Referee: Mike 'Ol Mother' Riley

Well its not often that I will congratulate a ref in one of my match reports, and especially not someone like Old Mother Riley, but yesterday the said ref got it spot on, and Everton duly collected three points as a result. After the madness of kopite Clattenburg the other week, my faith has been fleetingly restored, well at least till the next match by the men in black. Why I hear you all cry, or is that just the missus burning me bacon butties, well I will tell you. With minutes to go, a Brum player goes down feigning injury, and his own team mates do not put the ball out. With Everton winning back possession, Tiny Tim sportingly put the ball into touch so the player could receive treatment much to our annoyance with just minutes left on the clock. On play resuming Kapo, Brum's ginger haired odd ball, booted the ball out for a throw deep into Everton's half. The crowd and the players reacted to the ref, and in fairness to Old Mother Riley, he made a point of pointing to his watch for all the crowd to see to say you won't be getting away with that you cheat (that's called poetic licence, you know). As a consequence four minutes injury time went on the board, Steve Bruce raged aka Alex Ferguson style, I chuckled and Harry Hill and Vaughny just done what their paid to do, and put the Blues three points better off in the League Table, ironically deep in injury time.

Ok, it was not all down to that moment, but for me it was a pivotal point late on in the game. The Blues first half performance albeit the last ten minutes was off the highest quality. Stevie P, is looking more and more the player Moyesy promised us, and The Yak had by far his best game in a Blue shirt. It may be no coincidence that he looks a lot fitter than a few months ago, and maybe the keys to the Fridge have been hidden away by the backroom boys. Stubbsey went off early doors with an injury but the Jag slotted in neatly at centre half, looking far more comfortable there than in any of his midfield soirees. It was the Yak who put a lovely finishing touch to a superb Everton move including Mikky and Peanuts to hand the Blues a fully deserved 1-0 lead after nine minutes. The Blues should have put the game to bed by half time, but it was not to be, and as Sausage was sent off to the Chang and sausage roll shop at half time we pondered what the second period had in store.

Half Time: EVERTON 1 Birmingham 0

After our said beers and tuck and chatting about what an honour it was to have Howard Kendall Everton's Greatest Manager on the pallets in the Bluekipper Lounge prior to kick off, we sat back in our pews expecting the goals to flow. Well we were in for a shock, as our first half performance was a distant memory as the game became one of poor passing, and quality all round. Of course there were glimpses of skill, as whenever Mikky is on the ball an air of anticipation and excitement gets to you, and with Peanuts joining in the skill factor at times was excellent. However hard we tried though, we could not put the resilient Brummies.

With ten left on the clock, Bruce brought on Forssell as Brum had a corner. As he ran into the area from the dug out, you could sense Everton's unease over who to mark as the new face joined the attack. That unease cost us a goal as that man Kapo steered the corner home to bring the scores level.

Moyesy's response was instant as James Vaughan made his long awaited Goodison return replacing Ossie. You had the gut feeling though that if we could not break Brum down from a winning position our job would now be ten times harder as they would defend even more for their life. Everton pushed and Tommy Grav joined the party looking for a way through to get the points. Now into injury time and after another goal mouth scramble the ball fell to Harry Hill on the right hand edge of the eighteen yard box, and he unleashed an unstoppable shot past Taylor to send Goodison into raptures. What a strike, from Lee who is not famed for his long range efforts, but this one was up there with the best of the weekend in the Premiership. Better was still to come as Brum pressed up from the kick off, the returning James Vaughan was put clear by Harry Hill. The youngster showed his strength and skill by holding off Brum's pressure, and he drilled his shot low into the Street End net to seal all three points.

Old Mother blew up, and Goodison went mental, and it is great to be there on days like that, but not good on the heart. Give me a comfortable two nil win, done before half time any day. The players were that delighted they embarked on a lap of honour, quite bizarre, but great for the fans as we all stayed back to cheer our heroes on.

So that's four wins on the bounce, two back to back Prem wins, and its Nuremberg on Thursday in the UEFA Cup. On the pitch things are definitely on the way up for the Blues. We have stayed in the top ten even with Tiny, AJ and Vaughny out for most of the season. Last eight of the League Cup, in the Group Stages of a European Competition, and like most Blues there is more often a smile on my face than my usual grimace. Things could have been different leaving Goodison yesterday, if the two injury time goals had not gone for us, our smiles would have been long faces, but they were not, and we drank long into the night.

