Is Beattie value for money?

TOTAL LEAGUE GOALS SCORED BY TOP PREMIERSHIP STRIKERS IN THE LAST THREE SEASONS: (up to the end of the 2003-04 season)

78 Henry (cost £10.5m)
68 Van Noodles (£19m)
62 Shearer (£15m)
54 Owen (sold to Real Madrid for £8m near the end of his Shite contract)
49 BEATTIE (£6m)
47 Hasselbaink (free, but once cost Chelsea £15m and Atlético Madrid £12m. Getting on a bit anyway)
42 Viduka (£4.5m, Leeds spent £6m on him)
35 Anelka (£13m, not to mention the £23m that Real paid Arsenal for the miserable twat)
33 Saha (£12.8m)
31 Robbie Keane (£7m. Once went to Leeds for £12m, Inter for £13m and Coventry for £6m!!!)
31 Andy Cole (free, but Radzinski's role model previously cost ManUre and Blackburn a total of £14m)
30 Gudjohnsen (£5m)
30 Phillips (£3.3m)
29 Angel (£9.5m)
28 Forssell (free)
26 Fowler (£6m. Leeds paid £11m for him. Ridsdale and O'Leary really ought to be ashamed of themselves)
25 Radzinski (£1.8m, we paid £4.5m for him)

And finally....

3 Diouf. In fairness to the expectorating shithouse, that is only over two full seasons but he is listed here because a) the Shite paid £10m for him, which is about as funny as comedy gets, and b) Marcus Bent has scored 5 so far in half a season, and he cost £450,000.

So Beattie looks like value for money to me, even allowing for the inflated prices a few years ago (Angel, £9.5m. Hilarious.) My theory is that we have forgotten what it's like to spend proper money on a player, and are therefore naturally inclined to view the Beattie purchase as a dangerous extravagance. We also don't know how much is left in the pot, and we all want 2 or 3 more January signings to reinforce the squad. Nevertheless, based on what you see above and considering that he's scored those 49 goals in a side that could be described as moderate at best, it looks like a sound deal. It also sends a message out to other potential signings (and, hopefully, to Tommy Grav) that we mean business.

Incidentally the other one who stood out was Moyesy's apparent second choice Yakubu, 24 goals in a season and a half for Portsmouth, 8 more this season, dead quick and strong (too strong for Yobo anyway) and he's only just turned 22. If only the mythical Fortress Sports Fund money would magically materialise, eh? Yer never know. Neil, Milton Keynes. (11/01/05)

Super Kev

It looks as though Super Kev is on his way out of Everton. I for one would like to wish him good luck in the future, as i think he has been great for the blues. Yes in recent months he has not been in the team and when he has he has looked a little out of his depth, but I was at Goodison on Tuesday night and I was disappointed to hear the abuse that some forgetful Toffees threw at him. He was our saviour a few seasons ago and most of us will not forget that, I,m sure. Good Luck Kev. Great site. Andrew Oxton. (11/01/05)

What Were You Like At 18?

I would like to congratulate Dobbo on an excellent piece; I was so impressed with his sentiments that I read it twice. I hope every Evertonian reads this and gives Rooney a great reception when we play ManUre. As Dobbo says, remember what you were like at 18 years of age, then add to that the devils (Red by all accounts), that would have been on his shoulder day in day out. He is a young man who is not the sharpest tool in the box, who has been manipulated by well educated greedy bastards for their own personal gain. Kevin Cliffe. (11/01/05)

Feed a Scouser

Sorry mate, but I can't agree with a word you're saying, Dobbo. I hate that little fat fucker, and I can't wait for him to set foot on the sacred turf at Goodison. He's a greedy little twat, and he deserves the riotous response he's going to get, if he's allowed to play, on the 20th April. He's not a Blue, and he never can be!! I agree that he doesn't look happy, but that's probably because he's not allowed to meet Auld Slapper any more.

You mentioned about him being unintelligent...talk about an understatement! He signed a deal with "that paper"...that's got nothing to do with
intelligence, as any scouser will tell you. That was purely unforgivable.
He broke my heart, my daughters heart, my fathers heart, and my brothers heart. Sorry mate - NO CAN DO!

We don't need the Shrek Boy, we've got a loyal squad. I heard the mancs singing, against the Red shite, they sang to the tune of Kop aid... "Feed a scouser, let them know it's Christmas time..." While Judas was on the pitch!!! There's loyalty for yer!

