EVERTON

Goalscorers: Stirling (og) 23m Cahill 86m  Att: 10,756

Everton: Wright, Neville, Lescott, Hughes, Valente, Van der Meyde, Davies, Carsley, Naysmith, Beattie, Anichebe

Bench: Turner, Hibbert, Cahill for Van der Medye (62m), Arteta for Naysmith (62m), Johnson

Referee: Mr. Ian Williamson

Moyesy as expected shuffled the troops around, to give a game to some of his squad who have been rattling around on the bench all season. It was great to see Nuno back in his left back position, as he pushed Nace further up the park. A trimmer Andy Van was also on show, but the delight for me was to see Big Vic and Yosser Hughes given their chance, as these are two lads who are rated highly by the boss.

The Blues started brightly, their passing crisp and sharp, and the movement was good. Peterboro' like most lower league sides in the Cup, went at Everton but with no great substance. Scary moments early on came in the shape of Dickie running out to the half way line to take a cross, but missing it by a good distance. Thankfully Roger was sat on the line to clear up the mess, and in the end no harm was done. Everton took the lead through a quick bit of thinking by Andy Van, a superb cross in by Phil Neville and a fortuitous deflection from Biffa's header. One up and nothing more than we deserved.

Yosser on his first team debut was lucky not to concede a penalty moments later, when he upended a Posh forward in the box, but in fairness to the lad this was his only near disaster on the night, as he won everything in the air, and looked composed on the deck. Up front the other youngster was running the show. Everything went through Big Vic, who looked solid, strong and at times extremely skilful. You would have needed a JCB to move him of the ball, or some other heavy weight related object, crane, lorry, you get the picture.

Everton's dominance should have been doubled when Harry Hill brought a superb stop out of the keeper, after fantastic work out wide by who else, but Big Vic. One up half time, and the way the game had panned out nothing really to worry about.

Half Time: Peterboro 0 EVERTON 1

The half time chit chat got to Posh, and they came at the Blues. This was their Cup Final, all that tosh, but admittedly it was a different side faced the Blues. They wanted it, and they had us on the back foot. Another Posh attack brought as corner when Yosser superbly cleared over his own bar after a rasping shot. From the ensuing corner, the Blues defence where like statues as Benjamin's free header just went over the line, despite Simple's efforts to clear. Their crowd roared, we thought shit here we go again. Visions of Port Vale, Stockport, Bristol City, and all the other lower league clubs who have dumped us out before, this though would be the worst of the lot.

In Moyesy's defence though he had his trump cards yet to play, with AJ, Tiny and Mikky all on the bench. On the hour mark the ineffectual Andy Van along with Nace made way for Mikky and Tiny, as the game was ebbed and flowed from end to end in great English Cup tradition.

Both sides had chances, but cruelly for Posh, and I think deservedly for us Tiny slotted in the winner with minutes left on the clock after good work from Big Vic. Job done, though at times Peterboro made it hard. In the hat, and easier opposition should lie ahead as the shite come in at the next stage. No doubt who my bluekipper starman man is, Big Victor Anichebe, I think you all know why. Outstanding, and definitely one for the future, no sod it one for now. He may make Biffa pull his socks up anyway.

Fans Match Report By Andy Fletcher

I took my place early in the Moyes end of the London Rd ground and watched Ian Turner warm up with Woodsy, Dicky must have been doing his hair or something as he came out later. On the whole I thought Peterborough did well in closing us down, we never really looked threatened at the back apart from the goal and a few corners. Richard Wright wasnt good enough and i dont think he's big enough either. Just doesnt look confident.

I was suprised to see Shandy being subbed as I thought he was having a decent enough game. Davies looked more threatening once Cahill and Arteta had come on. Joleon looked decent and didnt really put a foot wrong and Mark Hughes showed he will get better, wether he will make it I dont know, same for Victor, he's a handfull for defenders at this level but I dont think hes got the edge, hes quick and strong but doesnt seem to be able to turn that into more finishes.

Biggest highlight for me was Andy Johnson warming up at half time, he didnt miss one shot past Turner and his finishing is awesome.

Wright 6
Hughes 7
Lescott 8
Naysmith 6
Valente 6
Van Der Meyde 7

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: “I thought we were always comfortable even after we lost the goal. I always thought we had time to get another one. We had a grip on the game even though we didn’t start the second half very well and we allowed Peterborough to get some momentum. All credit to them but we were always likely to get a goal. To be honest, I wouldn’t have minded extra-time.

It can be good for the players and it helps their fitness. We had a few out there who haven’t had too many games so extra-time wouldn’t have bothered me. I enjoyed some of the stuff we played and others were not so good. I’m happy we are through. That was the aim and that’s what we’ve done.” (19/09/06)

What The Fans Thought

What did you think of the match?  Did Moyesy get his team selection and tactics right?  e-mail info@bluekipper.com after the game.