Starman, there were a few candidates. Peanuts for one, Mikky as ever, but The Yak gets the nod from me, in his best game in a Blue shirt to date. His goal, his lays off, and on occasions holding the ball up when needed. He is at a club were all the players play for each other, look out for each other, and at long last the message seems to be sinking in with him. Well played Yak, keep it up, the boy and the boys done well.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "When it went to 1-1 I thought 'I can't believe this is going to be the result on a day when we should have had the game comfortably won'. But there were a few incidents a few weeks ago when things didn't go for us and I told the players things will change, we will get the roll of the ball at the right time and maybe we got good breaks at the right time. I was enjoying it at the end. It was a tough game but one I thought we had control of and even though we didn't hit the heights I hoped we would I thought we were in control and would see the game out.

As it was, we were put under a bit of pressure near the end and they got the goal. I said at half-time that we had a difficult midweek game and we were given a chance to have the match won in the opening 30 minutes and then we could have coasted through the second half but as long as we didn't get the second goal there was always the danger of us being in difficulty. Our play was really good in the first half and some of it was excellent. If anything, we could have tied it up with a bow on it. Nevertheless, I thought we may have been a bit lethargic in the second period after the extra-time in midweek but I still thought we were doing enough to see the game out." (04/11/07)

Off The Ball

* We can sleep safe again, Operation Goodiosn was an absolute success. Every season when the powers that be do Operation Goodison, not one steward moves, all pre planned no doubt.

* Tommy Grav enetered the fray with five minutes to go, and the Goodison camera man pointed his camera at Harry Hill before realising his mistake and then pointing it at fellow baldy The Grav. (04/11/07)

Everton Team News

You have to go back to the opening few games of the season when Everton last posted back to back Prem victories. We are currently on a winning streak of three in League and Cups, and on paper this is a home banker. Unfortunately though the game is not played on paper, but we do face a side that have not won at Goodison since 1957 in Brum. If we have any aspirations of a top six finish these are the sides like Derby last week, that we should be sweeping aside.

After the few changes in the midweek win at Luton, Moyesy should welcome back a few of his regulars. Tim Howard will take over from Kepler in the sticks, and no doubt Mikky will step back up to the plate, after his midweek rest if past fit. Tiny will start, just how can you leave him out, but once again Moyesy's selection posers will be up front with Vaughny now throwing his hat into the ring. Four just won't go into two, or maybe four won't go into one either, and the Manager's hardest job will be to keep his sidelined stars happy, what a fantastic problem to have. Phil and Hibbo are back from their Derby Day misdemeanors, and will both be in the squad, though Hibbo me thinks will be an unlikely starter. Leighton is still out, Nuno may carry on his good work from midweek, though Phil can play there if Moyesy goes 4-4-2. We shall see it was easier predicting things when our squad numbered twelve, progress me thinks !!

Jogger's XI To Start: Howard, Valente, Lescott, Yobo, Jagielka, Arteta, Carsley, Cahill, Osman, Neville, Yakubu

Everton from: Howard, Wessels, Hibbert, Neville, Jagielka, Stubbs, Lescott, Yobo, Valente, Baines, Osman, Arteta, Cahill, Carsley, Pienaar, Gravesen, McFadden, Vaughan, Anichebe, Yakubu.

Moyesy says: "We have got one or two players carrying injuries and we will wait until tomorrow to see how they all are. Andrew Johnson is close to coming back but he needs to do some training next week and we will see then about him coming back into contention. It has been important to shuffle the squad a little because of the number of games we have got. In the main over the years we have tended to be very stable in our team selection, partly because of our numbers and what we have had available. But I don't think if we just had a small numbers of players right now we would be able to get away with it. We have needed the numbers and we will continue to need the numbers.

It is an important couple of weeks for us. We started with the Uefa Cup game, got a good result and that has followed in the Premier League and in midweek. We always knew it was going to be a big period for us. It has been three good victories for us and we are hoping to make it four. I thought in our games against Larissa and Derby we played much better. You couldn't say that about the match at Luton but if you look at Luton's record, they are very good at home. We were delighted to be in the cup and to get through and in the main we are playing much better." (02/11/07)

Lavo's Best Bet

* Tiny Tim, he is on fire and can be backed at 8/1 for the first goal. Other than that get on Heather Mills McCartney to become certified mentally stable at a whopping 1000/1. Topical stuff hey !!

About The Opposition

Mikael Forssell and midfielder Johan Djourou have been passed fit, and a decision on Wilson Palacios will be made later on to include him in the squad, as he has the small problem of his brothers kidnap to contend with.

Steve Bruce on Moyesy (not literally) says: " Just look at what David Moyes has done. He took over when things were not great but got them stable and they've gradually improved. Look at their strikeforce. They have Yakubu, Andy Johnson and James McFadden. Then you have Tim Cahill. They have the nucleus of a really decent Premiership side and are difficult to beat."

Brum From: Taylor, Kelly, Schmitz, Queudrue, De Ridder, Muamba, Nafti, Larsson, Kapo, Jerome, Forssell, Djourou, McSheffrey, Danns, O'Connor, Parnaby, Palacios, Kingson.
