What The Fans Say About Bucharest

* After seeing the message on your site from Bucharest Bar owner Colin Martin, I contacted him and he said the place was going to be packed with Evertonians and he had 150 T-Shirts made specially. See you all at John Lennon and we're on coach 22 over there. The Jukebox looks like it'll be the place to be. Just hope the game is better than Sat ....... Mick & Brian. (14/09/05)

* Hi guys. I have been reading your comments on Bucharest. I wanted to put you straight. Things have gotten a lot better here in the last year. The police are on strict instructions about fucking with the tourists now the euro is prefered as is sterling as long as the bills look mint. The taxis to use are euro Fly taxi, meridian, speed taxi and taxi 2000, most of the others will rip you off. Fly taxi is the only taxi operating from the airport. It costs a little more but they don't add anything. Taxis are 20p a kilometer but you will get a surcharge from airport about a quid. Buy the way, word of warning. There is no such thing as the tourist police. Tell em to piss off. From what I've been hearing most of the bars have boosted thier prices while you guys are here. But not me. The average price for ciggies is about 70p but you can't get all brands. Beer is about pound a pint. Food is dirt cheap unless you want Mcdonalds or kfc then you will pay european prices. I have live music at the bar Wednesday and Friday not Thurday because I think we will be too busy. My Bar, "The Jukebox" is located at 22 sepcari close to hanul manuc in the uniri area which is central. If you neeed any help call me 0040 722 911 830 my name is colin and I'm happy to help. My bar will be open 24hrs aday while you guys are here and your all very welcome unlike most of the bars I'm not putting on any security i will trust you guys to police yourselves anyway see ya soon. Colin. (14/09/05)

* It says on the UEFA website that they play their European games at the National stadium. Looks much bigger and better. Andrew Colwell. (01/09/05)

* Hello! I am a fan of Dinamo Bucharest. The stadium suck's unestly but we won't play on that stadium against Everton. Anyway Everton is a very strong team but I trust our boys and I hope at a close combat and maybe a triumph for Dinamo. By the way : Witch is the most loved team in Liverpool ??? I am sorry that my English is not perfect . Good luck with Fulham! I'll see u in Bucharest! Cosmin Vaideanu. (01/09/05)

* Was in Bucharest briefly in 2000. As I remember most things made of concrete, shit roads, lots of beggars. Stopping briefly on the outskirts for a toilet stop, we were approached by hairy slavic types who wanted to 'buy' the female members of the group I was travelling in! Might of changed since though! Come on you Blues. Cheers for such a decent website. Alex in York. (01/09/05)

* Having supported the Peoples Club from all corners of the globe I now work in a place called Constanta.
I fly ibto Bucharest to get to work
tips - DO NOT use a credit card unless there is no alternative - get your loot in UK. WELL IN ADVANCE. A pint and a pizza should cost you less than 2 quid. The people are friendlier than the average Yeovil supporter, therefore enjoy both the day and the result. If you are married stay that way - if not mind the women!
Scouse.
(01/09/05)

* IF YOU ARE OFFERD MONEY ON THE BLACK MARKET BE WARY OF MEETING PAUL DANIELS .GANGS WILL OFFER YOU A GREAT DEAL THEN COUNT THE MONEY OUT IN THEIR HAND AND PALM YOU A LOAD OF TOILET PAPER . GOOD LUCK WE MUST GET OUR SHARE OF THE BREAK,S THIS TIME. TONY Q (01/09/05)

* I've worked all over east Europe and the Middle East and Bucharest is the only place I've ever had serious problems. I did get to see Dinamo (2nd from top) get stuffed at home by Astra Ploesti (3rd from bottom) a couple of years back though. A few points Everton fans should watch out for:

1. Thieves posing as drugs police roam in gangs, jumping on unsuspecting tourists. One approaches pretending to sell drugs, then his accomplices appear 'arrest' and search them removing any cash they find.

2. Using mobile phones in public is risky - muggers will nick them and run

3. It is illegal to take photographs of any official building - on pain of instant arrest

4. Taxi meters are generally fixed to read way over the proper rate. - but there is a metro station right outside the stadium - Stefan Cel Mere

5. There are wild dogs everywhere in Bucharest - they bite, and there's a serious risk of rabies.

6. The Dinamo stadium is nothing special. As you note it's small and open. The time I was there they were selling beer, coffee and some food inside the stadium. As far as I recall there was little by way of separation between the sections. Cheers David. (01/09/05)

* Funny I read on the Tourist Info that the local deliacy is tripe soup and spicy sausage that's me deffo going on no overnighter ,,, probably get better fed on the Dracula Blood Tour. Also another tip the city is very basic but the locals are very friendly. So it's not that bad after all eh! The beers cheap but it won't be no bottle of Bud will it. There is a MACDONALDS. Roll on 15 Sep can't wait to go to PHEASANTSVILLE,,, see you all there xx Nasiye Hill. (01/09/05)

* Hi I thought I would let you know that I own an English bar in Bucharest and I would be willing to lay on some kind of party for the supporters when they arrive here the night before or even after the game if you know anyone that might be interested can you please let me know by email at colinmartin@rdslink.ro or 0040 722911830 thx. The bars name is "The Jukebox" and it's located at 22 sepcari right in the center of bucharest. Colin Martin. (01/09/05)

Very Rough Guide To Rumania by Welsh Rich (Take it or Leave it)

Hotels - get them online asap - no arsing about and bartering with price get to the coast, cheaper, hoteliers will go 'kerching' and up the prices in town.

