Everton's short roller coaster ride in Europe for this season is no more. After the disastrous events of Bucharest a fortnight ago, it left a mountain too high to climb at Goodison last night. You can't fault the players efforts, as they lay siege to the Romanians goal for most of the game, but it just was not to be.

The game was over shadowed at the end by an injury to Mikky Arteta, that had everyone in Goodison holding their breath. The Spaniard seem to take a fit on the pitch, after a shit 'ouse of a challenge from Mihitia Plesan, who took him out for no apparent reason. Mikky was surrounded by players, staff and paramedics for a good five minutes as they carefully took him from the pitch. Thankfully the news this morning is that he was kept in hospital overnight, and seems fine today. The referee also needs to find a mirror and take a good hard look at himself. A very inept game from the French official was topped off by the handing out of only a yellow card to Pleasan, when a straight red seemed more appropriate.

Everton started like a steam train, and an early goal was desperately needed. Chance after chance came, the passion and tackling was fierce, as Everton threw every last bit of effort they had at Bucharest. The foreigners, did what foreigners do best. Went down whenever possible, slowed the game up, feigned injury. It took the Blues till the half hour mark to crack the scoring, when Tiny Tim nodded home after good work from Mikky and Dunc.

The chances still came but the goals did not. Everton had one disallowed, after Dunc was adjudged to have barged into the Bucharest keeper, well there was no doubt about it he did. Nige was called into action at the end of the half, after first leg danger man Bratu broke clear. Goodison held its breath, Nige saved.

One nil at the half, and at last the boys in Blue left to a standing ovation, and we still believed the dream was possible.

H-T 1-0

The chances kept coming, but the goals did not, The Big Man, Mikky with a few free kicks, and Faddy all had chances. The tempo was still high, and all credit to the ball boys who played a fantastic role on the evening, keeping the game going whenever the ball went out of play. Mikky Arteta was orchestrating everything in midfield, in one of his finest displays in a Blue shirt. Joey looked solid at the back, but love them or hate them, credit must be given to the Romanians for their game plan of stifling Everton.

The flowing play of the first half went, as urgency and high balls were the order of the second half. As expected Biffa and Benty were unleashed, but the end result was still the same, frustration.

The boys deserve credit for their admirable performance, and were rightly applauded off at the end. If they can take this tempo, and passion into the rest of the Premiership campaign, they should be ok. It just was not to be though, and we all thought back to the away game in Villarreal, and when it looked like we were through, the bald Italian thought otherwise. It was like a dagger through your heart, and until last night, I truly believe it was playing still on the team's mind.

Lets look forward now, and target one of the Cups, if not a League placing to put us back were we belong, and that is Europe. Thanks for the ride boys, certainly not enjoyable, but bare knuckle excitement all the way.

F-T 1-0

Dunc's Euro Dream Is Over

My bluekipper Starman without doubt goes to Mikky Arteta. His quality oosed through, and it was a magnificent performance. He got a standing ovation leaving the pitch, but unfortunately it was on a stretcher. He will be back, and with performances like his last night, so will Everton.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: The performance was great. The players were down after the 5-1 defeat but they came out tonight and they gave it a real go. We tried to get goals early. It wasn't for the want of getting balls into the box or attempts at goal that we only got the one. We just maybe needed some to drop kinder than they did for us. But we must have had 20 good crosses into the box in the first half.

I am delighted Tim Cahill was on the scoresheet but I want the strikers to get in the goals as well. We can't rely on Tim to be our goalscorer because he is a midfield player. His goals are a massive help to us but we need to get our forwards getting some goals so it can take a bit of pressure off the other lads.

I think nobody could deny the crosses Mikel put in were fantastic. I wanted Phil back in the midfield and I wanted Tim to get into the box to get on the end of some crosses. With Simon being injured I felt Mikel was ideal there. He has done the job before and he did it very well tonight. It is a game we have won. It doesn't help the fact we are out of the Uefa Cup but we didn't concede any goals and we have to take the positives into the Manchester City game.

The experience of Europe was fabulous. I have enjoyed every minute of it other than the second half over in Romania. It is something nobody thought we could achieve last year but we have been there, had a go at it and I am sure we will have more goes at it in the future."

Moyesy on Mikky Arteta : "Mikel is fine. He will stay in hospital overnight for observation because the challenge caused him to have a fit on the pitch. We were concerned it was a neck injury but he has come in, he seems okay and they will keep him in overnight to make sure there are no problems. It wasn't a good challenge. It was very late and I don't think they boy will have thought at any time he could have got near the ball. It was a complete takeout. The challenges have got to be relatively fair and at least close to within the rules of the game and that wasn't."

