Saturday 30th July / Kick Off 6:00PM (BST) FENERBACHE 5 - 0 EVERTON Everton:
Wright,
Hibbert, Yobo, Weir, Pistone, Davies, Carsley, Arteta
Everton started with Beattie up front on his Jack with a five man midfield. He had one good chance, but missed it. The Turks had the rest of the half, scoring twice. The first from a deflection from Tony Hibbert. The second was one from the Dickie Wright hall of fame. Everton transfer target, Stephen Appiah played the holding role well for them. Our man Harry Hill got injured, knee again. In the second half Everton went 442, but besides a couple of Ferguson efforts, nothing changed and Fernerbache made it 5-0. It could have been more. Moyesy says: “We are disappointed in the result but we knew we were coming here to play a very good side. They have been the champions of Turkey for the last two years and they are a little more ready than we are because their season starts next week. It was a game exactly of the kind we wanted it to be but we didn’t want the result the way it was. However, we came here for a reason and it showed us exactly what we have to do if we want any form of success in qualifying for the group stages. It is the first game we have lost during the pre-season campaign. We didn’t come here expecting an easy ride and if I had wanted to make sure we won every game in pre-season I would have picked easier sides to play than Fenerbahce. Tonight we lost three goals from set-pieces which we should have done better with. We have not done much work on set-pieces yet, so maybe we have a little excuse for that but it is only little.” Fenerbahce coach Christoph Daum with his fingers crossed behind his back says: "I want to thank Everton very much. I am convinced they will play a very successful qualification for the Champions League even though Villarreal are a very strong team, as we all know. Last year I saw Everton against Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was a 0-0 draw but they played tactically fantastic football and I think that when they are very well prepared they will have a fantastic performance. They have built a very good team at Everton and I wish them all the success they can have." (31/07/05) Everton have travelled East to face the Champions of Turkey without Marcus Bent. The Everton striker is suffering from tendonitis in his achilles (sore ankle to you and me), and Moyesy has decided to rest him instead of him enduring the five hour flight. Sandro Pistone has re-joined the squad after his change of heart, but Nace has stayed back at Bellefield. The only other minor worries for Moyesy are Jimmy Mac, and Li Tie who are carrying slight knocks, but nothing of note to worry about. A bonus for the fans is that Setanta Sports is showing the game live (Sky 438), with a Pay per View offering for £7.99. So send the missus to bingo, get the lads in, get the ale in, settle back and watch the Blues carry on their unbeaten Summer programme (ninety minutes, I mean). Mean while Nigel Martyn is delighted Everton are making the effort to fly to Turkey, in preparation for our fothcoming Champions League Qualifier against Villarreal in ten days time. He believes the trip will help some of the players who have never experienced European football at this level. Nige says: "We need to start testing ourselves at this point and it will be a good experience for our up-coming campaign in Europe. We are going to a foreign place, it will be quite exciting for some of the lads because it will be their first look at something different and it will be a good trial run for what is to come in the next few weeks." (30/07/05) Everton from: Martyn, Hibbert, Yobo, Weir, Davies, Cahill, Beattie, Ferguson, Kilbane, Arteta, McFadden, Turner, Li Tie, Osman, Kroldrup, Vaughan, Hughes, Wynne, Seargeant. |