* One question. Why is Richard Wright still at the club when we have 3 quality young goalkeepers??? I can't remember the last time I saw Wright play a first team game which did'nt include a string of school boy errors. AJ & Vic.......the futures bright, the futures blue!!! Cheers lads! (James)

* Over all a good win against a very over phisical not so posh team , what we have got is a youngster up front that is going to be a top class premeire player in BIG VICTOR, five or six changes from the Wigan game shows we have more of a squad this sesaon, and if we can get Vaugan fit we will have great competion up front, the midfield is more mobile and skilful, I would like to see Turner and Reddy fighting for the No 2 golie slot, and get some decent money for Wright. Would like to see Nugent arrive in January and get good money for Beattie, and the mid-field [red head lad] from Reading as cover and then come in as the season goes on, as i think Carsley will find it hard to keep up the pace he has started this season. (RHarrycharles)

* Someone take dickie off our hands, I can only imagine that he was waving to his mum as sky was there! Lescott and the youngster Hughes both look like good additions to the squad and as for Victor, awesome! (Douglas Stother)

* Sat there before kick off didn’t hear the teams being read out and saw Ian Turner warming up with Chris Woods. I thought safe enough pair of hands in goal then along strolls Dickie when the teams come out. Let’s just give him to somebody in the January transfer window, he was a shambles he installs absolutely no confidence in the defence. Nuf said! Victor should be ahead of BT in the pecking order after yet another lacklustre display. AVM needs to loose another two stone if he is going to be able to run faster than a sloth. Simple is like a headless chicken plenty of running but no head. Other than that well done Master Hughes, Come on you BLUES! (Brendan Fox)

* Very impressive display by Vic - he held the ball up really well – he could be a perfect partner for AJ. Hughes also looked good in defence and suddenly things look promising for the future of EFC! (Liam)

Off The Ball

* Someone in the Toffee Shop forgot to use the spell checker. Andy Van has not been out of the side that long surely to forget his name. His shirt had him as Van Der Medye, boring but true !!

Everton Team News

Expect wholesale changes as Moyesy will rest some of the boys who have performed admirably for us this season. Sure to come in will be Posh old boy Simon Davies, as Harry Hill is a definite non starter. Dickie Wright, Davey Weir, Nuno and Andy Van all should get the nod as Moyesy uses his squad to the full.

Simple says: "I am disappointed not to have been involved but it is all about how the club is doing. We have had a great start to the season and the lads are performing really well. Everyone in he squad is ready to play and the manager has the chance to rotate the squad and keep everybody fresh."

Its been a long time since the Blues last appeared in the Final of the League Cup, 1984 to be exact. Winger in the drawn Final against the shite that day was none other than Everton Coach Alan Irvine, and he for one is treating this season's competition as serious as he did 22 years ago.

Alan says: "The League Cup was the springboard for success at this club in the 80s and I don't see any reason why it can't be a springboard for us now as well.

The Carling Cup is something maybe some teams don't treat with the right respect at the beginning of the competition. But rest assured by the time you reach the quarter-finals everybody wants to play in it and everybody wants to win."We hope we are going to get to those rounds and we are taking this competition very seriously." Lavo's Bet: Tough one this. My run on AJ will surely come to an end with this game, but only for the fact that Moyesy will probably give him a blow. Biffa's my boy then, as I expect the out of form striker to start, so nail him for first goal, at a tasty 5/1. (19/09/06)
About The Opposition

Bluekipper's mate midfielder Paul Carden returns from suspension, as does Guy Branston. Lloyd Opara is out with a hamstring strain, Ben Futcher is sidelined by a knee injury and Simon Yeo is a long-term absentee.

The Posh beat Swindon at the weekend on their travels, after getting tanked 5-0 in the week at Walsall. The London Road outfit find themselves mid table after nine games in the bottom division, but as we know anything can happen in the Cup. (19/09/06)

Paul Carden Gets The Better Of Ryan Giggs

Bluekipper have a bit more interest than usual about this game. A good mate of ours plays for Peterborough. Even though he supports the dark side (everyone's got one!) we invited him to have a chat about the game on Tuesday.

Cardy has missed the start of the season due to a double hernia operation. He made his first start of the season against Walsall and got beat 5-0. If that wasn’t bad enough he got sent off in the 87th minute. So he has a shitty time of it.

Anyway we had a chat and a cup of tea.

What did you think when you heard about the draw?

PC We were playing Notts County away - on the coach the press officer had a list of teams we could get in the draw. I said Everton at Goodison will be a good one. We got into the ground and the refs room had the tv on with draw. I asked the ref who did we get. He said are you a red or blue? I couldn’t believe that we got Everton at home. Everyone was buzzin. I was made up.

Do you think The Posh will do better than the team you support? Are you going to put up a bit more of a fight?

PC Look I have had a miserable week, the reds got beat 3 – 0. I got my first start against Walsall, lost 5-0 and got sent off. Now I will miss the Swindon game. It’s been the worse week in my career. I just hope I get a chance to play against Everton and I am looking to cause upset.

If you do play you will come up against some lads on top form at the moment. The likes of Mikel, Tim, Phil Neville and Lee Carsley.

