This blip is definetely now a crisis. Crisis in the terms of the worst start to a season in 47 years. One win in nine attempts. No one in the squad who will guarantee you a goal. Shit we have our work cut out. September will end with us in the bottom two, one goal scored in the League, and the prospect of three away games, and the visit of Chelski in October, it does not make for good reading, and I for one am totally pissed off with the situation.

Wigan was always going to be an uncomfortable game, their confidence is high, and ours is rock bottom. No goals in our last few games, so what does Moyesy do, keeps two forwards on the bench, and starts with Faddy and Ossie as his front pairing. Critical of that, right I am. Everton's approach play was neat and tidy, but as always the killer touch was missing were we so desperately need it.

The closest the Blues came to breaking the deadlock was when Killa rattled the cross bar after an excellent delivery from Mikky Arteta. Neat work, but the Blues were missing organisation on the pitch. There was no natural leader there to organise the troops, as Valente, and Yobo were found wandering out of positions from time to time. Stubbsey were are you, come back all is forgiven.

Everton dominated the possessional part of the first half, but that elusive goal, a lead to defend, is all we needed. We know we can defend leads, that is what we built last season's campaign on, but the crowd was getting tetchy.

Half Time 0-0

No quicker had I re-took my seat for the second half, than I find Everton on the back foot conceding a sloppy goal to Wigan's man mountain Damien Francis. What struck me about the goal was the reaction from Skipper Davey Weir. He turned instantly to the linesman on the Bullens Road to give him a bollicking for maybe an offside decision. At least four Wigan passes went on in the Everton box, and Davey did not feel it right to bollock his defensive team mates, to me incredible.

Everton huffed and puffed, and predictably Benty and the Big Man were dispatched into the fray. You put a six foot four marksman on the pitch to get you goals, and take off Kilbane, and Davies, who are his natural suppliers, incredible.

Benty came close, when he failed to get a toe to a cross shot, and he had one disallowed when Tiny was adjudged to have climbed over Francis in the melee in the Park End goal mouth. Wigan held out, we booed at the end, then went on to drown our sorrows in a mammoth ten hour piss up.

Sections of the crowd are calling for the head of Moyesy. They pay there money, and are entitled to their opinion. My take is that serious questions can be asked of our manager. No striker, oh that old chestnut, well the lack of goals is compelling. No plan B, or plan A to be precise. The list is endless, and the team at present look clueless, and our motto 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum', has never felt so distant.

Full Time 0-1

Davies, and Neville Look On As Francis Strikes

My Bluekipper Starman goes to Nuno Valente. Honestly, he has improved, well he had to really, but his distribution was excellent, his one on one tackling is solid, but unfortunately he still needs to get fitter.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: “I thought we did okay in the first half. I thought we were a bit more like ourselves. We came into this game from a situation in the past couple of weeks in which we haven’t done as well as we would have liked. The players went about the game well, we created some chances, possibly had a shout for a penalty kick and I was quite pleased, even though I am not happy that we haven’t gone on and got the goals.

I have had a chance to see it and I think that it’s a goal. I don’t think he does foul the player and therefore I think it’s a goal. But then again, we shouldn’t be relying on decisions from referees to win or draw games. But if that decision had been given, it would have given us the chance to go on and win the game."

Everton captain, Davie Weir says: “The start has come as a bit of a shock to us. We were expecting better. From six games, we’ve only got three points. That’s not good enough. I don’t know the reason. I wish I did know. The players are working as hard as we have always done, which got us results last season, but it’s not happening for us this season. We can’t get ahead in games and we can’t get a goal.

I thought we played pretty well in the first half. We didn’t capitalise on the good start and that encouraged Wigan. They came out in the second half and they got the goal. They were happy with that and we threatened several times in the second half without making it count. The million dollar question is: ‘How do we put this right?’ First of all, we’ll work as hard as we can. We can’t lose our confidence. You saw from the game today that once we conceded, it took us five or ten minutes to get back playing again. I think that now we have experienced the good times, we have to remember that once the bad times come, we need to stick together. We have to come out fighting. The only way we can make things better is by winning games.

We know that we have the support of the fans - that is never in doubt. They are top class. It’s easy to say that and give them platitudes, but they are fantastic and they support you through thick and thin. We want to give them success, because that is what they deserve. They mean a lot to us. Wigan are an honest team, they are straightforward, there is no sort of hidden agenda with them - what you see is what you get. They work hard for one another, they are solid and well-organised and they will do all right this season.”

Everton Team News

Moyesy has got posers. Out injured still is Harry Hill, PK, Biffa, and long termer Pisto. The problems lies with who does he play at left back. Nuno Valente who in all honesty has not be firing on all cylinders, or right footer Matteo Ferrari. Expect however Moyesy to stay with his tried and trusted 4-5-1, with Benty the up front work horse. Tiny should start even if reports suggest he is absolutely knackered. He should get his blow, when some of the walking wounded return.

Davey Weir says: "We are not far away (from good form). We just need a little break in games and we can take it from there. We need to get in front in a few games. I am sure it will come. We have had a difficult time in the last three or four weeks with a lot of tough games that haven't gone on our way. If you get ahead you have got something to defend and we have only been in that position once this season. That is something we are working on and something we realise we have got to do better. But scoring goals is the hardest part of football and there is no secret formula. It is a matter of hard work and taking the chances when they come."

Joey says: "It is a big game for us. We realise the situation we are in. It has been a bad start, we know that but it is good we are playing at home. Hopefully this is the game where we can turn things around and take it from there. We are a good group of lads. We know we are not doing very well right now but the confidence is still there and the belief in our ability is still there. We are looking forward to the game and we are confident. We know we are still a good side. Wigan are doing okay at the moment and they will be confident. But we are playing at home. We know it will be a tough game, we are giving them respect. But if we can fight and play the way we are used to playing at home we will make it very tough for them.

We will give everything because we have to win the game and it is a very important game for us. We know how the Goodison crowd is. There support can be fantastic and they will know we will be giving everything The three points are more important now than playing good football. It might be a scrappy game because they could come here thinking a point will be enough for them. Anything can happen but we want the crowd to keep supporting us and we will be giving everything on the pitch to make sure we win the game." (23/09/05)

About The Opposition

Manager Paul Jewell is expected to make wholesale changes from the side which scraped past Bournemouth in the Carling Cup with Mike Pollitt set to return in goal ahead of fit-again John Filan.

Jimmy Bullard has recovered from a dead leg and should move closer to a new Wigan appearance record at Everton.

Wigan Boss Paul Jewell says: "They (Everton) have to hit form at some time and although I hope their bad run continues this weekend, I expect them to be pushing for a European place come May." (23/09/05)
