Everton's First Captain - Nick Ross 1888-1889
On 8th September 1888, Nick Ross became Everton's first ever captain.
He was transferred from Preston to Everton in 1888 where he was reportedly paid £10 per month - a significantly above-average wage for a footballer at the time.
Although Nick only played 19 games for the Toffees, the Scottish defender was recognised as one of the finest defenders to pull on an Everton shirt.
James Catton of the Athletic News reported: "His teeth were discoloured almost green near the gums and he hisses through them as he played. He was the demon back, the most brilliant back of his day, if not of all time. The best I ever saw."