PC Yeh I hope I get the chance to play. All the women keep saying Arteta is lovely, but anyone will look good next to Phil Neville and Lee Carsley ! Seriously though, they are top draw players, they are in the Premiership year in year out, you don’t stay at that level if you’re not good enough. Phil Neville has played with Utd for years and must have 50 odd caps. Tim Cahill has scored in the World Cup Final. It would be great if I get the chance to play against them. To be honest, I really hope I play, I am really looking forward to it. I am just going to do my best and hope it pays off.

Have The Posh got any players that will cause The Toffeemen any trouble?

PC Yes we've got two good young lads who on their day can cause some trouble. Danny Crow has played for Norwich in the Premiership. He always tells us when he megged Gerard when Norwich played Liverpool. We have also got an up and coming left winger in Jamie Day. We have scouts looking at him all the time. He could give Tony Hibbert a hard time.

Do you think there will be a big crowd?

PC I think it’s a sell out. The ground holds 15,500. We played Man Utd last season and it was a sell out. There is a really good atmosphere – it is an old type ground and close to the pitch. Hopefully we will use it to our advantage.

What about family and friends?

PC I have had to order 10 tickets and arrange a box for a fanatical fan – the box holds 12. I get 2 complimentary tickets so that’s 24. Mind you, that’s not including all my Everton mates who have their own tickets. All my family are going.

Have you had any stick from your blue mates?

PC My Blue mates have threatened to lock me up and kidnap me if I hurt any of their players! But they are looking forward to seeing their mate playing. I am really looking forward to it too.

Are there any other scousers in the team?

PC No I am the only one. So this game is really special to me. Richard Butcher is not a scouser, but he is an Evertonian. He is happy about the tie. All the lads are made up when we get drawn with a premiership team. It should be a really good night and with any luck, we will put Everton’s good start to a stop!

What would be your ideal result?

PC I would like a 0-0 draw at home and then go back to Goodison and win 1-0 and for me to score my first Peterborough goal, but now we are talking soft!

What do you think of Everton’s start?

PC You can’t knock it, Moyes has bought well with younger lads too. Johnson, Lescott, Tim Howard, but all have played enough football to be well experienced. You have a steady squad. In those respects they are serious contenders for the European places.

You lot got off to a great start and its all gone pear shaped. What happened?

PC Got off to a good start winning 3 of our first 4 games. We beat Bristol Rovers, Boston and Macclesfield, then we beat Ipswich on pens in the Carling Cup. A good draw against Notts County but since then haven’t won a game. To say things have ‘turned’ is an understatement.

New manager Keith Alexander – What can you tell us about him?

PC Yes, he’s good, but I missed all the pre season with my hernia operation so it’s frustrating that I couldn’t make an impression. But since I have been back in training he has been positive and encouraging. He doesn’t have a go at you for no reason, but he will if it’s a lack of effort. He had a go at us last Saturday and last night. I think he was more speechless after last night with the poor show. I have never been beaten 5-0 before and don’t know that many people who have, at least not more than once! I was really disappointed last night, especially with being sent off, which I don’t feel I deserved.

You are playing Swindon on Saturday and they have a few stars, Dennis Wise, Gus Puyet and Paul Ince. How do you feel at missing the game?

PC I am disappointed; I would have liked to get stuck in with Paul Ince.(At this time, Jogger shows Paul a picture of Joe Parkinson putting Paul Ince on his arse!. Cardy was laughing his head off.)

How are the crowd at Peterborough with you?

PC Peterborough are averaging 4,500 people in the crowd and they are really good with me. I won the supporters player of the year last season so I hope they like what I do for the team.

Now Cardy, what was Big Ron Manager all about? And the fight with Mark Arbour?

PC My mates have said it makes good TV. The fight was just one of those things – he’s a good footballer and a good centre half - I was disappointed with the result and thought he wasn’t doing his job properly (but he probably thought the same thing about me)! I lost my head which is so easy to do after a game like that and in the heat of moment I lashed out at him.

What was it like with the cameras following you around all the time?

PC It was really strange at first, but you get used to them. You get to know the cameramen and after a while you just don’t notice they are there.

You seem to have made an impression – maybe a future in soaps when you retire?!

PC [Laughs out loud] I don’t think so! (Bluekipper’s secretary thinks he has got what it takes though!!!)

What about Ron Atkinson? What was he like to work with?

PC He was giving out advice, some of it was taken on board, and some of it wasn’t.

How did Steve Bleasdale feel about it?

PC Ron was trying to help Steve out but Steve was a little wary of him at first; obviously with Ron being a manager before he lost his way a little with racist remarks. Steve felt Ron was trying to get his way back into the game and maybe take the job that Steve was after, so Steve felt a little threatened by Ron initially.

Good Luck Paul, fingers crossed, if all goes well, you will be playing against the Toffeemen and I hope you get beat 6 -1 and you score their goal. Any last thought?

PC Yeah, a few of my blue mates want to go out after the game, regardless of the result – I have told them there is no way I am going out as it’s gay night in Peterborough on a Saturday night so I have told them I am staying in – they can go out on their own!!
