There were always going to be thousands of people locked out because of the restricted capacity, so how the hell would leaving the pub earlier solve people getting locked out? That doesn't solve the problem, the problem was caused when Everton reduced the capacity by a further 5%. Those 5% were locked outside in the pissing down rain. Ferg. (03/11/04)

Simple

Leave the pub earlier. Daveboyblue1. (01/11/04)

Get Real

I was meeting several mates before the PNE game, and we decided we'd meet in the Blue House for a change. Because of traffic, some of them turned up late and we ended up walking up to Gwladys Street at 7.40pm. I had thought to myself at 7.20 that we probably wouldn't get in, so by now, I was positive we wouldn't. Surely it's not just me who realised that there was going to be high demand??
Anyway, I'm glad to say we got in, and we counted ourselves lucky. If we hadn't got in, I certainly wouldn't be shouting the odds at the clubs backroom staff - reduced price tickets, loads of away supporters, low capacity - you don't need a PhD to work out that some fans were not not going to get in. If you were one of them, maybe you'll remember the day you were turned away from Goodison when you think you've got time to get another round in. Highbury anyone? Suz Mac. (01/11/04)

Access all areas?

I don't know how many were locked out , but I would put the figure in thousands. The gates just closed at 8ish, well before the players came out. Please can we have some organisation at Goodison. "Access all areas ?".

Fans Should Have Been There Early

Just logged on to read the backlash re "the lock out". For any so called season ticket holding, long standing, taking the grand kids, been there in the darkest moments, Coventry 0-0 moaning bastards who rolled up to the gates at 7:45 (8pm) kick off, we're 3rd in the league, and thought he could walk in and choose his seat, must be from another planet. If he is a long standing supporter then he will remember years gone by, before all ticket games, when paying at the gate was always a problem.

I got in the queue for the top balcony at 7:20 and WAS able to choose my seat, it was not long, 7:45 ish, before the seats around me filled up. The club can not take any blame what'so ever for the lock out, they offered tickets in advance albeit for the Park end, and warned supporters to arrive early.
For some reason and historically, it is some Evertonians right to arrive 1 minute before kick off, gain entry, get a pie, buy a programme, go the bog and get to his seat before the ball is kicked and NOT QUEUE FOR ANYTHING.
EFC is a big club and 36,000 odd supporters every week means you either turn up at the ground 30 mins early or loose out. As it turns out the ground was full to the reduced capacity of 36,000 last night so some people were always going to be unhappy, but please learn from last night and arrive early and you will not be disappointed.

Long standing season ticket holder, was there Coventry 0-0,
travel to away games, cry and laugh, hoping the bubble doesn't burst, shit ! Arsenal away, Evertonian. Peter Manning. (30/10/04)

Capacity Only 20,000

If the 2000 fans locked out would have got to the game early, then another 2000 would have been locked out. The 'get there early' comment from Everton doesn't work. What they failed to do was communicate to the fans that the capacity was down to 20,000 for Everton fans. They could have told the local press, this web site and even their own. They didn't. The 7000 preston fans , plus the reduction of the Everton end by 20% (which should never be done again) was wrong. Why don't they say they were wrong. Tell the fans what's going on before the event not after. Steve Cook. (30/10/04)

Club to Blame

The incompetence and complacency of those running Everton FC near ceases to amaze me. After the farce against Leyton Orient a couple of years ago, surely it would never be allowed to happen again? Well it has, and according to Everton it's the fans own fault they were locked out!
It was not the fans who decided to make the game pay at the gate, thus reducing the capacity by 10% (when 7000 tickets have already gone to the away team).
It was not the fans who reduced the capacity by a further 10% (for no good reason it seems).
Why did Everton not realise that with reduced admission prices when the schools are on holiday there would be significantly increased demand?
Why were tickets not available in advance for areas not behind a goal?
Do Everton not realise most supporters have to work, and are unable to arrive hours before the kick-off?
Or don't they care?
So, over 2000 supporters locked out, some never to return no doubt. But Everton can afford to turn away and alienate supporters can't they, they don't need the money do they?
A final point - I did manage to get in last night, at 10 to 8. As the kick-off was delayed we attempted to get a beer. But 20 minutes before kick-off beer was no longer on sale. And we are sponsored by a beer company!