We've got the Mersey Beatt, and The Moyes Peoples Revolution. We can take anyone on, and we WILL be playing in Europe next year. Will Judas?? Who gives a fuck!! Sweden_Blue. (11/01/05)

Buying Tickets

I am an Everton fan from Portsmouth. I have a Danish girlfriend who for Xmas wanted to buy me a couple of tickets for a home game as I have never been to Goodison but unfortunately despite e-mailing the box office on no less than three separate occasions has been unable to even get a reply !! Now I know this may well be a one off situation but I have heard various other similar stories on other sites and I thought that Wyness was supposed to be sorting this sort of thing out.

I fail to see how he will increase our turnover to 70 million a year if fans can't buy tickets or, even more worryingly, not even get a reply. I know this is not your area as such but I am writing to you for advice as I have read your site for years and you are all obviously well in the know. If your curious as to why a lad from Pompey came to support Everton its because I grew up in Germany "Auf Wiedersehn Pet" style as my dad was a carpenter and all his mates were Blues from Liverpool so my little brother and I were kind of indoctrinated into it and boy am I glad they weren't Redshites !

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Gaz Carter. (11/01/05)

The New Kid on the Block

I am worried about where he's going to play Beattie. Bent has been great. Are we goin back to 442? I hope so. We can't go on playing the format we have or will we? John Tierney. (11/01/05)

Destiny's Child

Anyone else think the start of the new destiny's child song starts off sounding like the start of our fantastic Z Cars Tune???? Richard Neil Jones. (11/01/05)

Joe 90

Maybe the Peter Reid thing would not work. I don't personally agree with it either. But the thing is, Joe 90 produces the most intelligent emails on here. So much so, its on the main page every time he sends one! Keep em comin Joe!

On another matter, I pray we sign Jermaine Pennant (on the cheap, contract up in May) this month, we need midfield reinforcements badly. If any one of Cars, Leon, Timmy, Tommy or Killa gets injured, we don't have the replacements. I think that would be more of a priority than another striker. Bent has been magnificent and sometimes all that hard work goes unnoticed. Another one has to be a defensive midfielder that can play football. When Cars is absent, there is nobody really effective enough to sit infront of the back four and let Timmy and Tommy play. COYB. John Reece. (11/01/05)

Big time Jamie got da blues

I thought £4.5m was about right 4 Beattie. But hey....what do I know? His goalscoring ability is not in question. If he is a confidence kind of player, then he certainly can count on the support from both manager and fans (ask Jamie Mac).

However he will do well to remember that his main, first and only priority to score goals (shedloads of 'em) 4 EFC and bring this club what it has been missing for almost 2 decades – a prolific goalscorer. His England recall comes a very poor second. England managers have traditionally sh*t on this club in the recent past telling our playas they needed to be playin’ 4 a bigga club Remember Kevin ‘Da Quitter’ Keegan with Judas Barmby or more recently Sven ‘Shagga’ Eriksson with Shrek and the FA living up to its name- doing FA?

Well James, look around you cos you are now playing for a big club. No mo’ are we some kinda stepping stone for players with a warped sense of their own self importance. Jus’ remember an England recall doesn't mean shyte @ Goodison if you do not do the biz 4 us. Don’t take the piss and we’ll both be fine. Looking 4ward to you debut appearance and goal on Saturday against Plymouth. No pressure. Abi aka blakandblu. (08/01/05)

The Spellow Aleouse

Just to let you know. Read your review of The Spellow alehouse. The manager was my brother Nick Cochrane who, as you mention, is a red shite. What you don't know is that he used to be a Blue, but turned coated when he was about 12. He denies it of course but I know because I was there! You should see his face when I remind of this in front of his red shite mates - priceless! Best regards, Kevin Cochrane. (08/01/05)

Tommy G

I Hope that all this controversy that Tommy Gravesen's agent is causing doesn't effect morale for the remainder of the season. What ever happens, Tommy Gravesen has been at Everton now for 5 years in July, which is loyal by today's players standards, so i would begrudge him if he left. But what i fear is that even if we do get to Europe, will Gravesen sign a long deal? or just ask for a 1 year deal? I fear it will be the latter.

Great to see Beattie signing, he scores some great goals as well as alot of 'strikers goals'. I am concerned about our goalkeeping situation though, why doesn't Moyes move for Cudicini? I don't think he has a big contract at Chelsea, and I'm not comfortable with Richard Wright as cover for big Nige. I think Cudicinui would rather come and play for Everton than Fulham.

