EVERTON

    Goalscorers: Cahill     Att: 22,015

Everton: Howard, Neville, Yobo, Stubbs, Naysmith, Osman, Carsley, Arteta, Kilbane, Beattie, Johnson.

Bench: Wright, Cahill for Kilbane (62m), McFadden for Beattie (62m), Lescott for Stubbs (47m), Davies.

Referee: Uriah Heep, Sorry Rennie.

Fans were asking each other inside the ground if Tim Cahill was injured, as Moyesy surprised us by putting him on the bench. Killa and Ossie made their first appearances of the season. Simple sat next to Tim on the bench. Nace replaced the injured Valente. Vic was the unlucky one to miss out altogether.

With both teams playing 2 wide men the game was open from the start, Leon Osman was first into his stride with a jinking run. Killa had a shot but just missed the corner flag. Bentley for Blackburn was busy and McCarthy and Roberts used their speed to get away from Stubbs and Yobo and get shots in. One went wide. One was saved well by Howard.

Everton had plenty of possession but the last ball wasn't good enough for the willing Johnson. When it did find Beattie he could have held it up and brought the midfield into the game, but he twice lost the ball, when he tried to turn a defender.

Yobo and Stubbs both made great tackles on Roberts and McCarthy. Yobo made a goal saving clearance late on in the half. Everton's best hopes came from Ossie who looked the part.

Half Time Blackburn 0 EVERTON 0

Everton were stunned when McCarthy opened the scoring for Blackburn with a right footed shot. Everton came back and were pushed on by Osman and Arteta, who moved to the left with the introduction of Cahill.

Everton continued to press with fantastic backing from the Everton fans. Andy Johnson should have scored but hit his shot at the ex redshite's legs. Everton had plenty of chances now. Arteta had a golden opportunity but shot wide.

The Everton fans thought that Johno was brought down by Todd for a penalty, but Rennie said no. When you thought it's not going to be our night, Everton pounced when Faddy went through past Friedel, but his shot hit the post, Johno tried to force it home, but it broke to Tim Cahill who put it home. Cue Cahill punching the corner flag and Everton fans going bonkers.

Everton went for the win, but were pushed back by Blackburn when McCarthy hit a shot, but again the commanding Howard saved well. Everton nearly won it at the death, when Faddy went on a great run, but was brought down on the edge of the area. Chants from the fans for Arteta to take the free kick, when Faddy seen the headlines in the papers tomorrow said: 'maker taker.' and hit it 5 yards over the bar.

My arse was twitching every time Naysmith had the ball. He was diabolical. Moyesy please don't play him at Spurs against Lennon. Everton had a few contenders for man of the match. Tim Howard looks very competent. Yobo did well. Johno again looked a handful. Subs Cahill and McFadden both made an impact when they come, but Leon Osman was my Blue Kipper Star Man.

Fans Match Report By Howell Davies

It's early in the season and the blues have started really well so far. I say this on the basis that we've got 4 points without playing particularly well and - more importantly - we managed to get something out of a match where the opposition scored first (something that was very rare last season).

First - the Welsh perspective though. As an Everton and Wales fan I am always interested in seeing other Welsh players and hoping that they do well. Fortunately for me Robbie Savage has retired from international football - allowing me to hate him with a passion in the same way that almost everyone else does. As for Simon Davies, I thought the half time interval summed up how he performs for Everton - knocking up with Tim Cahill showed a considerable amount of classy ability ... but when they are actually playing the situation is so often different.

We always seem to lose the toss at Blackburn so the match had us defending at the away fans end in the first half - which I think has been the same over the past 3 seasons. And as in the last few seasons, Blackburn start really well and put the defence under some serious pressure - this time Tim Howard kept things scoreless by saving really well from Roberts when most people expected him to score. Everton's main route out of defence seemed to be through Naysmith doing what he does best - overhitting the ball or slicing it into touch. So not much progress there! Blackburn's tactic of playing both strikers down the middle looked an excellent one to me - particularly as neither full back provided sweeper-style cover and I did wonder at times whether we would be better off playing with 3 central defenders by bringing Lescott on as well.

In attack Johnson looked lively as he had done on Saturday while Beattie looked rather sluggish - but both suffered from a lack of service, although Osman was playing pretty well and does look to have come on a bit since last season. Arteta found the going a lot tougher in the middle where space was at a premium - and not helped by Savage kicking the shit out of him on more than one occasion. I just wonder if anyone else thinks that Savage is Uriah Rennie's love child as how he managed to walk off without a yellow card is a complete mystery to me.

Half time 0 - 0 was a pretty good result for us I thought...

Second half saw Stubbs depart early after failing to reover from an unpleasant first half tackle from Bentley. Bentley received a yellow card, thus ensuring the consistency in handing out cards that sees players only getting red cards for doing relatively fuck all whilst giving Bentley the freedom to maim 4 further fellow pros before being unavailable for a single match.

Blackburn's goal was at the other end so we couldn't really see it.

Only after the goal - and the substitutions (Cahill and McFadden on for Beattie and Kilbane) did Everton really start playing with some conviction. How Johnson didn't get a penalty is totally beyond me. I can only assume that Rennie thought it was Savage making the challenge.

The goal showed some of the spirit that McFadden is starting to show. He does look more confident with the ball and - similar to Osman - seems to have come on a fair amount since last season. He showed some decent strength in bursting through the defence, was clearly fouled by Friedel and was unlucky not to score. Cahill saved Rennie the trouble of having to survive the wrath of Evertonians on and off the field - would he have awarded a penalty (surely even he couldn't have mixed up Friedel and Savage).

