Big Nige has retired and this is your chance to say thanks to the best goalie we've had since Neville Southall. Big Nige says: "The supporters have been fantastic from day one. It was a difficult situation with having not gone to the club a few years ago - it had the potential to be quite awkward. But I hoped that by trying my best and giving my best in every game I would win the fans over and, to be honest, they were fantastic from the first day and they always will be. The highlight for me was the 0-0 draw at Anfield. It was my first Merseyside derby match and we went there and I had quite a decent game. It is nice to give a performance like that to the supporters. It was important because we had not done too well against them in previous years so that was a personal high point for me." (10/06/06) * Absolutely gutted Nige wont be between the posts for us next season. The likes of Gerrard, Simonsen, Myhre and Richard Wright have all tried to replace big Nev but all failed miserably. True Nev is a hard act to follow but the biggest complement I can pay Nigel Martyn is not once while he was in goal did I think to myself "Southall would've saved that". You are a great, honest professional of which very few are left in today's game. You gave 100% in every game which is all Evertonians ask. Good luck to you and your family in the future. p.s just wish we'd signed you 10 years earlier. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum. John Byrne, Dublin. (13/06/06) * As so many of the posts have already stated, thanks a million big fella! It's only genuine people like you and Kevin Campbell that have kept the peoples club up where they belong! David Shortall. (13/06/06) * Nice one Nige for the great services you've given us over the past few years. You've saved us from many sticky situations, I'm happy that Everton now have yet another great keeper to add top the archive of legends! Thanks for everything mate. Tom Davies. (13/06/06) * All the best Nige! Had the honour of seeing you in my first ever footy game back in '89 when you played (with that 'tache!) with Bristol Rovers. Was an even bigger honor to see you playing for my beloved toffees too! You had some cracking games and deserved at least another shot between the sticks for England. All the best big man. Deian Vincent. (13/06/06) * Thanks for 2 great years Nigel if the club have any sense they will keep you on as a coach for our young and up and coming young keepers. David Summerskill. (13/06/06) * Would like to thank Nige for his time with us. He gave us something we haven't had since big Nev, and if it wasn't for Johnson he would have been our joint best blue keeper of all time. Eight years too late but better than never. Well done Nige and all the best for your future. You will be missed mate!!! Martin Brown, Carnforth. (13/06/06) * Nige What can I say? One of the oldest, but by far one of the best goalies. For the last 2 years of his career CLASS. What a keeper. Good luck 4 the future Nige from Andy Gray in Bootle. (13/06/06) * Firstly, great site, come on every day to check/confirm/explore the latest everton news/rumours! I write to pass on my thanks to two Everton greats – Duncan Ferguson and Nigel Martyn. I was 11 when Dunc signed for the Blues so he was my original childhood hero and will always hold a special place in my heart, and the hearts of most Evertonians I suspect. I met Nigel Martyn when he played for Leeds – at the time I was at University there and was working at McDonalds – Nige brought his kids in for Happy Meals, and he was proper sound! Great keeper, good luck to both of the big men for the future. Stewart Littler. (13/06/06) * Just a big thanks to Nige who has been possibly our best player for the last 2 years running. Got us to the champions league with some fine performances. Just as Moyesy said the one at the shite (the 0-0) and also last year's derby (the 1-0 one!) stick out in my mind. Thanks for inspiring me to play in goal, so be in for a 7 a side league, but after every save I manage to make the loudest "NIGE" screams can be heard. Enjoy your retirement mate, thank you so much. N. Ball. (13/06/06) * Felt like you came and have gone so quickly Nige. Struggling through with that ankle injury I've watched you hurting taking those kicks, sitting in the paddock wincing hoping it wouldn't be too much!! Thanks for all your effort big man, the best keeper since big Nev and you were finally someone who kept our defence calm in crazy situations. Hopefully staying at the club maybe to help Woodsy coaching would do good? A character like yours shouldn't be wasted. O well thanks for the times Nige. J. Murphy. (13/06/06) * Thanks mate!! In two years you did more than some tossers have done for Everton in a career. Yes Ian Wilson, Neil Mcdonald and all the other bags of shite who we've been unfortunate to witness in a blue shirt over the years. Finch and Johnson may you fester in the bowels of satan himself for cocking up the big mans transfer ten years ago!! Good luck and come back to see