Referee: Lee 'Perry' Mason

Howard had recovered from his virus to take his place in goal. Moyesy decided to replace Roger with Bainsey and Victor Anichebe was replaced by Maro Fellaini. Ossie and Arteta started on the flanks.

The game started at a frenetic pace and both teams had chances in the opening minutes. Arteta took control and drove forward but his curling shot went high and wide. The game continued to be quite open and Everton seemed to have the better of Hull when going forward. A great move from Neville, Arteta found Ossie, who pulled his shot wide. He should have scored.

Hull had a bit of pressure, but Yobo and Jagielka held firm, but from a corner Hull took the lead when Turner beat Fellaini to head strongly home. 1-0 Hull.

Everton came back when Neville crossed and Fellaini headed across for The Yak to volley goalwards, but it was saved by the keeper. Everton finally got their foot on the ball and started to come into the game. Some good work between Neville Ossie and Arteta came to nothing when Bainesy hit a speculative shot from 35 yards out which went wide.

King hit a free kick just wide for Hull with Howard suggesting he had it covered. You could see if Everton passed the ball around they could get through the Hull side. The problem was they couldn't get Arteta and Osman on the ball to do it. Arteta took a quick free kick to Cahill, but it was called offside.

Marlon King was proving a handful to the Everton defence, whereas Everton only had The Yak upfront, who was being marked tightly. The Nigerian international wasn't getting enough support from the midfield players. The one time he did was when Cahill had a great chance to put Fellaini in but his pass was over hit. One of the problems was that Bainesy, Yobo and Neville were hitting hopeful balls instead of playing it on the deck.

HALF TIME: Hull City 1 EVERTON 0

Moyesy made 2 half time subs. Lescott replaced Baines and Saha replaced Castllio to give The Yak some much need support. Saha almost made an immediate impact as he and The Yak both went for a loose ball from a corner but it is bravely blocked by Hull keeper Myhill who got a boot on his bonce for his troubles.

But within minutes Everton were 2-0 down when a corner was headed in by Phil Neville, but some questions must be asked to Howard. Everton came back when Arteta was fouled. From the free kick Jagielka had a chance but it was cleared away. Even 2-0 down you still thought we could score and get back in the game.

Some great movement from Saha saw him nearly open his Everton account. He spun one way and then the other and Arteta fed him and his shot was well saved by the keeper. Everton had put Arteta in the middle of the park and were getting more possetion. Saha was making a nuisance of himself and a few chances fell Everton's way. Firstly a goalward Saha shot was blocked, then Lescott shot over the bar.

Everton were now playing with more purpose and that man Tim Cahill did the business. Ossie had shot which was blocked. It came to Johnny on the spot and Cahill smashed it in via the cross bar. Saha had made a big differnce. He is a player. Everton were now on top and Saha's shot was put out for a corner. Arteta took it quickly to Neville and he hit a quick crossshot which deflected into the arms of the keeper's arms.

Everton were absolutly battering Hull now. They got a second when Saha linked well with the Yak and he crossed to allow Ossie to crash the ball on. Hull made substitutions to try and quell the storm, but Everton kept coming forward. Saha again had a chance and he shot, but the keeper saved and the ref gave a goal kick.

Vaughany came on for The Yak. Everton kept going for the winner, but it never came. Three own goals in 3 games is a terrible stat and there seems no confidence in the back 4 and keeper. Everton came back well in the second half. It begs the question why didn't Everton play until the second half?

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "We didn't play very well but I don't think we deserved to be 2-0 down. Goals change games but I didn't think we played terribly badly - we just lacked a little devilment in the final third and our play was a little slow. But we got better in the second half.

It was two set pieces today and two set pieces against Stoke that have caused us problems. Those things can be corrected but we've been making a few individual mistakes as well and if people keep making mistakes they have to be accountable because we can't continue conceding goals the way we're doing just now.

In the second half we got better and didn't drop off after the Uefa Cup. The players worked really hard but we know that is how they are. But I'm disappointed we didn't win the game."

Everton Team News

Moyesy has selection posers at last, and midfield will be his problem area. Maro will no doubt return after his European exclusion from Thursday evening, but it is doubtful Starman of the night Segundo Castillo will make way. The Manager will probably rest one or two, and I see Ossie making way for Maro especially with a big Cup tie and the clash against the shite all in the next week.

Big Vic seems certain to shake his knock off, but will probably drop down to the bench. Will he pick Roger or not or give the lad a blow against Hull. Me thinks Moyesy will stick with the defender and his rest will come against Blackburn in the Carling Cup in midweek. Carlo Nash is also on standby with the news that first choice and under fire keeper Tim Howard is suffering with a virus which is definitely affecting his performances.

Moyesy still has to do without long term absentees Steven Pienaar, Tony Hibbert and Lars Jacobsen, but new boy Louis Saha is not far away from full fitness. This is the Blues first meeting with Hull since 1964 when the Blues did them in the FA Cup. Its the first League meeting since 1955, and it is thought that the players who were in action that day, will not be playing tomorrow. The Blues have beaten both Premiership new boys on the road this season, and now its the turn of Hull City, let battle commence.

Moyesy says: "It's not as bad as first thought. Victor is walking about now. He's not trained today but we will hopefully know a bit more tomorrow. There are one or two knocks and bruises. Tim is still suffering from a virus so we will have to see how he is." We might make changes," he declared, "Partly because we have had a game in midweek. I will look at it and see who is ready to come in.

In a way, even though we have not made too many changes, I feel as if I'm rebuilding a new side. Partly because we have players out injured, and we've had the new players too. It's not been free-flowing and we have not been able to slip back into the gear we were in last season. The injuries to key players and bringing in players late has meant we have found it difficult to get in the groove. But I am sure it will come. What we need to get is get the boys from last season fit and playing as regularly as we can get them.

Hull have started the season well, they have had some really good results and are dangerous and I think Phil Brown has done a great job there in how he has got them going. I have been there to watch games but never taken a team so that's new - it will be good for Hull and we are looking forward to it. I have always thought the start of the season is not a great time to play the newly-promoted teams but we have done fine with the teams we have played so far. " (20/09/08)

Lavo's Best Bet

* £10 on The Yak goes without saying, and after five bets we were a tenner up, but Liege's Mbokani put paid to another fifty quid going in the pot when Yak opened the Blues account on Thursday. So another tenner on the Blues front man tomorrow, and it will either be fifty quid up or a tenner down in my end of season piss up pot.

Apart from The Yak, the Blues will threaten from set pieces, so a fiver retainer will be on Mikky to do the first goal biz at 12/1.

About The Opposition

Midfielder George Boateng could return for Hull now that he has resumed training after a thigh injury. Nick'you prick' Barmby is hoping to shake off a calf problem while Richard Garcia has overcome a virus and Daniel Cousin is set to make his debut.

Phil 'The Tash' Brown says: "Fortunately for us we are meeting Everton on the back of a European game. Hopefully it will hamper their preparations and we can take advantage of that. I'm not going to say it is an easy advantage or we are going to walk all over Everton, but if we are still in the game with 75 minutes on the clock, then hopefully fitter legs will reap the rewards." Hull From: Myhill, Mendy, McShane, Gardner, Dawson, Geovanni, Marney, Ashbee, Halmosi, King, Windass, Barmby, Boetang, Cousin, Garcia
