Bloomin' marvellous. Everton finished off in style last night what they started in Brann last week with a demolition of SK Brann 8-1 on aggregate. Records tumbled as the Blues achieved seven straight victories in Europe for the first time, and hit six in a European encounter also for the first time. It sounds so easy, but the first twenty minutes told a different tale, as the Blues were caught on the hop as the Norwegian Champs went in search of an early goal, that would have brought the tie back to life. Their 1500 traveling fans who had the most annoying songs heard in a long time at Goodison certainly cheered their boys on, and if it was not for the alertness of Harry Hill, and a good stop from Tim Howard, last nights demolition may never have occurred. The players realised before it was too late that they had a game on their hands and didn't they do well. Taking nothing away from the Boys in Blue, but after The Yak curled one into the Park Ends onion bag, Brann's fight disintegrated, and it became a stroll for the Blues. By the half time interval AJ had made it two when his low drive from the edge of the box found the corner of the net. Moyesy could not have wished for anything more, and off came first half man of the match by a street Harry Hill for Hibbo, and Tiny Tim was replaced by Manny as Moyesy no doubt had his first visit of the season to Eastlands on his mind, lets hope its not our last. Half Time: Everton 2 SK Brann 0 The second period was a stroll with Yakubu adding a delightful second after great work from Peanuts. The Yak put two defenders on their arse, as he twisted and turned on the edge off the box and slotted the ball away. Goal of the night, or so we thought, better was still to come. Brann pulled one back after a speculative long range free kick found its way in, but normal service was resumed when Mikky fortuitously found the net after his deflected effort went in off the post. The Yak completed his hat trick with a simple tap in from close range, and Moyesy then sent on Big Vic for the hat trick hero, and The Yak left the pitch to a standing ovation. Problem with The Yak, what problem. Peanuts hit the post, Roger tried his hand from thirty odd yards, but AJ rounded proceedings off with a rocket in injury time down at the Street End, with the goal of the night. Starman, a few candidates here. Peanuts was superb, and it shows how much we have missed him. AJ ran his balls off and was rewarded with two goals. Harry Hill in the first half was immense, but The Yak's hat trick tips the nod in his favour, and he won me a few bob to boot. My tent has gone, and I am back in a caravan now, life is good !! It was a stroll, but it has sent a message out to the rest of our UEFA Cup opponents that we are in this to win it. Fiorentina next, and yes the calibre of the opposition is about to rise. Don't think we have had it easy up to now. Zenit the Russian Champs who we done at Goodison in December, knocked out our old foes Villarreal, and Nuremberg narrowly went out in the last minute to Benfica. The ride is about to get harder, but it is one ride I would not miss for the world. Fiorentina here we come, bring them on. Full Time: Everton 6 SK Brann 1 (Agg 8-1)

On a night when club records were broken, it was good to be able to enjoy a match without having to sit there biting your nails – this is what the current everton set up is all about this season – much more clinical and much more professional. True, we have had 1 or 2 lapses, but on the whole, we have been much better this season So 7 straight European wins, the record match score, and the 3rd Hat trick (after Ball and Gray) and we march on to the last 16 where we are likely to meet a team much different to those that we have played so far. Italian teams are often very disciplined (excluding Materazzi), and tough to break down, whereas all of our previous European games have been wide open with lots of space. We are going to need to be very disciplined as well, but they are beatable, and there is no reason why we cannot continue to progress. Having already been to see a game at their stadium, it will be very vocal with a great atmosphere, and this is the next type of test for the team Tonight it took a while to get the 1st goal, but once we scored, the team seemed to relax and enjoy their football playing some excellent stuff at times. The goals were top drawer, and although that is what we are coming to expect from Yakubu, it was good to see AJ score 2 screamers as well, and it cant be bad for confidence when your 2 strikers hit 5 goals. It was a shame that we conceded, but credit to Bergen, they kept going and could have scored another towards the end. On a positive note I thought Pienaar was superb, and showed how much we missed him in the last month, despite getting some great results. I still feel we missed him badly, especially against Chelsea, and think we should be looking to make his signing permanent asap. Cahill continues to struggle when we play 4-4-2 and Manny Fernandes again looked too casual, but it wasn’t a night for negatives. The fight to finish 4th starts again on Monday, and hopefully we will go to City on a high and get a good result there for once – and get used to the surroundings before our next visit there on May 14th. Graeme Holmes. |