us anytime you like big fella!! A Parkend Blue. (13/06/06) * May we say good luck in whatever you do next big fella. You were by far the best goalie we have seen since big Nev. You will be sadly missed by us and every other Evertonian. On a serious note would it not make sense to make big Nige the goalie coach? He is by far a superb stopper and lets be honest the keepers we have brought to Goodison were meant to be the next big thing (Steve Simonsen, Paul Gerrard, Dickie Wright ) and what's happened to them, SHIT that's what and obviously we only need to look at the coach we have, Chris Woods. Come on blues make a super signing this summer. Gareth, Paul and Billy Wright. (13/06/06) * Bad news about Nigel, but I hope he gets well soon - and no-one's ever too old for a comeback! Lee Vousden. (13/06/06) * How sad it is to here that Nigel Martyn has had to retire. He is an exceptional goalie and a true professional. He will be missed by all at Everton. All the best in whatever you do Nigel. Health and happiness to you and your family. Regards. Mike eds. (13/06/06) * Big Nige was probably the best keeper we've had for a long time. He always did his best, even when the defence was a load of balls. Well in Nige, You done us proud! bgreenway. (13/06/06) * I kept tabs on you from when you were 23, and hoped from then you would sign for the blues. Eventually you did, too late, but glad to have you at the blues. Always remember us Nige, we will remember you, with the greats, you kept us up, gave us something to build on, hopefully. Jeff. (13/06/06) * Remember the derby with the shite shooting from everywhere. Big Nige stood his ground and got us a point. Always had time for the fans at the car park leaving his missus waiting to sign things. Phillip McFerran. (13/06/06) * I would like to say a big thank you for all that Nigel has done for Everton, we surely would not have got into Europe without him. He is a quality keeper and should be commended for all of his effort. Good luck Nige, you will be sadly missed. Rachael. (13/06/06) * Nigel Martyn - thanks for keeping Richard Wright out of the goal for 3 years. Thomas Gillespie. (13/06/06) * To the best English goalkeeper to grace goodison turf thanks for your professionalism at times were we needed you which led to clean sheets and man of the match awards for you. For the price we got you are definitely David moyes greatest signing ever and you always will be. Good luck in retirement. Iain Currie. (13/06/06) * What a good keeper. Wish we had him sooner. drunkinwidnes. (13/06/06) * Just want to say a big thanks to Nigel for his classic performances over the two and a half years he's been a blue, without him I doubt we would have finished fourth two seasons ago, saved us on so many occasions and when ever Wright got a chance to play he was always first to wish him well, true professional, always welcomed back to Goodison with open arms. Martin Green. (13/06/06) *
I
was saddened to hear the news that Nigel has had to retire. Considering
his age, I suppose it was coming soon anyway though, but I really hoped
that he could have had another season or two between our sticks. I really
rate him, and he should be in Germany now, standing in England's goal
mouth. (Present injury excepted of course!). * Thanks to Nigel Martin for the professional and brilliant manner that he performed to during his 100 games between the "sticks," where would we have been without him. Keith Cederholm. (10/06/06) * JUST WANT TO SAY HOW GUTTED I AM THAT NIGEL MARTYN HAS DECIDED TO RETIRE. HE HAS BEEN OUR BEST GOALIE SINCE BIG NEV AND I WAS HOPING HE WOULD BE AROUND NEXT YEAR. INSTEAD WE MIGHT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH DICKIE. LETS HOPE TIM HOWARD CAN MAKE THE No1 JESREY HIS OWN. GOOD LUCK FOR THE FUTURE NIGEL AND DUNC. Matthew Kelly. (10/06/06) * Just a couple of thank you's. My 1st goes to the great Duncan Ferguson who is an will always be my idle. I've grew up with Everton being shit with Walker, Smith and Johnson. So when you need someone at the club to look up to the big man comes into that category. My next is to big Nige. Well done in the two seasons you had with us. You really keep us out of the shit sometimes and good look to both of these true gentlemen and great players. Mark. nil satis nisi optimum. (10/06/06) * I was gutted to hear that big Nige has had to retire in such a way. Let's give him a big hand (though he's already got 2 big safe ones) and thank him for his service to the club. Moyesy says he'll be missed - but perhaps Nige could be persuaded to stay on in a coaching capacity? Any up & coming keeper would surely benefit from his advice & experience. Yeghes Da, Nige - as they say in Cornwall. Paul (Glos Blue). (10/06/06) * Big Nige was a God, and will stay in our memories forever. We'll miss u nigel!!!!! Liam Grundy. (10/06/06) * Just want to say thanks to Big Nige. Best keeper we've had since Nev. Enjoy your retirement mate. Once a Blue always a Blue. Just a pity we signed you 8 years too late. Martin Roberts.