Lock Out (again)

I don't know how many were locked out against Preston, but I would put the figure in thousands. The gates just closed at 8ish, well before the players came out. Please can we have some organisation at Goodison. "Access all areas ?". Paul B W. (28/10/04)

Dixie in Ireland

When Dixie Dean retired from English football he went to Ireland and played for Sligo rovers. That was, as I remember in the late 1930s. He helped Sligo to get to the final of the Irish F.A cup. At the time there was a current movie with Gary Cooper called "Mr Deeds comes to Town". Anyway Sligo Rovers had a rather meaningless fixture to play Limerick A F C in the Irish league and such was the magic of Dixie Dean's name that there were cars going around the town with adds such as "Mr dean comes to town". The ground was packed and as a youth of 17 I was there to see the legendary Dean. Unfortunately, Sligo sent a second team to Limerick and I never got the chance to see him. After all these years I regret this so much. Thank you for your informative articles about Dean particularly and Everton. To think this young man Wayne Rooney wished to leave Everton and go elsewhere!!! Ah well time moves on and football is more now, a matter of finance and loyalty doesn't count for much Sincerely,
Paddy Glynn. (25/10/04)

Luton Toffee

What a site! Loads of stuff for Everton fans...brilliant... Have you ever looked on teletext Channel3 508? There is always bullshit of this description on it...shock transfer phone this number 0908--------- £1.50min signing immanent what a coup 0908--------- £1.50min playmaker signs 0908--------- £1.50min and so on.. are these companies aloud to mislead fans if they were to phone up? Cos I'd be pissed off to hear " Our reliable source in Russia has heard of talks between of top European playmaker signing for the blues." what a load of bull every few days there is something new...

Anyway enough of that.. I live in luton and am 27. I have supported Everton since I was 4. I`ve been to see them only on five ocassions. 3 time at Goodison the other two kennelworth road. I have blue blood running through my veins. Most of the twats round here are luton, man u , worst of all liverpool arsenal...I Played for the junior hatters with my Everton top underneth my luton shirt(No JOKE) at goodison and have a signed white t shirt from the lads(my pride and joy)... Keep up the good work on the site brilliant. Come on you Toffees! Thanks. Barrie. (25/10/04)

Super Kev

Interesting to read about Super Kev's super attitude and professionalism. Especially as the latest article is posted above his last words of warning "relegation dog fight" and "settle for fourth from bottom" No doubt Kev will be happy to continue with his support from his current position until his contract runs out. We may be "in for a long hard season" but Christ we're enjoying it. Pete C. (25/10/04)

In response...

...to recent messages:
* Plymouth Pete: it was ever like this. The "Petulant Brat" line is from the same logic that tells us that "an alcoholic is someone you don't like who drinks as much as you".
* Rick, get real! In the Everton Pantheon there is Dean, Ball, and Southall; then the merely great, then the good and so on. Unfortunately there are far too many at the bottom of the pyramid (Angell, Belfitt, Bernie Wright)

Tony Hibbert

By rating Hibbert MOM, I feel that he really has flown over the cuckoo’s nest. On the plus side Hibbert stuck to his task, however everytime Hukeslby got him one on one he either did him (Hibbert) or sent over decent centre. By standing off him so far it was clear that he was shit scared. It was only the profligacy of the other Norwich forwards, bad luck and poor delivery that saved Everton.

MOM was Weir, Graveson, or in fact anyone bar Hibbert. The central defensive positions are fairly well covered; it is in the full back positions that we lack presence. Mike weir. (25/10/04)

Dixie Dean

How can anyone not have the Legend that is Dixie Dean in the side? 60 goals in a season (1928 ) it might have been before my time - the 70s onward, but the record speaks for itself. Steve Holmes. (25/10/04)

Tickets for Cardiff

If you know anyone that has any spares for the two cup finals that we are going to get to this season, could you call or email me. Also if you know anyone that's traveling to the European cup final in may 2006, I have 3 seats in mini bus I have booked. Happy days. I love you Everton. S.G.Whelan. (22/10/04)

King Davie

Never will we be in the state of purgatory again, fuck me didn't that feeling get lost once before. Please we don't need the stress. I nominate Davie Moyes as a manager for ten years. All in favour say 'aye'. My health will definitely improve. No doubt all Evertonians will benefit. Long live the new king of Moyesyside. COYB. John Lea. (22/10/04)

The Pie Eater

How come that when he had our beloved blue shirt on he was a "petulant brat", but now he's got a red one on he's "only young and has a lot to learn". Oh, if only i could be a fickle Manc ! True blue. Plymouth Pete. (22/10/04)