Tiny says: We know that the performance meant a lot to the fans. It was such a big task to come into the game five-one down. We just had to put everything we had into it. The fans deserved a reaction like that and even though we only won 1-0, I think it's something for us to build on. We had a lot of chances. We got the ball wide to cross in, but it just didn't fall for us. The best thing for us was that we worked really hard together, dug deep and got a good result. Unfortunately it wasn't enough." Off The Ball

* The most cowardly challenge I have seen at Goodison since Jimmy 'shit ouse' Case took out Geoff Nulty yonks ago. Mihitia Plesan took out Mikky Arteta, and put the Spaniard in hospital. Two minutes left on the clock, leading 5-2 on aggregate, and he did what he did. Its off the ball, as the ball was no were to be seen, you big Romanian turd.

* At one time there were two balls on the pitch. The game was going on with Everton pressing. A ball was thrown from the crowd and onto the pitch. Everyone was shouting to get the ball off. Knowing our luck, we'd score and Al Murray would disallow it. Then a steward ran on the pitch and grabbed the ball. Run off and waved to the crowd, who were cheering him.

* On a lighter note. Five minutes left, and the Street End singing, 'were going to win 4-0'. Quality stuff from a quality crowd. (30/09/05)

Everton Team News

More selection posers for Moyesy with the news that Simon Davies is rated doubtful for this crunch UEFA Cup game. If the Welshman does not make it, I would expect, Hibbo to come back in at right back, Tom Cruise to move back into the middle, and Jimmy Mac dropping out wide to fire the bullets for the Big Man. Although our first half performance was good against Wigan, Moyesy knows he needs a barrel load of goals tonight, so in my opinion he has no option but to start Dunc up front, and create the Alamo at Goodison.

If the reports are correct, expect to see Biffa at some stage, as Moyesy is indicating, that the striker will start from the bench. Hopefully he won't be needed as Dunc bags a hat trick in a convincing 6-0 win. Well you can dream. Long term absentee's will be still watching from the stands. There is a nice collection up there now, in the shape of PK, Harry Hill, Vaughny, Andy Pandy and Pisto.

We have waited ten years to get back into Europe, so let's at least give it a go, and put that horror show in Bucharest behind us. Get out and support the boys, get behind them, so we can tell the club at least we have done our bit by turning out to cheer them on. If Everton were to achieve the impossible, they would be only the fifth club in Europe's 49yr old history to over turn such a deficit, so come on you Blues !!!

Moyesy says: Our task is certainly not impossible but we need to make sure that the game doesn’t get slowed down too often, which has every chance of happening. I’ve got to be careful of that. We don’t want the game broken up every two minutes for players going down injured so I will be looking carefully for that.

We have given ourselves a bigger task than we had hoped but if they can do it to us then I hope we can do it to them. Goals change games and although we made mistakes in Bucharest, their finishing was clinical. I had watched them play and I knew that they would be a threat and maybe at half-time we were a bit surprised just how comfortable we were. The players are all determined to get something from the game. I can sense it and I can see it in them. The way they are training and the way they are reacting shows me although whether or not it will enough we shall have to wait and see.

But I am just beginning to signs that there are one or two of them starting to brighten up. There’s a sparkle coming back so lets hope we see that on Thursday. It’s a situation where we are under-dogs and we know that if we do turn things around it will be a terrific night. It’s a big task but not impossible." (29/09/05)

About The Opposition

The Romanians will be cock a hoop with their first leg bashing of the Blues, and last weekend recorded another five goals against City rivals Rapid. Dinamo sit second in the Romanian League, a point behind Steau, having scored 22 goals in seven matches, and conceding only six. The good news is that they are not the best of travellers. The last round seen them dip away at the mighty Omonia Nicosia 2-1, before edging through 4-3 on aggregate.

Everton European Legend Graeme Sharp believes their danger man is diminutive midfielder Stefan Grigorie. Striker Claudia Niculescu, is not expected to start, but hey that means jack shit to me.

Sharpy says: " The faces will be familiar, I doubt their approach will be the same. They come to Goodison with a four goal lead to protect. But they also arrive with a reputation for not travelling well. They will be keen to guard against conceding early in the game and so I expect them to be very defensive in an attempt to shut up shop. They will get everybody behind the ball and there will not be a great deal of scope for the attacking play they showed in the first leg. It is an uphill struggle for us but there is definitely a chance to redeem the tie and book a place in the next round.

They will be confident with a 5-1 advantage but if we get a couple of goals on the board I think you will see the nerves setting in. If we get after them and don't give them time to settle and become accustomed to the surroundings then we have a chance. Obviously it is so important for us not to concede another goal, particularly in the early stages. But I expect to see all the traffic in those early stages heading towards the Bucharest goal. And hopefully Grigorie will remain a spectator for the evening." (29/09/05)
