Sell To Buy

Our much anticipated season with the best squad we have had for many a year is now coming to a close. We went out of both Cups early, and despite our customary good run at the end of the season, it looks like seventh is all we are going to muster.

Normally we would qualify for Europe with seventh, but thanks to the mighty Birmingham and Stoke getting to our two domestic Cup Finals, another season without trips abroad awaits us.

Our big players have not done it this season. Mikky and Tiny especially have been off the boil, our World Cup finalist Johnny Heitinga has been a major disappointment. No front man to speak of, Beckford in fairness has done OK in his first season in the top flight, but apart from a month of quality from Louis, our front line has been nothing to write home about.

Our plus points have obviously been Leighton, Seamus and Sylvian, and our marketable assets are most definitely Rodwell and Felliani.

Now I have read a lot of posts on who goes, who stays this summer, but I am not getting into individuals, more a case of how we raise monies to replace some of our ageing stars in our set up.

Mikky is now coming up to his 30th birthday, Tiny is 33 this year and Phil Neville is in his 34th year. All great servants and with over 650 matches for the Blues, they will all go down in Everton folklore. Add to this Sylvian Distin who has been superb for us this season also at pensionable age, and Moyesy does have a problem.

We can cash in quickly on Yakubu, James Vaughan and Joey Yobo. Jan Mucha looks like adding another £1m to the pot, so we may have £10m plus with those four players. We will undoubtedly sell one of our big names for silly money, so Moyesy may have £30m plus to weigh out on hopefully a front man, midfielder and defender.

For the Blues to move forward Moyesy has to sell to buy. Yes we can sell the ones who are out on loan at present, but for me one of the big guns has to go to move the Blues forward next season.

Why sell? Why is it fans are talking like their playing champ manager and wheeling an dealing is great? why not all burn our Everton shirts and support LEEDS or YORK? I'm sick of clubs taking our younger players. Its getting to the point were there is no point. People saying sell Rodwell and buy players we don't even know will work in the team. Milner, Donavon? Good players but they wont take Everton forward. VAN PERSIE cost 2 mill, Solskjaer 1 mill. Good players are out there if the club will take a gamble on buying without selling.

I agree with Mike we need to do business as soon as the last ball is kicked,so we can crack on with pre-season and a fresh squad, whoever they may be, with moysey still at the helm, I honestly think that rodders already has one foot inside old trafford and is expendable as long as we keep baines and Felli we will be alright

I will be happy if Rodwell left for 22.5 million then we have enough money to get Ba from West Ham, Andy King from Leicester city. But the ones we need to keep hold of is Fellaini and Baines.

Sorry Spectator, when I used the word 'if', it was in respect that it is inevitable that we do have to sell, even if reluctantly. None of us wish to lose Rodwell, Baines nor Fellani. It was not that I considered we had an option but to sell, I was just making the point that if we had to lose one of the three maybe it would be wiser to sacrifce Rodwell. I would like to add I refuse to grow up, and also believe some people need to get down from their high horse.

There's no 'if' about sell to buy. EVERY club does it because they have to. Even the Arabs at Man City have said the spree days are over. It would be a good idea for some people to grow up and understand the facts of life. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

We don't want to see anyone leave but someone's gotta go,and only moysie knows who is gonna be sacrificed for the sake of our club, hopefully whoever it's gonna be we get a decent amount and davey gets the lot to spend on new players.imwt

If we must sell I'm afraid it has to be Rodders ahead of Baines or Fella.

Think Phil in Cardiff hit the nail on the head. Keep the squad together except those out on loan and try to use that money on a Striker. Depending on who goes down I think Doyle or Rodellega are worth a shot at approx 5-7m perhaps. These should be some progress from one or two of the younger players in pre-season and Rodwell should get a change next season to step up a level.

Nobody can dictate the pace of buy and sell. It's down to the players and their agents as they get in all the bids and negotiate with every interested club. It can't be done overnight. All you can do is make an early bid and then go through the process. If a player has five bids to consider it won't happen quickly as questions go back and forth. There's only about twelve weeks in the Window so buying in say three players will take time, that's just the way it works.

