Seven points out of nine prior to yesterday's outing at City, not a bad return over Christmas. No doubt legs were getting tired, as Moyesy used our wafer thin squad to try and freshen things up. It seems even after his brace against Newcastle, Big Vic's days were numbered for a City start after Moyesy accused the forward of not working hard enough against the Geordies. Answer to that problem, is bring Biffa in. Admittedly the striker does run his knob off when it suits, but his goalscoring confidence is at an all time low. Surprisingly Andy van was replaced by Simple, as Moyesy tactics changed from one off all out attack on Saturday, to maybe a smash and grab raid at City. Whatever his thoughts it did not work.

The game was poor with chances few and far between. As is the norm now AJ had half a shout for a penalty when he was pushed from behind in the area whilst chasing the ball. The forward who has gained a very unfair reputation now me thinks is even scared to claim for the spot kick, maybe with half a mind on the furore that may follow. Everton's best chance came when Joey headed wide from close range. Tim Howard and Nicky Weaver could have had a New Years Day lie in, as both keepers only problem in the first period was to keep warm.

Two crucial substitutes at half time, in the form of Nace for Nuno (still in the dark on that one), but more importantly for the outcome of the game, was the introduction of Samaras. It took the Greek striker five minutes of the re start to put City one up. Phil Neville lost the tall striker in the build up, and allowed him to venture into the six yard box unmarked. A near post drive was met on the volley by Samaras, one nil to City.

Moyesy reacted by bringing on Victor for Biffa, but all our work was undone by a moment of madness by normally Mr. Reliable Tim Howard. With the ball going wide of the area, the American keeper ran out of his goal, and upended Vassell, when the forward was going nowhere. Penalty, no doubt there, but the keeper escaped with a yellow, probably right from the ref, as the striker was going nowhere. Samaras dispatched a coolly taken penalty, two nil City.

Fifteen left on the clock, and it sparked Everton into action. Ossie pulled one back, as Everton enjoyed their best spell of the game. The midfielder fired in from ten yards out after good work out wide by Phil Neville. It was all to little to late for the Blues, as City took all the points. We had another late shout for a penalty, this one looked more nailed on as Ossie was whipped down in the area. Ossie went ballistic, Rennie waved his claims away, and thoughts of a conspiracy by the men in black grow more and more with each game, as Moyesy says, 'we don't get penalties'. Some truth in that me thinks.

The Manchester outfit have took four out of six points available form our tussles this season. Not good enough if we harbor hopes of greater things. City is a team we should be doing better against, it seems of late not to be the case. Putting Christmas in to perspective however, is seven out of twelve points that good, me thinks not, when you take in the calibre of opponent. 2007 is now here, lets have that final push for Europe. We lie eighth in the Prem, a lot higher than this time last year, but for Everton FC still not good enough. I still have belief in the players, the manager, and for now even the board, but Europe this season is an absolute must. If the home form stays good, and we start picking up more on the road, this is definitely within our grasp. Starman goes to Joey Yobo. Nothing spectacular, but a solid performance form the centre half.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "We had no problems in the first half apart one free-kick just before half-time. But we come out in the second half and give them the lead. But even at 1-0 I still felt we could score a goal but we made it difficult by giving a second one away.

There is no doubt that Distin doesn’t get his foot to the ball and so in my mind that’s a penalty-kick. At worse it should have been a corner. The linesman is standing 15 yards away but he doesn’t give anything. I don’t like criticising but when it’s like that we have to accept it. But we are getting pretty fed up with it now." (01/01/07)

Everton Team News

Moyesy has a clean bill of health from yesterday's emphatic win against Newcastle. Stubbsey is still rated doubtful for the squad, and Tiny is still a a week or two away. Pisto won't be risked with Nuno and Nace both in good form. Me thinks Moyesy will not tinker with the starting line up, but Biffa may get more of a run out from the subs bench as to me Big Vic has looked tired of late.

The last time Everton played at the City of Manchester Stadium, we were on the end of a two nil reverse, with Danny Mills scoring a cracker. We were rooted firmly to the bottom of the Premiership, but one season later, we have Europe in our sights, and hopefully an unbeaten Christmas period. We only have to go back to the 2004/05 season when Tiny's first Everton goal earned us three points and also a sending off for the midfielder, for daring to remove his shirt. Everton go in search of their fourth consecutive clean sheet, and Phil Neville has pin pointed Everton's back four as crucial to our

Ace Goalscorer Phil Neville says: "Your foundations are at the back. We have a fantastic keeper and two great centre-halves - it is easy to play at full-back alongside those centre-halves. If we continue to keep things tight you know we will get goals with the forwards we have got. I really enjoy playing against Manchester City. It was the biggest derby for my old club and I enjoy going back there. We had a disappointing result last year and we thought we had beaten them here this year but they got a point with the last kick of the game. We are going there looking for three points. The fourth game of a hectic period is about keeping concentration, tight at the back and doing things right." (31/12/06)

Get Your Shirt On...
Lavo's Bet: My form of late is as good as the shite away form this season, abysmal. Ossie keeps tempting me, well his price of 16/1 certainly does. Sooner or later. Still having my 10p on AJ as well every match, the striker is good value at 13/2. Best of British !!
About The Opposition

Manchester City bad boy and serial mooner Joey Barton is out after his sending off last week. Ex Blue Richard Dunne is doubtful and ex shit 'ed Blinky Hamman, and Trevor Sinclair are definitely ruled out. City are in good form of late, recording a good away win at West Ham yesterday. Manager Stuart Pearce has seen a different Man City of late. Lets hope they regress to their poor form of a few weeks ago then.

Pearce says: "I think over the last two games we've showed a steely determination and resilience about our play and unless you show that on a daily basis, you are not going to get results on the road or claim back to back wins." (31/12/06)

City from: Weaver, Onuoha, Distin, Dunne, Thatcher, Miller, Richards, Dabo, Jordan, Ireland, Trabelsi, Beasley, Vassell, Corradi, Samaras, Dickov, Isaksson, Mills.