Many Thanks

Many thanks for the web site address for the Australian branch of an Everton supporters club. Desperate to meet like minded individuals who are as depressed as me on a Saturday knowing they cannot be at the game supporting our great team. They are the only thing that I am missing!
Regarding Ian McDonalds wonderful piece about Bernard Murphy, I am not ashamed to say I had more than an odd tear in my eye, touching to the point and reassuring that in an increasingly cynical world there are so many genuine people out there. All the very best for his family. I have said it before and I will say it again, wonderful site, keep up the great work and here's to a great season. Forever Blue. (22/10/04)

Bernard Murphy

Will you tell Ian McDonald to put a health warning on any more articles he writes like the Bernard Murphy tribute please? Sat in work trying not to cry!!! nice one.... Paul Jones. (22/10/04)

Yifter Report

I was so pleased to read this report, it shows just what Evertonians are about. Just a little amendement is required though. It was the Gardeners arms official supporters club who organised the season ticket for young john. we felt we wanted to mark Bernard's passing with a suitable tribute, and when I heard he worked overtime to ensure that young John got his season ticket for anfield, I thought it would be fitting if this seasons was bought by our club. We had no problems with the raffle, in fact it was easy to sell the tickets, because of the cause. When I handed the money to Brenda and Mo in the box office they kindly supplied me with a receipt made out to the gardeners arms. We started our club there with the blessing of the manager, but when he was replaced by a kopite it was difficult (am i diplomatic or what) so we moved on to Crofts and kept the name for the purchasing of tickets more than anything else. I think when Yifter's family seen the receipt they must of thought the regulars in the pub were responsible, which I can understand. I am so glad this was mentioned in Ian Mac's report as I can now show all the members. regards Freddie Highcock of the gardeners arms supporters club. (soon to be re-named and running out of the upstairs room in crofts) (22/10/04)

Lineker

Regarding Lineker, who you say is "over-rated". Should the second best English goalscorer of all-time (by one goal) and Everton's last "prolific" marksman (do you seriously think we - or any other team to be fair - are ever going
to have a 40 goal-a-season player ever again?) NOT be "rated" quite highly?

Everybody has their opinion of their favourites and maybe Lineker as an Everton player did not establish enough to make such a side (not mine either - nowhere near) but credit where credit is due I think. Neil Lunt. (18/10/04)

Greatest Team

I've just read Rick's email about his greatest Everton side over the last 50 years, and although I don't agree with one or two positions, it is some team. But when he says that Ball was one of the most overrated players, I'm assuming he means Michael Ball (or even Bobby Ball). Rick, you can't mean Alan Ball, one of the greatest midfield players of the last 50 years! This man was the greatest midfielder of my generation, and along with the incomparable Bobby Moore, was a great hero to me. Even now, if I came home from work and found Bally in bed with the wife I'd pull the covers over him to make sure he didn't get cold.

I imagine that Rick is certainly going to spark some debate with his selections, but it's a great game to play because we've so many legends to choose from and we've probably all spent many happy hours in the pub picking our best side. Funny, but nobody ever includes Rod Belfitt.

Anyway, great side Rick, and the classiest back 4 that any club could boast - but watch out for Bally fans coming after you with white boots! Kevin Latham. (18/10/04)

That Good Saturday Night Feeling

The rezzies beat the shite 1-0.
The gals beat the shite 5-1.
Were looking down the table at "once a gobshite always a gobshite, greedy bastard, traitor, scum bag, shrek.
David Moyes is a genius, and he's making every blue feel 10 ft tall.
I'm proud of every player (even sandro). Keep up the good work lads.
Now were did i put my passport??????/ Duncan's Pigeon. (16/10/04)

The Worst

What about Tiger McLaughlin and Joe Harper? Jem Fitzsimons. (16/10/04)

Out with the old In with the new

The position of players in the Moyes revolution, goes without saying are now in a position of change. We will now see the end of the old brigade. The Moyes team of choice not having to play the people left from the last managers fukk ups. Sorry it's the dawn of a new day, lets get it on. Out with the old in with the new. It's a fuccin fact of life. The end is nigh. If you do not belief me the business will prove the hard facts of life. You will not be offered a contract. Playing for Everton is a privilege. The people have spoken, good luck. and thank you. COYB. John Lea. (16/10/04)

Z-Cars

Can you tell me when the theme from Z-cars was first played for the introduction of the players at Goodison, and why the playing of this particular tune came about. Regards Geoff Orton. (16/10/04)
