Referee:

Moyesy decided to see this game, when goals from Jimmy Mac, and Killa settled affairs. It took the Blues till the second half to break down a stubborn Port Vale side, with the weather playing a big part, in pacing the game at times at snails speed.

Moyes was forced to split his squad in two, but he was happy with the days events, with two wins, five goals scored, and one conceded.

Moyesy says: I am pleased with the workout. The objective today was to play as many of the first team boys for 90 minutes. We were able to do that and it has been a good continuation of our pre-season work and the games were good for us.

It took us a wee while to get the goal and maybe we should have been a bit more hungry in the first half. I thought we had opportunities that we passed up but nevertheless I thought we did well.

We said at half time let’s go and get the goals and then we can keep the ball better in the hope we could try and see the game out because it was so warm. So not getting the goals kept us on edge but I have to say once we got the first goal we were more than likely there." (16/07/06)

Team To Play Bury

About The Opposition

Ex-Everton reserve George Pilkington (pictured below) will be playing for Port Vale. The defender spent 8 years at Everton, but never made the first team.

George Pilkington

Georgie says: "It's always nice to prove a point to an old club, so I'd love to put in a great performance. I know Everton wouldn't be too fussed, though. It would make no difference to them, but it would be personally satisfying. You always hope you can make the breakthrough, but in the last year I was there I could read between the lines. There were a lot of players ahead of me, so in that final season I knew deep down that I was going to have to move on.

If they don't think you are good enough then you have to get on with it, that is the harsh reality. The way I was told was quite informal really. I went up to David Moyes after a training session and asked him where my future lay. In a round-about way he said they would be releasing me. I half knew it was coming, but I was still devastated. I loved the club, I still do." (14/07/06)
