. But to be fair we defended well and made it hard for them to score. We needed to change the pattern of the game and in the end we got it right. We were under pressure and had to try to change the pattern of the game. We gave them a bit more to think about and I thought all three of our goals were good ones.” |

* Superb decision by the Norwich groundsmen to water the pitch before kick off, minutes before the heavens opened. Heard of weathermen. * Its been a Long time since we sang ' Were gonna' win the League', but still seems like yesterday. Well in the few thousand, who made it sound like forty thousand. |

Everton return to one of their most special away grounds in recent history. It was at Carrow Road in 1987, that left back, and part time lunatic Pat Van Den Hauwe, scored the winner to give the Blues their second title in three seasons. Moyesy is expected to name an unchanged team for the trip to Norwich, which is still bad news for Joey Yobo, and alike. Everton's superb defence of late is keeping out the Nigerian International, who is having to sit it out on the bench with Big Dunc, Stevey Watto and the rest. Jimmy Mac has recovered from his dead leg, and has travelled with the squad, but for Gary Naysmith the game has come too early for his for his ankle injury to mend. It is getting to easy now naming the side, as I fully expect Moyesy to keep the same eleven from last week, as Everton try to keep on avoiding relegation. Could go second, fingers crossed. Everton from: Martyn, Hibbert, Yobo, Stubbs, Pistone, Weir, Bosnar, Cahill, Osman, Carsley, Gravesen, Watson, Kilbane, Bent, Ferguson, Campbell, Wright, McFadden, Clarke, Naysmith, Chadwick. Lavo's Everton XI To Start: Martyn, Hibbert, Weir, Stubbs, Pistone, Cahill , Carsley, Gravesen, Kilbane, Osman, Bent. Lavo's Bet: £20 on Everton to win 1-0 (Evens) / £10 on Marcus Bent First Goalscorer (7/1) (22/10/04) |

New Boys Norwich, are finding like most promoted clubs, life is hard in the Premiership. They seem to be the draw specialist's with six of their nine matches ending up with a point gained. These points have managed to keep them just outside the relegation zone, and they will face a hard struggle to stay up this season. Manager Nigel Worthington is full of praise for his counterpart Davey Moyes, and he believes that the sale of Wayne Rooney has been the catalyst for Everton's best start in 25 years. Nigel
Worthington says: "They've started well after coming through
some turmoil in the summer what with takeovers, the finances and the
'will he stay or will he go' Wayne Rooney stuff. I think it has been
good for them. They got good money for him and the coverage is more
on the team than on an individual now. You can see that on the pitch,
with the results they have got. |
