CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?...WE'RE HAVING A LAUGH!!!!!!! Before the game all the talk was about one man, and would he score the first goal. Most of the lads had at least a tenner on Beattie for the first goal, but we decided against the 5/1 shot, and followed our theory that we are most likely to score from set pieces and chose the higher priced defenders.

The game started in bright sunshine and the blue masses were in good voice. Again the gaffer chose to play Yobo in midfield, I cannot agree with this tactic. Only 4 minutes were on the clock when Timmy rose like only he can in the box and brought a fine save from the Southampton keeper, only for Beatts to lash it home from 6 yards. He must have forgot where he was for a second as he raced away arm aloft only to take it down straight away.

More chances followed too, Cahill had a great chance from 6 yards only to head over, then wee Jimmy went through on goal, and Beattie had a tremendous volley tipped wide from the keeper. Then it all started to go wrong, players started giving the ball way, and Southampton started attacking us down the flanks, which has got to be the way to play when you have a big target man. How Big Dunc must have envied Harry's tactics. Crouch is not just a beanpole though, he can play a bit, and him and Camara were now running our defence ragged.

They got the inevitable equaliser from a throw in near the corner flag, when Crouch rose to head home, whilst our defence and keeper just seemed to stand there static. We needed half time to come as Southampton were by now all over us.

HALF TIME 1-1

The second half brought a change, Bent coming on to replace the ineffective Carsley. We needed to get some support to Beattie by now,as the ball was just coming back at us all the time, and Cahill wasn't getting a chance to get forward.

The 4-5-1 system has had its critics this season, but you have to agree it has been effective. It doesn't, however, suit Beattie. It has to be Bent, or we play 4-4-2.

Southampton edged in front when Camara raced through our left hand side and finished smartly. Moyes then decided to throw his last two subs on with 25 minutes to go, again is it me, or is that not the cleverest idea, what happens if you have an injury?

Things got a lot worse before they got better. To me it seemed like we lacked a real leader on the pitch, yes The Saints were playing well, but so had other teams this season and we were able to overcome them, but I really couldn't see us getting back into the game. We miss Gravesen, only time will tell whether we should have kept him till the end of the season, but we really missed his leadership at Southampton. Ferguson and Arteta were involved early on, the latter seems to be a neat little player, who may be the key to unlocking defence's in the future, lets hope so. But the Ferguson effect soon swung into action, with us aiming long hopeful balls from the half way line to the big man.

Time was now running out and you felt as though they would get a third rather than us get a 2nd. Then Crouch ran two thirds of the pitch with the ball and shot at Martyn instead of running into the corner. Nigel sent the ball long towards our forwards, The ball eventually landing at the feet of Marcus Bent, who took on the last man in front of the blue hordes and lashed home a spectacular equaliser.

The full time whistle soon followed and you have to say we got out of jail there. Saints fans were as dejected as we were last season at the same ground, which incidentally is a nice stadium but for the access, which is very strange when you are trying to get back into the city centre, walk ways and tunnels that just get so full of people, that you don't really move that far.

All in all we were lucky to get a point, but if we play like that for the rest of the season we really are having a laugh. (Paul Mac 07/02/05)

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "It was a good point for us and I would have taken four points from the two games this week. It’s hard to win matches and Southampton have a good home record. They don’t lose many and we are delighted to get a point We scored early and late and the stuff in between was dross.

It wasn’t the stuff we like to play but that happens at times and let’s give the players some credit for the way they kept at it.

Moyesy on Beatts: "He’ll be happy with his goal because, importantly, it got us off to a good start but we couldn’t build on it. It was a great finish from James and when he gets his fitness level up he’ll get more for us.

Moyesy on Benty: " He’s played nearly 90% of all the games and he’s been excellent this year. He went off the boil a little bit around about November. I’ve seen in his attitude and in his performances that he’s coming back to form."

Benty says: "It was nice to score a goal because I haven’t scored for a while. I’ve been on the subs bench and it’s been frustrating. I tried to push it past the defender so I could get my shot away and pushed it a bit too far. But fortunately I kept my head down and struck it well and it hit the back of the net.

James Beattie’s goal settled his nerves. They got the equaliser and then came at us and we know we were lucky to get something from the game. We know we can play better than that and the goal at the end was very important because we weren’t at our best today." (06/02/05)

Everton Team News

New boy Mikkel Arteta has traveled South with the Blues, but I think Moyesy will resist the temptation of starting the new boy, but bring him on later in the game. Everton's only worry is Leon Osman who jarred his knee in the Cup last weekend, but he should be ok to carry on with his fantastic form. Jimmy Mac has proved at last that he is a top class player in the making, and his MOM performance against Norwich, should convince Moyesy that he is worthy of a starting spot in the Sky live clash. I think the unlucky player will be Joey who may have to drop back to the bench, as Moyesy uses his tried and trusted at the back. Definite starter will be Beatts, who return's to his old stomping ground, and will relish the chance to silence the boo boys. If Dunc makes his usual appearance from the bench, he will clock up his 200th appearance for the boys in Blue. Well played lad.

Moyesy on Beatts, says: "I don’t think he has anything to prove to the Southampton fans at all. He proved everything while he was down there. He scored goals for them, he gave them terrific service, so I don’t think anyone could complain that he made the move in the end. I think he will get a good reception from the fans down there.

Moyesy on The Match says: "It’d be great if we could get the same result as we did against Harry and Jim at Portsmouth. They’ve taken on a big task at Southampton, but if anyone’s capable of turning things around, it’s Harry. He’s been a master in those situations before and it wouldn’t surprise anybody if he did a similar job now.

Moyesy on Nige says: "He’s been an important player for us since he arrived at the club. I think his experience is vital - and that’s why we recalled him. Richard Wright is a terrific goalkeeper, who I have a lot of faith in. He knows that there are a couple of games that he should have done better in, but Nigel’s return was due to how he played prior to getting injured. He has been excellent for us. (05/02/05)

Lavo's Everton XI To Start: Martyn, Pistone, Weir, Stubbs, Hibbert, Kilbane, Mc Fadden, Carsley, Osman, Beattie, Bent.

Lavo's Bet: £20 Beattie to Score in The Match (2/1)

About The Opposition

Midfielder Nigel Quashie hopes to make his Southampton debut after his £2.1m move from Portsmouth, having recovered from a knee injury. Graeme Le Saux is back after six weeks out and Henri Camara and Olivier Bernard make their home debuts.

Southampton's form of late has been that of the proverbial roller coaster. Home wins against the Shite, and Pompey in the cup, have been countered with patchy away form. One thing with a team managed by Harry and Jim, is that they keep goping to the end. Tell Tiny that the shit bag Jamie know's plays for them.

Claus Lundekvam says: "The mood in the dressing room is pretty good and what we have to try and do now is get a result against Everton. They are very well organised and don't concede many goals but I believe we can beat anybody on our day and I think if we score we can get something." (05/02/05)
