1985 Photos

I have just been looking at the old photos from 1985 and the 1 from old swan on top of the bus shelter shows a picture of Adam Smith's dad. He is the one standing next to Mike Hughes with the flat cap on, another big Evertonian. Eddie Courtney. (24/04/07)

Turner Not Wright For Goalkeeper

Don't even think of putting Frank Spencer in. Turner has had first team experience and the games under his belt. Wright is useless, he has no skill, no confidence and is a liability. Why pick Wright? He is out of contract and we have nothing to gain by playing him. Someone give me a reason of playing him over Turner.

Turner will champ the bit to play. He is the natural no. 2 to Howard, and as he's been making agent related whinges regarding "I want first team football" for a while, call his bluff, put him in the sticks, make him prove his worth. We know how good he is; Brian Laws and Peter Taylor are right. He is an outstanding prospect. And he's ours!!! Rich Welsh Blues. (24/04/07)

Equipped For Europe

What worries myself as an Evertonian if we do qualify for europe in 2007-8 which will be fantastic, is I have my reservations as with most of my Everton mates about how long we would survive in Europe given the quantity and quality of players available. Given the fact the amount of games we will play will obviously increase and the risk of injuries we may sustain over that period, we just haven't the man power and quality of players at Everton to step in if key players get injured. Every time we play your heart is in your mouth if one of our key players gets injured and the effect it will have on the season. It is sad with such a big club as Everton. I do get frustrated with the board at these times and full support to David Moyes for being so patient and loyal with our board. I would love to see Moyesy with money behind him. Where are these billionaire investors when you need them aye? Anything has got to be better than the businessmen content with mediocrity and premiership status and lining there own pockets we have at the helm at the moment. Fred Mathews. (24/04/07)

Play Manny Not Beattie

What the f**k is Moyesy thinking of playing Beattie? He is just a waste of time, energy and money. Get shut fast. The useless bastard and why oh why didn't he bring manny on earlier??? Dave Eadie. (24/04/07)

Moyes Stay Kenwright Go

I am am big fan of David Moyes. Kenwright is a joke. If it was not for David we would have gone down the year before last. Fourth from top now. Europe again. Kenwright talks a good talk, he is an Everton fan. So am I. He talks crap and as for James Beattie. Well if Andy Johnson is not fit I am not going to watch James Beattie up front. He is never going to be good. Not for Everton, no one. He will never be good. 30 years of watching Everton home and away, James Beattie and kenwright please go and then show Everton fans you are one of us. I don't think he will. Sorry for going on but I am fed up with it all. David Moyes thank you. Kenwright take yourself and James Beattie with you. Go go because he has fooled Everton fans for a long time, but we are not thick. A lot of Everton fans see you are in it for yourself. Go go go. Sharon Jameson. (24/04/07)

manure Fans - Never

I cannot believe bluekipper has posted an article saying we are all manure fans for the rest of the season as the trophy race hots up. As much as I love the blues I would rather manure won nothing and kept the cash. Unless they are playing the shite I would never ever want the mancs to win anything, not even the coin toss. I have not yet spoke to any Evertonian who wants to see manure win a single trophy. J. Sharples. wincanton, somerset. (24/04/07)