Flights - Flights are cheaper from London - Air Italia or BA (if you like an in-flight sandwich) - use the extra to get hotels, etc

Currency - Important -they've just changed their currency, so expect nonsense:

http://www.romaniatourism.com/new_currency.html

Take Yankee cash, they love it and the exchange rate is good here, sod Travellers Cheques unless they're American Express. They know what a Yankee dollar looks like, maybe not a tenner so be aware. Filthy lucre, they love
it.
To put it into context

1,000,000 old Lei = 100 New Lei = $33.11 = £11 say (always double check!!!!) so for £100 you can get £180 dollars here now in the Post Office (28/08/2005), work out the maths. No commission in the PO remember.

Long story short, if you need local cash, cashpoint it, otherwise take Yankee readies and exchange at the bureaus.

Dracula - He's every bloody where (pardon the pun), don't take plaggy bats and teeth, you'll have whale of a time explaining it to customs. He's more or less their royalty and a big tourism drive so don't knock him. Saying that, you'll come off the plane and see some twat with a Lidl trolley flogging them.

Prices - In dollars for context (but using their New Lei cash -see the links for exchanges)

One-litre bottle of water: US$ 0.40 / Film for piccies: US$ 3.30 33cl bottle of beer: US$ 0.60 / Newspaper from here: US $2.75 / City-centre bus ticket: US$ 0.18 / Adult football ticket: From US $5 (yeah, right, kerching) / 3-course meal with wine/beer: From US$ 2.40 (yeah right, kerching again)

Pubs - The Dubliners - can't remember where it is but dead expensive when I went years ago, expect prices to go up. Local grog is US $0.50c something.

Grog - Cheap but not rough, like Czexh stuff, local nonsense is plum brandy, like sloe gin, but puts you in a coma.

Tidy websites:

An essential: British Embassy   British Embassy Bucharest

A must:  Romania Tourism

Cheap Digs:   Lonely Planet_Romania

Travel guides:   Travel Guardian

Tourist rhetoric: Romania Travel Centre

Most important

You are our ambassadors for Club and country - don't be a twat - if the bizzies kick off with you, they may turn on anyone in a Royal Blue shirt, and we'll be dragged through the press. THINK! Enjoy yourselves, yeah, but no flying tables and chair nonsense, no need. Ta. Rich. Welsh Blues. (01/09/05)

The Flights

Just booked for Bucharest, going with KLM via Amsterdam costing £277 but they are going up quick, no direct flights from Liverpool or Manchester but you can go from Gatwick direct from about £180. See you there.
James T. (01/09/05)

Anyone goin to Bucharest looking for cheaper flights try ryanair.com Liverpool to Milan £30 return fly Tuesday return Friday. Then myair.com Milan to Bucharest £150 return, fly wed return Friday morning. See you in Romania. Tom Melia. (01/09/05)

10 Useless Bits of Bumph about Bucharest

1. Dinamo were formed in 1948

2. They have won their National League 17 times, the last coming in 2003/04 Season.

3. They made the European Cup Semis in 1984, going out to the shite, and the Cup Winners Cup Semis in 1990, eventually going out to Sampdoria.

4. Bucharest is known as Little Paris.

5. Bucharest was founded by a shepherd named "Bucur", whose name means "joy"

6. Bucharest is one of the few cities in east-central Europe with gambling. (No Ladbrokes though)

7. Don't become a leader in Romania. Ask Nicolae Ceausescu, as on Christmas Day 1989 he and his wife were put up against a wall and shot dead. By the way, it served him right.

8. One of the provinces of Romania is Transylvania, which of course is the home of Dracula, and Phil Thompson.

9. With Everton in Bucharest in September, all fans should catch up with the Festival of Sambra Oilor. This Festival marks the return of the sheep herds from the Mountains, good stuff.

10. Bucharest is in Southern Romania, is 88 sq.miles, and has a population of 2.1 million people.

The Stadium

Dinamo Bucharest's Stadium is officially known as the Stefan cel Mare. As you can see from the photograph, it is not the most austere of surroundings.

For those of you, who may feel the need to write to the club, all your mail can be sent to 7-9, Soseaua Stefan cel Mare, Bucharest, district 2.

For those of you hardened Blues thinking of travelling to Romania, make sure you have a ticket as the official capacity is a whopping 15,300.

Anyhow three quarters of the ground is in the open, so thank our lucky stars we drew the Romanians in September, rather than December.

Moyesy says: "We don't know an awful lot about them but I will make sure I do before we play them. I am guessing it will be a tough game, they all are. We would rather have got something easier than that but that is the way the draw goes. We hope the second leg at Goodison will be an advantage. We need to make sure we have a chance when we come back to Goodison so we have a chance of getting into the group stage of the UEFA Cup." (26/08/05)

Tiny says: It is a very difficult draw. We have been hard done by again, but that is football. After the experience of Villarreal we want to take the lessons from that into Europe and domestically. We want to see what we can do. We have had a taste of Europe and the boys are feeling confident so we will see what we can do.

It is not a bad thing to get a tough draw. It tests you as a player and as a team. We have character and now we have to see if we can adapt to losing out in the Champions League and can move forward in the UEFA Cup." (29/08/05)
