A notable draw for the Blues at Sheffield yesterday was overshadowed by the injury to Tiny that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Moyesy described the injury as a blow, which is an understatement when you think of the importance our Australian talisman has to our future success. Everton have to get on with it now, but if yesterday showing is anything to go by it will be hard. Tiny who hobbled out of the play seconds before half time was involved in a lively looking Everton team for the first forty five minutes. The team that appeared for the second period, was not a patch on the first as Sheffield asked questions of our defence. I described the point as a notable draw, and I make no excuses for that, as make no mistake Sheffield United are no mugs on their home patch. Only four teams have turned them over in fourteen home games prior to yesterdays match, and with their Premiership status still not certain the Blues were on for a battle against the Yorkshire men.

Surprisingly for me anyway, Moyesy kept faith with the eleven that turned Watford over so easily last weekend. I thought Nace would have made way for Stubbsey for a match that was always going to be physical. In fairness that's the way football should be. If you do a job and a good job at that one week, you deserve your chance the week after, it keeps the other players on their toes. Nace had an excellent game in my view. I am no great fan of the injury prone left back, I would have Nuno fit any day, but his attacking up the left flank, along with his defending was good to see from one of Moyesy's fringe players. The Scots full back set up Everton's best chance of the first period when he turned in a cross for Tiny. The Aussie midfielder leapt to head the ball goal bound, beating Kenny hands down, only to be denied a goal by Davies on the Sheffield goal line.

Everton pressed and had possession, but as far as clear cut chances, that was it in the first half. As the seconds ticked by to the interval, Tiny leapt once again in the Sheffield box, but this time he landed awkwardly, and had to leave the pitch obviously in some discomfort. If it next season till we see you in action again Tim, lets hope it is on the European stage, in a Royal Blue shirt, it will be worth the wait, get well soon.

H-T 0-0

Neil Warnock must have laid into his players at half time, and reiterated the importance of Premiership status to a clubs coffers. The bollicking must have worked, as Sheffield upped their game, and put us on the back foot. In fact it took them only six minutes of the half to take the lead. Nace was beaten down the left flank which was bad enough, but Joey let Rob Hulse sneak in front of him to guide the ball past Tim Howard, to give the Blades the lead. Phil Neville told Joey in no uncertain terms about his poor defending, all to little to late.

Moyesy's reaction was instant with the ineffectual Biffa (I have tried with him, but enough is enough) being withdrawn and Vaughny added to inject a bit of pace up front. AJ was not having the best of days himself, but his none stop running is their for all to see. He chased a nothing ball back to Kenny, and the Blades keeper spilled the ball as AJ pounced, and he was brought down in a Pepe Reina'ish type moment. Penalty no doubt about it, and Mikky stepped up to thunder the ball in off the crossbar.

Everton know had the impetus and late on a free kick led to a scramble in the Blades box which was cleared. One all it ended, and that was a fair result. The draw coupled with defeats to Reading and Pompey have moved the Blues back to sixth, which in the end will be good enough for UEFA Cup. A few more twists and turns await us no doubt, but as long as we battle till the end there will be no complaints from me. Nace gets the nod for starman, on a day when no Blue stood head and shoulders above any of their team mates.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: I knew exactly what it was going to be like. Our last two away games at Watford and Sheffield United have been similar in style and we knew we'd have to compete and battle with them. I didn't think we played too well when we had the ball but we stuck at it. They are fighting to stay in the Premier League so they are not going to give things up lightly. I have to give our players a lot of credit for coming back.

I think he's had better days (AJ) because I thought their boys marshalled him very well. But he saw a mistake, got in and he could have actually taken the penalty! But we're happy enough to share them around.

We got James Vaughan on and we know what he is. He's lively and he's a young boy who we hope will improve. He's missed a lot of football in the last two years and we are trying to get him back." (04/03/07)

*

Off The Ball

* Neil Warnock, the Premierships resident mad man was up and down more times than a hookers slacks from the bench. As well as the referee, our players, the fans there was no one he wasn't gesticulating at.

* The linesman's flag snapping in half for no apparent reason. Buy British next time, instead of Chinese.

Everton Team News

Stubbsey returns to Moyesy's squad for the visit to Sheffield tomorrow, as me thinks the hard man centre half will start against Neil Warnock's battling side. If that is the case Nace will make way, with Roger and Phil Neville occupying the full back berths. Moyesy should heed the lessons of last weekends comprehensive victory at Watford, and go 4-4-2, with Biffa partnering Johnno up front. The four man in the middle will be Manny, Harry Hill, Tiny and Mikky, with Leon once again ready to spring off the bench at Moyesy's say so.

Tony Hibbert is included and will probably find himself on the bench after returning from injury. Unbelievably you have to go back to October 1972 for the Blues last winning League visit at Bramall Lane, and a similar scoreline tomorrow would make Everton's job of European qualification that much easier.

Alan Irvine says: "If we're going to push towards the top six, we're going to have to do our job and win half a dozen games. It is very close in the table, 10 games is a large chunk of the season and there are a lot of teams capable of getting that position. If we can keep our away form going it would be fantastic. It looks like Sheffield United are going to be okay but they will still be looking over their shoulders. They have not amassed enough points to really relax but I think they will be okay.

We will go there and they will be desperate for the three points to make sure they are in the Premiership next year. It is our job to make sure they don't get the points against us and that we get what we need." (02/03/07)

Get Your Shirt On...
Lavo's Bet:  Biffa is definitely due one, and after his sitter miss of last weekend at Watford, he should be doubly determined to get on the score sheet. Me thinks it the misfiring strikers day, so nail him at 13/2 for the first goal of the match.
About The Opposition

They have a mad man for a manager, but credit were credit is due he is doing the business in the Premiership on a shoe string budget. Chris Morgan has wiped the spit from his face and returns for the Yorkshire men, whilst Michael Tonge is suspended. Danny Webber is injured. Sheffield suffered their heaviest defeat last weekend when the shite turned them over 4-0, though the score flattered the shite when Steve G laaaaaa, went over like Emily Heskey in his hey day to win a penalty, how dare they slag AJ off. They find themselves just above the relegation positions, but should have enough about them to stay up, hopefully though not tomorrow.

Sheff Utd from: Kenny, Davis, Jagielka, Kozluk, Armstrong, Morgan, A Quinn, S Quinn, Fathi, Hulse, Stead, Kazim-Richards, Geary, Seck, Gillespie, Bromby, Bennett.

Mad Man Warnock says: People said Everton paid a lot of money, but there are not many exceptional players at that price, yet Andy is one of them. He's very unfortunate his face does not seem to fit England-wise, but personally I would love to see him have two or three games in the team. I think he would do a very good job because he is unpredictable, pacy and he works his socks off. That's why he is a team player. Everton may have spent £8.6million on him, but he has been the best buy of the season - value for money."