For me, selling Rodwell would be just terrible. English home grown players who have been at the club all of their lives are the ones we should keep at the club as long as possible. They know about Big Dunc and they care for the club with passion (I hope). You dont always have to pass forwards to be an effective player!!!!!!

Any midfielder that can come off the pitch without a spec of dirt on him is no good! In order to go forward we need to let the weak links go, 20-25 million for Rodwell, I'd bite their hands off, all he can do is pass a ball sidewards, so what if he has had injuries, got to sell him now whilst everyone is under the impression he is good!

So we have to sell as well as buy ? That is the way for a lot of clubs in the Premier League these days not just Everton. You read in the papers of comings and GOINGS at the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham. Hopefully Moyes can do some good wheeling and dealing. Personally I would like to see him be a bit more positive in his tactics - playing a lone striker is fine in some matches but in virtually 95% of games ? Beckford could turn out to be a good signing if he is given a chance - his record may not be great in terms of goals but I think he has scored more than Defoe and nobody at Spurs seems to slag him off!! Perhaps if we tried to play him alongside another striker we would really see the benefit. As to possible targets well I rate Hitzelberger at West Ham - he has got to have one of the hardest shots from distance in the League. Holloway has unearthed some "attacking gems" from outside the Premier League. So perhaps if we "cast the net" a bit wider than usual maybe we will find some "hidden treasures". I also think we shouldn't discount the idea of loan signings - oftten Moyes has used them as a virtual trial period and some have gone on to be permanent signings e.g. Arteta and Pienaar. A good way to see if a player fits in.

This is EVERTON, we tend to forget that. Sell to buy??? What is Billy doing to our club? The only 'Big Gun' I'd sell is Rodwell. Am I the only Evertonain who doesn't rate him? £25 mil, grab their hands off. I'd love Vaughan and the Yak to come back. Sell Baines Phil? (Warrington) Lets give up now and buy Pistone.

Sell Heitinga - useless and red card liability each game. Rodwell too much hype and over rated -20 mill. Grab it. Hibbo 1 mill to a championship side! Billy back to Russia 3 mill - nice lad but what is his position? Keep Yak. He knows the back of the net. Yobo must go 2 mill. Then go and get Defoe Now! Now. You do the math. Easy.

Cambo i agree totally. Maybe be sell Baines and Rodwell to the Mancs, hopefully get £45million maybe a few of their squad players for our numbers. This would get us vertually debt free then build from there, Moyes pick some bargins up in the summer. I feel if we sell got to get rid of the debt as 40 million still wouldn't get us champs league, with the money that will be spent by the other teams this year

Completely agree that we need to sell to buy - although even if we sell £30m worth of players, I can't see Moyes getting all of that to re-invest looking at our finances on the guardian website today. I think we need to sell one of our big guns just to stay where we are in the league. Those above us look as if they're there to stay for the foreseeable future considering the amount of investment/turnover they have/generate.

I wouldnt be bothered if we sold Yak, Yobo, Vaughan, Mucha, Bily and Heitinga and possibly Rodwell aswell as he would bring in a good fee even though he hasnt had the best of seasons with us. If we could bring in £30m for them lot then i'd be happy, well i would be if Moyes spent it wisely this time!. I dont think we would get much for selling the likes of Cahill and Neville but i'd keep Cahill anyway and captain Nev can take up a coaching role sooner rather than later for me. Arteta might bring in decentish money but i'd keep him too as he's still class for me and needs better quality around him and hopefully after some wheeling and dealing this summer we will have the right quality in our team to have a good season next time round.

Think you're wishing some of our players' lives away! Cahill isn't 32 until December and Arteta only turned 29 at the end of March. Your point does stand though. Cahill's age wouldn't concern me at all but for this same injury that keeps coming back. It would be awful if he did like Duncan and kept on playing at less than 100% and made it worse. There are some players who could raise a couple of quid for. Yobo is pretty much gone, as is Yakubu. Feel sorry for James Vaughan. Still reckon he's got it in him but we can't afford to keep paying wages for someone with recurring injuries indefinitely. One of the most unlucky players I've ever known.

