I will try and keep it short and sweet, as if you sat through that yesterday, you certainly don't want a blow by blow re run. Boro got what they came for, a point. They set their stall out to throw eleven men behind the ball and frustrate Everton at every point of the game. Last season's UEFA Cup Finalists find themselves at the wrong end of the table, so in fairness they did what they had to do, but the Boxing Day fare on offer was awful. On Saturday at Reading our match winners were plentiful. Leon, Mikky, AJ all had storming games, yesterday however the same trio were poor to put it mildly.

There was a sense of what might have been at the final whistle, dejection again, but look at it this way. We would have took the draw at Reading, and three points at home to Boro, so it just would have made last night's post match lager session a bit more uplifting, instead of the the the inquest we endured. It was just one of those games, when a piece of individual brilliance would have settled it. We came closest, when Roger broke from the back leaving the Boro front line in his wake. He fed Jimmy Mac in the middle, who in turn fed Big Vic. Inexperience, naivety call it what you like, but the forward decided to shoot, when Mikky was the better option to his right. The ball went tamely wide. AJ was unlucky not to get a penalty when he was tugged back as he raced into the box. Surely one day a referee will be brave enough to give a penalty to the hirsute striker, and not have messrs Mourinho and Wenger's mealy mouthed words ringing in their ears.

After and hour and a half of footy, that was basically that. Both keepers were under worked, as the game was mostly played out in the middle of the park. I had to chuckle at some of the post match phone in's as a section of the Goodison faithful were calling for Moyesy's head. We sit eighth, admittedly we could be higher up the League, but the way I see it is that we have a much better side now, than when Walter departed nearly five years ago. I would not swap Mikky, AJ, Roger, Tiny Tim for the dark days at the turn of the last decade, and I believe that there is better things to come for this Everton side, even if yesterdays game was tiresome.

My bluekipper starman goes to Roger, whose class just shone through on this piss poor Boxing Day offering.

Frustrating Day

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: We had enough of the ball but maybe didn't work their keeper hard enough. I felt our performance just about merited the points, so we are a bit disappointed, but I thought we played well enough. I think we have played better over the season than our points total suggests. I felt Andy Johnson was tugged and it was a penalty early on, but we just don't expect to get them now."

Mikky says: "We wanted to get the three points and I think we did enough. They didn't create anything during the 90 minutes and we were the team looking to score all the time and controlling the game. We had one or two penalty claims as well we should have had as well as some chances. The one with Andy is really clear - you can see clearly the defender is holding his shirt and it should have been a penalty and maybe a red card. AJ looks like he is going to take it and score but he is pulled back. It is going to be the same thing again where people are trying to say AJ is trying to win a penalty but it was an obvious one for me. It should have been a penalty and that would have changed the game." (26/12/06)

* I'd just like to congradulate Simple (Simon Davies) on a great game at right back, he's come into a little bit of form (about time). Well in Simple lad, keep it us me old mucker. Big Dave, Bootle

Off The Ball

* Julio Arca pissing himself laughing after he messed up the funniest free kick seen in years.

* The two poorly inflatable Chang Elephants behind the Park End, what was that all about.

Everton Team News

I fully expect Moyesy to stick with the same eleven that performed superbly at Reading on Saturday. Stubbsey looks like still being sidelined with the knee injury that handed Nace his first start in a while. Nuno is still not 100%, so me thinks the Scots left back will get the nod again. Jimmy Mac has done enough to keep his place even with Big Vic returning to the squad. The only addition to the squad will be Yozzer Hughes, as a precaution to Stubbsey knee troubles.

Everton and Boxing Day wins are a bit thin on the ground, with only 2004's success against Man City our only win in the last six odd seasons. In saying that the Blues have recorded 4 wins and two draws against Boro in the last six seasons, so obviously its team we like to play at Our Grand Old Stadium. Boro sneaked a 2-1 against us back in early October, and hopefully its payback time for the game that gave us our first defeat of the season.

Joey on Boro Challenge says: "I was disappointed we lost the game at The Riverside but I know Yakubu well and I don't think he really fancies playing against me. We are going to see that again on Boxing Day because it is going to be tough, we are both strong and quick. As friends we want to have something we can talk about when we go back home - and getting the three points would be very important.

These are games we need to win. You can see that from our three games already against Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Manchester City because we played really well and deserved to win the three games but let things slip. With two of those return matches at home that is vital because things can change quickly at Christmas. We need to take advantage of the home games and go to Manchester City confident knowing we can win that. Since the early part of the season we have not got back-to-back wins and when you do that you can take a lot of confidence." (25/12/06)

Get Your Shirt On...
Lavo's Bet: Ossie came close, and could have had a hat trick at Reading on Saturday. The midfielder was electric at the weekend and I predict he will carry on his good work of late. Odds of 3/1 for Ossie to score at any time in the match are to good to miss, that's were my 10p is going anyway.
About The Opposition

Boro like the Blues started off the Christmas period with a win, turning over hapless Charlton 2-0 at the Riverside. No doubt the retuning Abel Xavier will get a hero's welcome on his return to Goodison (not). Robert Huth is still out, and like the Blues expect Gareth Southgate to name an unchanged side.

Boro from: Schwarzer, Jones, Parnaby, Taylor, Xavier, Woodgate, Pogatetz, Davies, Wheater, Boateng, Cattermole, Morrison, Downing, Arca, Johnson, Rochemback, Mendieta, Viduka, Yakubu, Christie.

Last Season: Everton 1 Boro 0