Cosmic Grooves

Dear Evertonians. Football is not about logic - its about passion and belief and emotions - we like certain players and others cannot see it - we have very different opinions on matches, players, tactics, referees - there are no definites - we argue, debate, agree and disagree - for me, whatever happens in the last few games, yesterdays game at West Ham underlined my belief that Moyes is not a winner - he does not know how to pick a team or employ tactics that have to win a certain game - it happens so often - we could go 3rd or 4th or get to a quarter final - we seem always to lose those games and sadly lose them rather meekly - yesterday was crying our for a creative midfield man - why was Fernandez on the bench - our last defeat was at home to Spurs and Moyes got that completely wrong - after in the pub most of us in The Dark House( a great Evertonian pub) agreed that that was hopefully the last of Beattie and that Moyes had learnt his lesson about him - no we keep playing him - why - economics and money is my guess - nothing to do with football - to play him for a summer sale price and in the meanwhile sacrifice points - lack of real ambition is the biggest threat to Everton and an acceptance of mediocrity - I am not totally against Moyes - certainly do not hate him - I just think he is a defensive manager not attacking and does not know how to change things - whenever you argue with Evertonians about Moyes they say Ok who would replace him - wowww - that's a rather negative defence, much like the manager - the problem is that Bill, certainly aware of financial restraints, will never ask Moyes to leave - I am not sure even if I want him to leave - but I want someone on board or even on Board who will push Moyes and force him to think - I am somewhat fed up with his after match comments about " I am proud of the players" or today " Beattie played well" - he didn't - he was terrible - Moyes is lucky in many ways - Mc Fadden's goal last week kept us off his back and the results went for us today - thankfully - but surely we think what could have been - think about all the dreadful throwaways this season - Man City (home and away ), Wigan, Boro (home and away) Charlton away, Villa away and certainly at home - so I will be in The Dark House early before next Saturdays game - telling myself that we will beat Man U - and believing it - why - well we are Evertonians and as I said football is not about logic - good site. Cosmic grooves. George Mc Kane. (24/04/07)

Confident Beattie

I feel that every one is against James Beattie for no reason what so ever. I think James Beattie could be the player he once was before Andy Johnson came to Everton, he just needs a few games to get his confidence back and he will be knocking in the goals, and he would be perfect with Andy Johnson up front. Hrrs. (24/04/07)

Rooney Money

Hi Guys - great site….. Could you just remind me, and others, of the terms around Wayne Rooney's move to Manchester United. Now I'd personally like to see Chelsea win everything and Rooney end up trophyless…..BUT….. Don't we get some kind of money if the Mancs win the Champs League, Premiership, FA Cup? From what I remember it could be as much as three million for all three? That's another Arteta! Can you let me know as I may have to cheer on the Mancs in their remaining games All the best. David. (24/04/07)

Money For Nothing

We're all Man Utd fans now, just for 1.6 million? You must be joking! I hope Chelsea win everything! and Moyes has his day in court and wins that too! In fact as long as we get into Europe and the Chelsea result doesn't matter I don't mind if they stuff us by a similar score to that of Arsenal in 05! I begrudge that greedy, arrogant Judas bastard everything, even that shite League cup medal! I hope they end up with fucking nothing. I hope the supporters give him hell next week, and since when do Utd dictate who we can play after signing a player on a permanent basis? They should have told Ferguson were to go, it is not as if we enforced a similar demand when they got the ugly twat! As for scores on the doors, I would be happy with a point, I think West Ham will be so up for this game that they will make it very difficult for Everton. Hopefully Stubbs and Arteta will be fit. Hopefully with all the other sides around us having tough games too it shouldn't change the outlook of the table much.
Sorry for the rant, but emotions still run high with regards to that piece of filth, even from ten thousand miles away! Regards. Gareth Fieldstead

Right of reply?

Well it would appear that I will have to consume a large lump of humble pie regarding the "Mighty" McFadden. A superb goal and a very decent performance all round. However before you get too carried away please remember all of the other times you have watched McFadden in action ? Charlton at the Valley springs to mind. So in my, desperate, defence I will have to say that were he to perform like that every other game or even one in three games I would be a happy bunny. Sadly I fear we have seen yet another one off and within a couple of weeks you will all be spitting blood again ! Fifth ! I am suffering from vertigo !! COYB. John. (21/04/07)

Opinions

Everyone has one. Mine happens to be right! Davy Moyes is the best thing to happen to this great club of ours, Thank you from a sixty yrs old

Disgrace Of The redshite

Have you noticed that the Echo and all the Red Shite loving press have played down the withdrawal of them from the Liverpool Senior Cup a trophy which has been played for many years on Merseyside. Admittedly not the greatest but what a snub to the Liverpool F. A. and once again the Spanish waiter and his Big Club Ha Ha Ha just change the rules when it suits. Next year they should be not asked to enter and if it was another club there would be a lot of fuss made. Paul. Maghull Blue. (21/04/07)

Dein For Everton

Just a thought. Now that David Dein has been sacked by the Gooners, I wonder if Uncle Bill will invite him on to Our Board. They are supposed to be great mates & I'm sure a man of Dein's experience could be invaluable to the Mighty Blues! Keith Davies, Runcorn. (21/04/07)