Moyesy says: It was great to score six and it was a great performance. We have scored a few goals here at Goodison. It was a professional job and we could not take any chances with the team we put out tonight. For the first half hour we did not play that well so the first goal was crucial. The finishing and the quality of our play was excellent." (22/02/08) |

* The two paramedics running from the Street End to the stricken Brann player by the dug out, and giving up half way over. The crowd pissed themselves laughing. Thank Christ it wasn't serious. * Nuno ending up in Row A of the Street End after going arse over tit chasing a ball. * Stubbsey in the crowd cheering his old team mates on. |
|
* I think we are going to batter them tonight. 4-0. AJ & The Yak getting a pair each. Ryan, Bournemouth |

* As a 51 year old Blue, boy have I suffered with my emotions over the years, but hey forget the black days we are back to where we were, a respected top European team. Great result last night, all the papers are praising the Yak and AJ, no arguments here but the unsung heroes in this team need to be mentioned. Not that I give a stuff over the English team but why hasn't anyone mentioned that Jags is as good if not better at the moment than Ferdinand, Terry or Woodgate. Lescott should be in the team instead of Cole anyway. Cars gets better with age, Tiny and the Spanish magician, well say no more and the Yak is awesome. Don't know how anyone rates Manny tho if he's worth £8 mil what price Peanuts? He and Joleon must be fighting over player of the year the lad doesn't stop running. Yobo must be concerned for his place in the central defence so why don't we play him at right back, I now he ain't keen playing there but that's our weak spot at the moment so... Anyway bring on Florence or whatever they call themselves. WayneWales |

Moyesy has a fully fit squad to take into the return leg against Brann which sees us holding a two nil lead after our excellent away victory in Bergen last week. With big games on the horizon, most notably at Man City on Monday evening, me thinks Moyesy has enough strength in depth to give one or two names a rest, most notably Phil Neville and Mikky Arteta, who both by their own high standards have been off the boil a bit of late. Lessons have been learnt from the Oldham FA Cup defeat though, and the Boss will not be making wholesale changes, but with the likes of Hibbo, Nuno, Peanuts, Big Vic and Vaughany all waiting to stake their claim, Moyesy has enough at his disposal not to throw away a two goal advantage. The Yak fresh from a week off, after his enforced week off should lead the line with AJ, and if the Blues grab a first half goal, I would expect both of them to make way for the likes of Big Vic and Vaughany to see us through the tie. The Blues broke their own Club record of six straight wins in Europe by winning in Brann last week, and we should be confident off making it seven against the Norwegian Champions.

Brann won their first National Title in forty four years last season by a clear four points from their nearest rivals. They did it with Premiership experience in the shape of Erik Bakke who returned to his native Norway after spells at Leeds and Aston Villa. Brann just snuck in through the back door though to the last 32 of the UEFA Cup, when they finished 3rd in their Group behind SV Hamburg and Basle. They ended up on four points after beating Dinamo Zagreb, and drawing with Rennes. The Norwegian League has not kicked off yet, but Brann are already in the mix for next season Champions League. Their last League fixture was back in early November when they got thrashed 3-0 by mid table Tromso, but by then they had already won the Title. Brann have just spent the last week at La Manga in Spain, and if they are anything like the English clubs who use the facilities there, they may be to pissed to play properly. They have an uphill battle to knock three past Everton, and go on to face either Fiorentina or Rosenborg.