I agree but we also need to move Big Victor on, the lad has done nothing for us , he hits the ground if a gust of wind comes through the ground, i can’t believe that no one at the club has had a go at him to stay on his feet, he is a waste of a big lad.

I must say I agree with this entirely, aside from the fact everyone seems to think we're in dire need of a striker. Personally I'd rather we see how we do with a more positive formation and people actually wanting to pass the ball forward. All too often this season we've just been going sideways, with messrs Cahill, Arteta and Rodwell the main culprits. It's all well and good keeping the ball but what are we actually doing with it? Also, 8 defenders doesn't exactly set pulses racing.

I agree Manchester city are set to be offering a £50m bid for Rodwell and Baines. Well if I was moyes I would snap there hands off.

i agree. I heard that a £5mill was agreed if Yobo stays there. Get £1mill for young James. Get somewhere close to £6mill for the Yak. Get £7m ish for Billy and £30m for the Fell or Jack so there is a very good chance that we will have a few big names in the summer. Klose, Saviola, Defoe can leave so snap him up Niko, Seb Larson. Champions league for the blues

I don't think that we have to sell our best players to move forward. Offloading the likes of the Yak, Yobo and Heitinga could generate enough to possiblty buy a resonable stirker, or wide player. Maybe both. I think a lot of next season will depend on how well our youth team can step up to the plate. I'm hopefull the likes of Da Silva, Guaye, Forshaw, Bidwell and not forgetting Barkely can try to stake a claim at some point next season. If we did have to cash in on someone, my vote would be Rodwell as Fellaini is of real importance to us, where as we don't even know what Rodwell's best position is yet. That could be someone else's problem. Keeping Moyes is my biggest concern this summer!

Even though he's young Jack Rodwell has 'potential' to be a great player one day..However, he doesnt get forward often enough, doesnt dominate the middle of the park, and seems content passing the ball sideways.. So IMO if it were a choice between him and Felli I'd say he has to be the sacrificial lamb..

Unfortunately Cambo you may well be right. I think if the lads out on loan (Yak, Yobo an Vaughan) plus Mucha all go for a combined £10m plus and we have to lose a 'big gun' you would imagine it to be Rodders or Felli to go. Personally I'd rather keep both if possible, if one HAS to go I'd sadly let Rodders go, I think Felli is a better player and at a more advanced stage in his development, yet still so young (must only be one, maybe two years between them) If we let the afore mentioned loanees plus Mucha go and get silly money for Rodders I feel we would only need a striker and a winger with the proceeds, if we can spend £20-25m combined on a proven goalscorer and a classy, pacey winger then have maybe £10m+ to keep the banks at bay I think we will be OK. Regarding a defender I think Distin could still have 2 years at this level then either Heitinga or Duffy will slot in alongside Jags.

So again we will have to wait until we sell 5 players which will probably take us into the last week of the transfer window, so much for Moyes buying early :(

If Moyes is going to sell, he has to demand all of the incomings to be used for purchases, which is unlikely

Half of the problem this season has been the fact that none of our strikers can play as a lone forward. When Saha plays he likes to drop deep to pick up the ball which leaves no-one up front. When Becks plays he likes to play off the shoulder but we have no-one to thread the balls through. When Anichebe plays he usually plays slightly to the right which leaves no one through the middle and has no support for the knock downs. All our best performances and results this season have been when we've played 4-3-1-2
Stevo, Liverpool, 12:28 PM 19/05/2011

Agree with what you say. When Moyes arrived he said he wanted young hungry players. Those players are now beginning to age so he should think about cashing in. Distin has had a great season but I would sell on as his stock is high. Keep Hetinga so he can play centre back. All the talk about selling Rodwell should be ignored. We have been without Arteta and Cahill for much of the season, and as great as those have been for us over the years, their ages dictate that they too should be moved on for decent money. Yak, Yobo, Mucha should all be sold. Personally I'd keep Vaughan. He's had a good run of games without injury in the championship. Give him another year to prove himself.

Whoever we sell it needs to be quick, and our buys need to be quick. We cant afford to let the season start and still be messing about in the window for loan signings. We need our players in before aug