Let's Finish The Job

I really liked the email from Paddock boy I think Blue kipper should hire him to tell us all exactly what the challenge is because I am more guilty of celebrating before the job is done. Fact is we have to beat West Ham and Portsmouth and to finish it off get at least a draw against Man utd. I feel we also have to finish the job before we go to Chelsea as i feel we don't have a chance if they are gunning for the Title. The other point is if we get to Chelsea and we have qualified and Chelsea have to beat us to win the league wouldn't it be great fun to Rob a certain wonder boy of his first title? Revenge is sweet. Anyone got any tickets for chelsea? Sean Whelan. (18/04/07)

The Big Four Just One Single Small Step Away

I'd like to question the views of those who say we should be satisfied to be top of the second mini-league within the Premiership, or views to that effect. Those who see the Big Four as an impenetrable boys' club. I agree that those four teams are ahead of the others in wealth (only Newcastle and Spurs can come close to competing), ability to draw in world-class players, European pedigree and media coverage. What I disagree with is the belief that somehow we can't get in amongst them in the league.

Look back at the past three seasons (including this one). 04-05: Everton broke up the big four with Bolton not far behind. 05-06: a dodgy curry denies Spurs a place in the Champion's League. 06-07: Bolton blow their chance to capitalise on an Arsenal collapse, taking Everton's hopes with them.

Ok so only Everton have actually succeeded in those three years, but the stories hardly tell tales of four clubs soaring high above the rest. The Big Four are a media and financial invention and they are far from impenetrable. Whilst Spurs and Everton continually improve their squads, can anyone say Liverpool or Arsenal are really any better than they were five years ago?

Many have pointed out that we really only have ourselves to blame for not being in the top four this season. Similarly in 04-05 you may have forgotten we collapsed in the second half of the season after Gravesen left. Prior to that, we were hanging about 2nd and 3rd. Hardly the stuff of plucky losers mixing it with their betters.

I would agree that surpassing Chelsea and Man Utd are at this time out of our reach. Yet Chelsea's success is based on an unsustainable operational deficit. If Abramovich leaves they will be forced to sell and sell big. As for Liverpool and Arsenal, I don't see either of their squads as significantly in excess of either our's or Spurs'. Take Gerrard out of Liverpool and I honestly believe they are no better than us man-for-man AND we have a better 'team'. Arsenal are coached by a man who can only play one way, it's a pretty way, but it means, if you find a way round it, you can do it every time. Witness ourselves and Bolton consistently achieving good results against them.

So let's drop this mythologising of the fabled Big Four. They are there to be taken down. They deserve to be taken down because the reality is that although they have the attributes of an oligarchy in terms of media and finance, in footballing terms it's a skillful piece of misdirection to fool us into believing they're better than us.

And I mean better in a 'class' sense; somehow they're portrayed as the aristocracy to our serfs. With the help of G14 they aim to secure this class structure. Anyone fancy being terrified? Read the entirety of the G14 website. It's like a handbook to arrogance and dictatorship. Think Blair's obsessed with securing his legacy? He's got nothing on the self-appointed big boys of football. I say football, but of course there's very little football discussed on G14, it's about securing their financial position not their footballing one.

THAT, right there, is where we come in. They are not above, they are not innately superior and they have no divine right to play in the Champion's League. Anyone who buys into this belief in mini-leagues, best of the rest, drastic drops in quality outside the top four, impenetrable positions or any of that nonsense... You are simply perpetuating the myth! In footballing terms, they are one single small step ahead of us.

I firmly believe that ourselves and Spurs are highly capable of turning it into a 'big six' within a couple of seasons and Bolton are capable of coming along for the ride.