One more excellent run by McFadden set up a late free kick which Arteta didn't take (enough said).

Overall I felt it was a fair result. Blackburn looked a lot more competent than Watford and could easily have gone ahead earlier. Everton showed some real fighting spirit though and that bodes wel for the future.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: “When it is 1-0 and the clock is running down you worry that you won’t get anything but we kept going and we thoroughly deserved the goal. A decision went for us against Watford on Saturday and I thought a couple didn’t go for us tonight. But we had people on the bench tonight who we thought could change the game and we’ve not always had that in the last season or so. We knew that we had James McFadden and Tim Cahill who could come on and create or score a goal. When you’ve got that it makes a difference. I think James has had a good level of performance in his two games.”

Sausage says: "Naysmith. He's not worth a balloon."

Moyesy on the Penalty that never was: “It was a penalty — definitely. I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t given. Andy got round Todd, who never looked at the ball. He was only intent on getting Johnson, who had to run wide to get round him and was pushed in the back. I would certainly have expected the linesman to see it.”

What The Fans Thought

What did you think of the match?  Did Moyesy get his team selection and tactics right?  e-mail info@bluekipper.com after the game.

* I honestly think everton should publicly slate the ref from last night he was and always has been awful , so anti everton it is unbelievable. (Steve Hughes)

* I have seen both games this season and I feel that we lack quality in midfield.Im sorry to say this but Lee Carsley has not got a forward pass in him,he is slow and is not good enough for the prem. Killbane was a joke last night along with Naysmith. We cannot afford to carry four players of such poor quality. If Mr Moyes does not sign at least one midfield player it could be a long season. I wouldn’t want to put to much pressure on a young lad like Boyle but from what I saw preseason he wouldn’t let us down,in any other team young players a given a chance (ie Man Ure). (Dave C)

* Play like shite, lull Blackburn into a false sense of superiority then bring Cahill on to win the game. If it wasn't for a dodgy Ref it would have worked. Moyes is an absolute bloody genius. (Truebluebeliever)

* Pissed off for 65 minutes watching absolute shite football from Everton! Then delighted for the last 20-25 minutes watching some great stuff from the lads! Obvious question! Why cant we play like that from the start???? The tactics of the big hoof for Beattie has got to stop, we have to play on the floor to feed AJ properly. Not Beattie's fault that he is looking like a shite player, the tactics are shit! When did we last see an Everton player hit the bi-line and put in a decent cross? Faddy looked on fire, must play on saturday! His link up play with AJ was brilliant and caused all sorts of problems when he came on! Keep it on the deck on saturday and we will get a result, play it in the air and we will get fuck all!!!! (ERIC PARK END)

* Moyesey messed up, big time. This was a winnable game and he picked the worst left side in the premiership. Naysmith and Kilbane. I felt deflated before the game and the first half echoed my doubts. Once the subs came on we were much better and deservedly equalised. 2pts lost in my opinion and Moyesey must take the blame. Nayce and Killer are just not up to it anymore. (Steve Markovic)

Off The Ball

* A copper was taking photos of the Everton end. No doubt for his album at home. So the fans obliged with everyone waving at him.

* 'There's only one greedy bastard' & 'Judas' aimed at Jug Ears when he came on as a late sub.

*
A hard one. I'll be happy with a point 1-1. Beattie to score. (Ray)

Everton Team News

Moyesy's major injury doubt is Nuno Valente who hobbled out of the Watford match five minutes into the second period with a dead leg. The Boss is making noises that he may change things around after only one match, and Faddy may be the player to benefit, but me thinks if Nuno passes his late fitness test, he will keep the same eleven, otherwise Roger will step in to the Portuguese defenders boots at left back.

Everton seem to have the upper hand of Blackburn of late, doing the double over them last season, and recording a boring 0-0 the season before. This is one of the oldest fixtures in the history of English footy, and if the Blues win tonight they will edge ahead 55 to 54, with 28 drawn, statto or what hey. The Blues will have 8,000+ fans hopefully following them to Ewood tonight, as this has become Everton's second ground of late, with some fantastic away following, so get there early.

Moyesy says: "Tomorrow's selection is not cast in stone at all. We have three tough games this week and I will be looking to use as much of the squad as is necessary. James McFadden has been excellent pre-season, Joleon Lescott's chomping at the bit and we are still searching for the right balance in midfield. I have 15 or 16 players who are right to play at the moment and I'll be looking to use them all.

Faddy has done very well pre-season," he reiterated. "He has probably come the closest to starting at the weekend, but in the end I decided to go with James Beattie and Andy Johnson. But that won't always be the case. I don't think we got a proper grip of the game in midfield either, and we have options there as well." (22/08/06)

Stubbsey says: "They had a disappointing result at Portsmouth and we have to be ready for a backlash. We will have to make sure we start well, take the game to them and build on Saturday. Mark (Hughes) has done a great job and quietly got on with it . Their midfield is strong and they have added up front at the back so Saturday was a surprise. We have to make sure we are ready for the backlash.

Saturday wasn't the performance we would have liked but when you consider we haven't won on the opening day for 10 years it is a good start. It would be good to carry on after Saturday and then take a good result to Tottenham." (22/08/06)

Blackburn come off a 3-0 thumping down at Fratton Park, and they have to go back to 1996 till they last lost their two openeing fixtures.
