NOT BILL GATES

Since we won the FA Cup in 1995 our average gates and final league position have been:

2010-11. 36, 039. 7th.

2009-10. 36,725. 8th.

2008-09. 35,667. 5th.

2007-08. 36,955. 5th.

2006-07. 36,739. 6th.

2005-06. 36,827. 11th.

2004-05. 36,834. 4th.

2003-04. 38,837. 17th.

2002-03. 38,481. 7th.

2001-02. 34,004. 15th. David Moyes appointed in March 2002.

2001-01. 34,131. 16th.

1999-00. 34,880. 13th.

1998-99. 36,202. 14th.

1997-98. 35,355. 17th.

1996-97. 36,188. 15th.

1995-96. 35,439. 6th.

So David Moyes's arrival added over 4,000 to the average league gate for his first two seasons. That dropped by 1,000 after seventeenth in his second season but has consistently stayed well above previous figures ever since.

What it shows is that Evertonians will turn up when they feel there are playing improvements and there is some hope of winning a trophy. It gives the lie to the garbage that we could never increase gates in a new stadium with better facilities and without obstructed views. With a winning team in a new stadium there's no question we could get averages well over 40,000. There's no question either of the positive David Moyes Affect on playing fortunes and club finances. Since Moyesy arrived our gates have only been badly affected after the disappointment of finishing seventeenth in 2004. Last season gates fell due to big disappointment after pre-season high expectations. This season like everyone else we'll have to deal with the fact that there's less money to spend because of the depression. If we don't get off to a good start this time our average league gate will drop below 36,000 for only the second time since Moyesy arrived.

It's up to the players to make up for last season's bad start to make sure that doesn't happen. They owe it to the fans who show up in such numbers every season.

It's all very well saying the club haven't spent money because of the depression, but the ordinary fans are still finding the money to buy season tickets, away match tickets, programmes and other Everton merchandise. Why can't Kenwright and some other board members cough up some money for a change.

As I understand it we have about 3-4,000 'obstructed view' seats at Goodison. All modern stadiums are designed with clear views so the Old Lady is always going to suffer by comparison with any new stadium, whether it's Arsenal or Middlesborough or Bolton or Derby. Tottenham are in the same boat as we are, which is why they want to to move to a new stadium despite spending millions completely upgrading White Hart Lane. These days nobody wants to be dodging around pillars or ducking below roofs to follow the flight of the ball. Facilities and expectations have moved on so there's no point being blind or sentimental about it. If we had a successful team in a stadium with clear views and a bigger capacity I have no doubt our gates would easily get near to 50,000. Manchester City are a clear example.

I don't agree with you Lee I've got to say....9 times out of ten when I go to watch a game at our ground I get a decent seat. I'm 6 ft plus but leg room is normally pretty decent as well as the view. You should check with the ticket office that the seat number you're enquiring about isn't restricted viewing. But I agree with you Andy #1....we have a very good squad and despite not much prospect of signing reinforcements we shouldn't be down in the mouth about it

Totally agree with these sentiments. Some people think we should be signing 30mill plus players and have a state of the art stadium. We just ain't got the money so let's enjoy this season for whatever it brings. Remember, " One Evertonian is worth......."

There were considerably fewer away supporters at Goodison last season which would have affected the average figure.

I agree that a new ground with better seating would increase the average attendance. However, one of the key questions is by how much we could increase it by. Personally, I don't think we could average 50,000 (unless being really succesful which you can't rely on). For me a capacity of 50,000 in the hope of getting an average of say 45,000 would be a good achievement. Totally agree with Andy (1) also.

Got to agree with Andy from Warrington, spot on mate. Let's hope for a good start. It would be great to get a couple of quality new faces in but if not then we can do well with what we've got (we'll always have a few moaners whatever we do!) COYB!

With a new stadium we would easily increase numbers. The seating at Goodison is terrible, unless you have a season ticket youll be watching the game through a letter box.

And it's up to the fans who go to get behind the team and give them full-on support. So we've not spent any money, so what ? This is still the best squad of players we've had since the mid-80's - Moysey said so himself - so given the finish we had last year, all we need to add is a good start and given an even break on the injury front, this team CAN, SHOULD and hopefully WILL challenge for at least a European place in 2012-13. Stop the moaning, start supporting !!!! COYB !!!!