Finally all the everton sites gave man of the match v pompey to either Gravesen or Hibbert. In my opinion, the difference that stubbs made compared to the Tottenham game was there for all to see. Anyway I ain't booking no holidays this summer, saving me money for various
short trips around the continent next season instead!! James Marshall. (08/01/05)

It Was Me

Daily Post Thursday 6th Jan'05 interview by Andy Hunter with James Beattie. James quotes " A lady turned up at the training ground while I was having my medical with 'Beattie' on her shirt." This was me on Monday afternoon a full 24hrs before James was confirmed our record signing. James actually signed my shirt for me and I believe it was the only shirt around at this time. Anne Porter. Tommy Gravesen News From Madrid

God I hate being the bearer of potentially bad tidings but here goes. According to the teletext service of the local tv station here in madrid, arrigo sacchi (real madrid's new director of football/hanger-on/fashion victim/football celebrity/etc) has proposed the signing of Tommy NOW, without waiting for the summer when he'll be out of contract. It also says that Tommy's agent (never trust an ex man ure player) has been in contact with the club, although not officially (do we really care if it's official or not? I don't think so). I have to say that Tommy is probably exactly what they need (Beckham is quite useless in central midfield, and no one else in the team knows how to tackle), but I also have this feeling that i'm going to be violently sick too.

Keep up the good work fella's, Goodison Park seems a lot closer because of what you do. All the best, c'mon the blues. And as we all know, in spanish, la mierda = the shite. Paul Whelan. (08/01/05)

Tsunami

I was at the Charlton game and I'm not writing in to complain about Ferguson elbowing Hriedarsson, even though it was so counterproductive I actually refused to believe he'd done it until I saw it again at the end of the game. I'm not even writing in to whinge about the fact that he's on 30,000 a week, as that'll only last until the end of the season now anyway. But if he's being fined 60,000, then given the timing and the fact that our Chang Beer sponsorship gives us a close (ish) link to Thailand, I'm wondering if the money's going to be sent to the tsunami appeal. Maybe I'm being all dewy-eyed and liberal about all this, but I just thought it might be a good thing to do... Rory O'Keeffe. (08/01/05)

Beattie

I don't think some of you have ya heads screwed on right. Beattie a couple of seasons ago scored 23 goals in the Prem, the 2nd highest in the Prem and by far the highest scoring British player. This season before his £6 million move to the Toffees he had had 11 games and scored 4, and Bent has played great this season and scored 5 in 20 odd games. He may not be the quickest but he makes up for it in abundance with a natural eye for goal, big presence and he is a northern lad and he will run his heart out for the club. Jay. (08/01/05)

James Beattie - Great Signing

A very good & important signing for everton football club and with the best manager in the england this club is going into europe next season. tara for now. blue 41. (08/01/05)

No Confidence in Wright

What I have been afraid of all season happened! - Nigel got injured and Dicky Wright came in. Richard Wright is without doubt one of the worst goalkeepers to play for Everton - and I used to watch Albert Dunlop! He has no presence in the area, and if he makes a save, he usually knocks it out to an oncoming forward who taps it in. Lousy making challenges in the air, and when he tries to stop a shot heading for a top corner, he dives too low. A classic example was against Spurs.

He was diving virtually horizontally while the ball was heading for the top corner. He was nowhere near it. Just watch how many goals we concede while he is playing. He instills no confidence in the defence and he is clearly a liability. I would give Turner a chance - immediately! - before we see yet another inadequate goalkeeping display.
Murf of Bootle. (08/01/05)

The Story So Far

Being laid up after surgery I've had plenty of time to read a lot of opinions and comments from fans and media alike on how well we have done so far this season. I must admit that after the Arsenal game I thought we were in for an awful season and I almost looked at the situation in Leeds sympathetically, thinking we're next. How wrong I was, how wrong everyone was! Away wins galore, solid home form, clean sheets, a settled side, 4-5-1, 1-0s, constant top four position and then money to spend in January! O.K. we've had two defeats on the bounce, but come on! We're fourth going into the new year, and that was the first time this season that we've lost two in a row!

I was disappointed to read some comments about Pistone, Yobo and a few others being lazy. I watched the Tottenham game, and I admit I was very disappointed, I expected us to get something out of the game, I almost expect something from every game. Expectation of better things is something this team has given us this season and it feels good. However Spurs tore us apart, Kanoute and Keane were very impressive and our midfield, for once this term, never really got going. Davey and Joey didn't play their best and Wright was a bit suspect. To be honest I think Davey is coming to the end of his top flight playing days, to many times he throws out an arm or tries to wrestle an opponent who has beaten him for speed or pace. However he has been awesome this season, like the rest of the guys who played at White Hart Lane. We looked tired, maybe a bit jaded from the energy expended in getting us this far. So we got a hiding by Spurs, and we lost to Charlton, if that's our blip for the season, then so what? Just so long as we beat Portsmouth to stay 6 points ahead of the shite, and maybe go on another unbeaten run.