So let's hear none of this rubbish about fifth being the best we can hope for. In my view, the best we can realistically hope for from next season is to finish third and Spurs finish fourth and then get together with the Spurs fans to celebrate humiliating our arrogant neighbours by exposing the fallacy of their dominance. And you know what? IT'S POSSIBLE! John Holmes (18/04/07)

New Jersey Blues

So I live in a state called Minnesota in the U.S. (northern state in the middle of the country… cold as balls, no one plays or knows anything about football (we call it soccer) and no one knows what the hell Everton is, let alone the premiership). I am emailing you today because I think I might shoot myself out here. If I am lucky I can catch highlights from the match online. Most importantly I can’t even buy a kit! The only online shops that sell EFC jerseys are in the UK. Shipping to the U.S. is 20GBD ($40…CRAZY!) and the jerseys are 60GBD ($120). I did this once (paid $160 for a jersey) and I don’t think I can justify that again. The worst part of all of this is I found a Liverpool jersey at a local store once for $10! Do you know of any shops out here in the US that might have Toffee stuff? HELP ME OUT!!!! Michael Gale. (18/04/07)

McFadden

Came On Against Charlton - We Won!! That's why!! Dave. (18/04/07)

Goal Of The Season

What a brilliant, European spot-grabbing (fingers crossed), skilful goal that was! Goal of the season or what! Everton Geoff. (18/04/07)

The Job’s Not Done Yet!

Well done lads – another battling performance v Charlton! A UEFA Cup place is definitely within reach, but mathematically a few slip ups from the likes of Portsmouth and Reading (more so than from Bolton and Spurs) would help us in the weeks to come. I’m worried by Yahoo Sport lines such as ‘David Moyes believes Everton can start packing their bags for Europe...’ We’ve been here before!

To hang onto 7th spot, we currently need 61 points, as that is the most that Portsmouth can get and our goal difference is still likely to be superior to all our rivals. That’s 7 points out of a possible 12. However, if we can take points off Portsmouth at home, then Reading’s maximum haul of 60 points means we’ll only need 6 points. As picking up points from Man Utd at home and Chelsea away won’t be easy (although the former is slightly more of a possibility), it looks like we really need that win v Portsmouth and another at West Ham next weekend to control our own destiny and keep a top 7 finish possible. The other teams definitely have better run-ins (Portsmouth have home advantage for their trickiest two games), so let’s hope we don’t get ‘pipped at the post’ like a few seasons ago – we deserve something out of this season – COYB! Paddock Boy. (18/04/07)

McFadden

Hi all, in reply to John's e-mail on 10/04/07. What was that again mate? Youngie. (18/04/07)

MBE the unbearable lightness of.....

Is this supposed to be clever? celebrating before the end of the season - one which has witnessed some of the most appalling football in everton's history? one in which the whole future of the club is up for grabs by none other than tesco? mindbogglingly dumb! P. Stewart. (18/04/07)

Get Behind The Boys

As Evertonians, before we criticise the likes of Moyes, Kenwright etc we should take a breath and remember what we were all watching 10-15 years ago. This is an exciting time for the blues and we are proving that with limited resources we can compete. Obviously we have issues with some of the squad, occasional baffling tactics and the fact that the shite are moving right next door, but let's get behind the boys and get us back where we truly belong.COYB!! Ade in Cheshire. (18/04/07)

Where's Manny?

Hi there, True Blue living in Devon here.....Is there not some speculation regarding Manuel Fernandes? He returned from international duty with a "slight thigh strain", it was thought he may be ok for the Fulham game, but no........it was thought he may be ok for the Bolton game, but no........There has been no mention of his being ready for the Charlton game, should we smell a whiff of " what we have seen of him,is all we are going to see of Manny" ? Yours in hope, Don Maddocks. (18/04/07)

We Shall Not Be Moved

I agree with Clive Edwards - We shall not be moved was our song. It actually went like this:

Onward Evertonians
Onward for to see
See the Royal Twin Towers
Our team at Wembley
See the royal blue jerseys
As graceful as can be
Forging on to victory
And fighting constantly
Onward Evertonians
Don’t let your pride be moved
Remember your song for Wembley
is WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED!.......

Yosser. (18/04/07)

Get Yer Shirt On Us!

This whole thing is daft! You’ve all got internet access, the club shop has an ecommerce section, get your shirts direct, support the club. Why give a percentage to some scabby bunch of rugger boys. Now let’s stuff Charlton and the rest of the monkeys coming up, have a say in the title run-in and finish 4th! COYB. Kit. (18/04/07)
