After the highs of the start of the season, the optimism and expectation of our Euro adventure, the Blues have fallen to the ground with a huge bump in the last week or so. Manure at home, worse was to come against Kharkiv midweek, and the today's under par performance against Villa. Admittedly no Mikky, Tim Howard or the Grav and our forwards just can't buy a goal at the minute. Clean sheets are a thing of the past, and we have to go back to May since we last kept one. We started a run of three Sunday games on the bounce at Villa, but divine intervention was thin on the ground in Birmingham. Moyesy kept faith with Big Vic, The Yak paid the price for his ineffectual display in Europe on Thursday, as did Faddy and Harry Hill. The Blues have two main problems at the minute and they are that we can't keep a clean sheet, and the forwards can't score a goal. This is obviously a slight problem in the terms of a football match and winning them. So after Thursday's poor tactical performance, Moyesy went back to a trusted 4-4-2 formation, but without Mikky in the side Everton are just not at the races. Stephen Pienaar was added to the eleven to add a bit of craft and guile to the Blues midfield, but throughout the game he just looked to light weight to make a difference. Ossie has gone backwards in his performances since his blistering start to the season, and poor old AJ well were do we start with him. No one can ever knock his effort, running and fight for the cause, but he may as well be classed as a right winger than a out and out striker, as with the Blues having no width in their set up, that's were the England hit man spends most of his time. It took just twenty odd minutes for John Carew to open the scoring when after some less than impressive defending from Joey and Leighton allowed the Villa forward to blast the ball home from twelve yards out. The Blues had their moments, Joey pushing forward and hitting a goal bound volley right into Zat Knights mush. Villa should have gone in two nil up at the break except for some great goal line defending from Hibbo when he cleared Agbonlahor's header. Villa did not have it all their own way. Big Vic and AJ linked up well as the big Nigerian nodded down for AJ to see his goal bound effort saved by Carson. Ossie and AJ had tame efforts at Carson's net, but it was the on loan shite keeper who set up Villa's second, when his long clearance wasn't picked up by Joey and Roger. Gabriel Agbonlahor controlled the high ball superbly as the Everton back four claimed for offside and the Villa youngster slotted under Kepler's body to give Villa an unassailable two goal lead. The Blues back four at times look to have no organisation, and me thinks its time for Stubbsey to have a run of a few games to add a bit of direction at the back, and I am sure he will start in the Carling Cup this week. Individually we know Everton have got good players, the problem of late is that we are not organising ourselves well enough to control matches. Starman goes to Tony Hibbert, mainly because he was best of a bad bunch. Good in the tackle, and if he could just master how to pass a ball, he would be the finished article.

Moyesy says: "If you concede goals like we do and can't score at the other end then it's a recipe for disaster. We didn't clear the first one, there was a slip in the box and maybe the goalie could have saved it as well. I think when it leaves to goalkeeper's foot it may have been off (2nd goal). But you play to the referee's whistle, that is what you teach children. Our centre halves have got to get back and not wait for the linesman's flag. It wasn't a hard decision (Yakubu). We have good players. I pick what I see and I will continue to do so." |

What did you think of the match? Did Moyesy get his team selection and tactics right? e-mail info@bluekipper.com after the game. *
Oh dear, where is Everton heading towards? The league campaign's been
stop-start if not shaky, and the UEFA Cup had not begun in the most
auspicious of starts. I'm worried, I'm really worried. I hope sincerely
with the return of Cahill and Vaughan, things can only get better. Regards |

Moyesy will be utilising his squad to the full over the coming weeks as the games come thick and fast. Mikky Arteta and Tommy Grav should be fit and I would expect one if not both of them to start. Tim Howard is still doubtful, but Kepler in goal has proved more than an able deputy for Moyesy, and there should be no problem in the goalkeeping department. Moyesy though has got concerns at the back, as no clean sheets can be claimed form this season. Me thinks Stubbsey may get a run out sooner rather than later, but it could be at the expense of Hibbo, with Roger slipping into the full back spot. Maybe, maybe not, but with the goals against column not looking to hot, changes may have to be made. Stephen Pienaar should also be ok, but Moyesy may go more defensively against Villa, so the South African may find himself on the bench. Everton looked a more livelier prospect when Big Vic came on against the Mentalists, and it would not suprise me if he started in place of The Yak. As they say football its a funny old game!! Villa against the Blues is the most played fixture in top flight footy and the sides are meeting for the 185th time, Sausage claims to have seen most of them. Skipper Phil says: "The games are coming thick and fast and that is what we want. But you won’t hear any moaning from the lads. This is exactly the type of position that we want to be in. We want to be involved in big matches in midweek and big matches at the weekend. Hopefully we can pick up. We are looking to make Goodison a fortress again but, above all, we need to start keeping clean sheets. That is important as it is something we haven’t done this season. But it’s not just down to the defenders. It’s up to the midfielders and the attackers to chip in. We have got to defend better as a team. I’m sure it will come good. We will need to be right on it from the start, though, against Villa. They beat Chelsea in their last home game, so it shows you the quality of the opposition we are playing. There are group of teams in the middle of the table who are capable of beating anyone and Villa are firmly in that group. It should be a good game. We have got to make sure we get our legs back and recover. We have got to show that we are a good team. The supporters come to watch us in their droves, home and away, and it makes you proud to play for this Club." (22/09/07) Lavo's XI To Start: Wessels, Lescott, Stubbs, Yobo, Baines, Gravesen, Arteta, Neville, Carsley, Johnson, Anichebe Everton from: Howard, Wessels, Ruddy, Hibbert, Lescott, Stubbs, Jagielka, Baines, Valente, Stubbs, Osman, Carsley, Neville, Arteta, Gravesen, Pienaar, McFadden, Anichebe, Johnson, Yakubu. Defeat at Shittteeeh followed a fantastic home win against Chelski, so Villa like ourselves are the perennial under achievers. On their day they can mix it with the best, but also on their day they can be well shite. Lets hope its the latter Villa who turn up on Sunday. John Carew will lead the Aston Villa attack despite a nagging groin problem and forward options have been cut as Marlon Harewood has a knee problem. Centre-back Curtis Davies. who is yet to make his debut, will have to be content with a place on the bench. Aston Villa from: Carson, Mellberg, Laursen, Knight, Bouma, Agbonlahor, Barry, Reo-Coker, Young, Moore, Carew, Taylor, Davies, Petrov, Maloney, Gardner. |