What about James Beattie? Well, he's almost here, bar any last minute hitches. Anyone with any doubts need only look to his goal scoring record in recent seasons, his age, ability, reasonable price, the fact he picked us over a team that has been better placed than us more so in recent times and that he's better than what we have at the club. I was worried when I read that he was out on the piss a bit to often and that maybe he wasn't what we needed right now. Then I thought about it, he can score with either foot, he's good in the air, mobile, strong and he can lead the line. Mosey has been shrewd in the transfer market, where would we be without Marcus and Tiny this season, and all for £2.45m or so. If Mosey is willing to part with £6.5m for Beattie then I'll trust his judgement.

The only disappointment is the situation with the Grav. What does he want to do? Should we sell him now for a few million rather than keeping him, maybe only half hearted to our cause, until the end of the season and let him go for nothing? He has been brilliant this season, and you couldn't blame him for wanting to go to AC Milan or Madrid, or maybe you could? Here though he's the main man, probably our player of the season, a move to a big club and he's just another midfielder amongst big names, here he's the big fish. Reading the latest from bluekipper I'm not 100% optimistic about him staying, but you never know. Just so long as he doesn't go to United!!!!!

I think Joe's idea of a 'Football Business Manager' is good, and as he said, the more Mosey is with the team in a coaching capacity the better. I don't know about Peter Reid though. Great player, but questionable in management. Maybe a Frank Arnesen type instead? He seems to be well respected throughout Europe and quite influential. It'll probably never happen anyway, though well thought out.

Bottom line, we haven't won/achieved anything yet, apart for some admiration, and if we fall on our arse then it'll be the old 'I told you so' shite. So keep it up!!! I've read about us scraping results, and scraping draws. What's wrong with that? Its better than having our pants pulled down, and winning one away match a season. We finished 4th bottom last year, tanked by City 5-0 on the last day, a team we beat home and away this year. Progress? I think so. Lets keep it going!!! Shep

'Once A Blue Always A Blue'

It is time to open our eyes and realise that 'Our Wayne' is still 'Our Wayne'. This is a boy who has idolised Everton since the day he was born.
A club that looked after him since he was 8 years of age and even bought his school uniforms. 'Once a blue always a blue' - that is what he wore and he believed it with all his heart. Then he goes to Euro 2004. Beckham, the Neville ugly brothers and every other member of the squad whispering in his ear that he needs to leave Everton. And let's face it most of them are ill-educated themselves. Add into that the England manager himself telling him to move and every so called TV expert. Everton flew out knowing what was going to happen but could not get close enough to stop it. Come on, 'Our Wayne' needs to be told every day, how and when to tie his shoelaces so how is he going to cope with making such an immense decision on his own.

Then we have Collen. What can you say about this girl ? Apart from that Wayne is really under her thumb - say no more in fact. And then to top it all off Paul Stretford - the best agent around proved by the way he manipulated Wayne for his own greed and showed no morals whatsoever - exactly the criteria required to be a football agent. This man cocooned Wayne for 2 months whispering in his ear all the time. Convincing Wayne it was the best move for Wayne's benefit obviously not Stretford's and the money he was going to make. Lump in Alex Ferguson and Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd and you have an 18 year old, unintelligent, inner city boy who did not stand a chance.

To a club who he grew up knowing was our bitterest rival which shows how effective the manipulation was and how ruthless Stretford is. Wayne is quoted as saying David Moyes was too strict !!! Welcome Wayne to your new world where your new manager is a psychotic Scotsman - you did not know the meaning of the word strict. And that is now where he finds himself. In a world of pain. Manipulated by all around him for their own ends, with not a thought for Wayne's own inner personal happiness taken into account, by ruthless intelligent people which includes Colleen.
The whole thing stinks to high heaven with Wayne stuck in the middle. His marketing value alone was worth £28 million in one year around Europe and the world.

So where is he now his beloved - and make no mistake that Everton are still his beloved - third in the league? He has moved to a club where the egos are massive. When Van Nistelroy scores players have to let him take the crowd salutes on his own as he is the king. Watch Wayne when he plays for the Manks. Check his body language. It is obvious he is not happy. He cannot celebrate properly. He was even pulled off Van 'the cheating man' by one of them so Van could celebrate on his own. What is it like in that dressing room? A dressing room run by fear and egos?
And the Manks themselves. Yes they really want Rooney to win them trophies so we can all say that they needed a scouser to do it. Listen to the crowd when he scores. The Manks can just about sing his name twice and then it gets stuck in their throats. The Manks on every televised game would sing 'If you all hate scousers clap your hands' - every game and believe me they still want to.

