After Chelsea's recent run of bad form (three draws and a win), they decided last night to go into overdrive and turned on a Champions like performance against the Blues. Our chances were not helped by the crazy injury to Dickie 'Frank Spencer' Wright, who beggars belief with his injuries over the years. Less said the better. Anyhow, Iain Turner was thrust into his first team debut against one of the best teams in Europe, but the kid did not disappoint, unlike most of his team mates. Were as Chelsea were rampant, Everton did not threaten Cudicini's net once, and allowed the Blues of London, the freedom of Stamford Bridge.

This will not be a knocking Everton match report, but one which shows the gulf in class that we are all aware of. Chelsea's opener was a peach of a goal, with link up play from Crespo and Robben of world class standing. In fact for that period of play Chelsea were unstoppable. Nuno was lucky to stay on the pitch after his initial booking, a wild swipe at Wright Phillips led to the Londoners second, when he conceded a needless penalty. The ex City man was on fire. Two minutes later, Lampards exquisite centre was guided home by Crespo, to make it three.

Everton game plan of keeping it tight, and maybe knicking on, was undone in fifteen first half minutes of top quality football. Half time could not come quick enough, as another Arsenal of last season was feared.

Half-Time: Chelsea 3 EVERTON 0

Moyesy took off Biffa, who was getting no joy from man mountain Huth, and Nuno before he was sent off. Everton started better, with nothing to lose, and ran more at the Chelsea's back four. Cudicini's goal was protected well by Terry, Huth and alike, but Everton's persistence paid off with twenty to go, when we were awarded a penalty for handball. Mikky took it, and dispatched it coolly in to the corner of the net. Game on, no not really, two minutes later, Terry volleyed a belter in Turner's net from a corner. Game over, well it was at half time really.

We all knew it was going to be an uphill fight to get anything down there. Class is one thing, effort is another, and some of the midfield, Mikky in particular are in need of a good rest. Tony Hibbert was the best player on the park for me, but my starman goes to young Iain Turner, who came in at the eleventh hour, and handled everything Chelsea threw at him. He could do nothing with any of the four goals, and if I was Moyesy I would give the kid a go this weekend, give him a year as second string to Nige, and maybe we might save ourselves a few million in the transfer market. Also nice to see Harry Hill get a run out for the last ten. With the season's conclusion near, and Europe a possibility, it is great to see one of last season's successes back on the pitch for the run in.

Half-Time: Chelsea 4 EVERTON 1

Si on Richard Wright

Dickie looked shaky throughout the game, never looked confident coming for crosses....shit. He's just hurt himself in the kick in, so I'm going to actually have to watch the game and do this properly.

Si on Iain Turner

After the brain-doner that is Dickie Wrong stood on a sign in the back of the net (that actually asked players to keep out of the goalmouth) and knackered his ankle, Iain Turner stepped up from the bench for his debut. Apart from two cross shots that were both grabbed at the second attempt he looked quite comfortable early on...and then we went 3-0 down - he couldn't be blamed for any of them. The second half started with an excellent block from Gudjohnson who was clean through. Turner was then practically a spectator for the next 25 minutes until we scored, and then immediately conceded another of which he was again blameless.

Even though he conceded four Iain will be quite pleased with his debut. His positional play for any long range shooting was good, his kicking in open play was fine, if fact he looked capable in mosts departments. He also displayed a very flexible back.

Kipper on Davie Weir.

Not a good night for the skipper. He started well putting in a good early tackle on Crespo and beating Lampard in the air. The first goal was a disaster for Davie and showed him up for his lack of pace. A long ball by Gudjohnsen found Crespo on the move and Wier stuck in the mud. Ferrari came accross to cover Weir. Herman (honest) chested the ball and knocked it into the path of the oncoming Robben, who hit a cross shot home, while Davie was still trying to catch him up.

He redeemed himself later with a great block tackle which prevented Robben a shot on goal. The third goal Davie was at fault along with his fellow defenders who all left Crespo and another forward get away to a whipped in Lampard cross. Free header for Herman.

In the second half, Davie won quite a few headers, but by this time the game was over.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "The players were great in the second half. They got about it, they rallied and they didn't allow themselves to drop off. When it was 3-0 at half-time I was delighted it didn't get worse. Was the score a fair reflection of the game? Well I am as much disappointed by the fourth goal and the free-kick that led to it as anything because we had just got back to 3-1. I am not saying we would have gone on to win it but at least we were starting to make a mark. And to give them that goal straight after was really poor.

The first goal looked like a good goal from their point of view but I will have to watc hthe video to see if there is anything we could have done better. I am disappointed with the penalty kick, I thought that was poor and for the goal from the free-kick we should have marked and defended much better than we did. The players know it. They are normally very good and they know what they have to do. We went in well beaten at half-time but they rallied in the second half.

The confidence won't go because any team can come here and get beaten. We worked very well in the first match to try and get through and with hindsight that was our biggest chance to do so. Tonight in the first half we played our football too nice in front of them and didn't hurt them enough behind. In the second half we did much better but the game was away from us by then."

Off The Ball

* Dickie Wright, what more can we say !!!

* The Stadium Announcer terlling the crowd of the late change iof keeper for Everton. Wishing him good luck, then cheekily adding that he will need it. Cheeky bastard. (09/02/06)

Everton Team News

With Stubbsy cup tied, Matteo Ferrari will slot in. That should be the only change from the team who beat City. Dickie will still keep goal, Nige is still having trouble with his ankle. Big Dunc will not be playing, as he's still suspended. Plus the usual suspects (Pistone, Carsley, Van der Meyde and Vaughan) are still out injured.

Moyesy says: "We are going to go down there and try to be positive. We enjoyed the first game, we are disappointed that we couldn’t get through the first game so we have now got a trip down to London. I think a lot of people will be thinking that is a game that Chelsea have got in the bag so we need to try and disprove that.

We haven’t won any of our last four games against Chelsea so we need to try and win. If you are going to go through against Chelsea then you have to take any opportunities that come your way. We know that Chelsea will make chances, it is the nature of the beast as they have got players that they can bring on, players they can use in different positions. So we are going to have to be very good defensively and any opportunities we do get, we are going to have to take.

David Weir is reliable and he is having to play two or three games a week, which I would rather he didn’t have to do. But with Stubbsy being cup-tied and with Joseph away it has left us a little bit short. David has played really well but it is a situation we would rather he wasn’t in. We need Richard Wright to do well. He has waited for his time and has had a little run now so it is his chance to make his mark again. We are going to need a good goalkeeper at Chelsea, it is always the case. We needed Nigel Martyn in the first game to keep us in it and we are going to need it again."

About The Opposition

Chelsea have problems all round. Firstly Roman Abromavich has left the club this morning, and the liquidators have been called in as the club have debts off over £400m. The players have gone on strike, with Lampard, Cole and Terry leading the revolt and refusing to play. Crespo has pissed back off abroad, and Robben is back at his drama class. Peter Bonetti has been recalled in goal, with Micky Droy filling the gaps at the back. David Speedie, and Kerry Dixon will be leading the line after been talked out of retirement by new boss John Hollins.

Bluekipper don't do team news, but if we did........

Blah, blah, blah, I don't give a shit who plays out of the under worked over paid pampered arse holes. Let just work it up them. (08/02/06)