Yes I was extremely disappointed and upset by Wayne's departure and the circumstances surrounding the transfer as much as every other true blue Evertonian. It was a nightmare summer. When he was proving how good he is in Euro 2004 he was an Everton player. I watched Sky sports news non stop for 3 days. I have a signed framed photo of him which I have now kept hanging but turned to the wall with 'What price loyalty?' written on the back of it. However I reached a turning point watching the England V Spain game Wednesday 17th Nov 2004. Everything about him was wrong. His unhappiness was plain and clear to see regarding his football. He threw off the black armband and what? Yes I understand that as a mark of respect it was a tad distasteful but only to non blues and those that cannot remember just how much Emlynn Hughes used to abuse Everton during Liverpool's 70's European dominance. Him and Phil Thompson, every time they were interviewed on radio or TV would always get their snide remarks in about Everton.

I lived those years in the Park End and could not tolerate either of them. I also now hear is wearing a special blue wrist band in support of anti bulleying. Wayne went from the club he loves with the love and support of half a city, to a lonely, manipulated, dominated young man in 2 months and if you look closely it is written all over his face. Does any Evertonian out there really believe that the passion Wayne feels just like the rest of us for Everton just went away? The ' Once a blue, always a blue' - the 'I want to captain Everton all the way to win trophies' - his boyhood dreams and aspiration all centred around Everton FC - a club full of people he has known since he was a small boy - a relationship with supporters that he dreamt about all his life - all of this just evaporated in 2 months and he can just switch it all off? These are deep inbred feelings and they do not just go away not matter how hard he may have tried in the first couple of months because he had to believe he had made the correct decision. Everyone around him was telling him so.

It is in him and always will be despite anything anyone around him is still saying. Just like it is in all Evertonians. But the poisoning will not stop because the people around cannot let it. Does anyone out there really believe that when Wayne is on his own, now that the novelty of all the money has worn off and it is now back to simply football that he does not have his moments when he reflects on what has happened to him and wonders whether he has done the right thing? He knows he could have been a legend for us - he will never be for the Manks and he must know it, he is a scouser and they will never accept him totally, never. He knows he could have gone all the way with Everton and become one of the true greats of world football. He knows he broke hearts all over the world and especially the younger fans. HE KNOWS THAT NOW - not then, when he was being manipulated. But what another burden at such a young at age. To know that you have made supporters of all ages, all over the world, of the club you have loved from a boy and still love, turn against you.

He is 19 and he knows this. I would find it difficult to handle and I am writing as a 40 year old. Stop spitting at him. I understand the passion and feeling and so does he without a doubt. No-one is that cold especially not Wayne. Wayne Rooney will be back as an Everton player before anyone out there realises. He is one of us and always will be. Watch him play. It is all there. Read the signs. Put yourself in his shoes at 18 years of age and remember the person you were at that age and how vulnerable you were and how easily you could be led and then add in that you are not very educated! I hope it all goes wrong at the Manks for him - sorry Wayne but that is the price you have to pay as a little of this does come down to you. But it was a mistake and let's face it, we have all made many of them. And I am sure he is now staring to realise. He can now go one of two ways.

Continue playing his football for a club he regarded as the enemy for 17.5 years of his 19 year life and try to enjoy it or grow up and become a man in charge of his own destiny and realise that there is only one club for him and one club he wants to see as one of the best in Europe - Everton - his one true love. As said no-one could have been more up-set and disappointed than myself but I would welcome him back with open arms tomorrow. Because now I do feel truly sorry for him and how the circumstances could ruin what could have been a very happy, successful career for him with Everton. Like I keep saying watch him when he plays. It is all there to be seen. £28 million - Let's get him back to where he belongs for a few million.

We are Evertonians and that means something. And we do not abandon people. He has left the fold but he will be back because Everton are his one true constant love in his young life. To finish above Man U and qualify for Europe this year would say it all. For us. re the heartache of the summer and to Wayne to open his heart, his mind and his eyes to what has happened around him and those people around him who do not care about his true happiness. Once an Evertonian always an Evertonian is for us all and that includes Wayne Rooney. You cannot surgically remove your blue soul regardless of who tries and his and ours are blue and always will be. Dobbo the blue. (08/01/05)
