Neville For Cahill, Why?

E-MAIL From Billy Bullens

I read a report (click here) on your website a few days ago that David Moyes said he was letting people down with the performances and he was limited with the changes he could make. Well I have to question David Moyes' changes yesterday.

It was a remarkable change he made at half time. And I wasn't the only one who thought so. Most people around where I was sitting couldn't believe that Phil Neville was the man to replace Tim Cahill and reading most of the people making comments on the site had the same feeling.

One fella close to me mentioned that Phil replaced Tim to be the Captain on the pitch. I'm not too sure about that one.

For fifteen minutes we had our best midfield player in Fellaini pushed up front. It is clear the big man is suited better in the middle of the park. So in effect the sub was Phil Neville for Fellaini in the midfield.

It seems to me that David Moyes against the lesser teams wants to keep it tight and then go for it in the last third of the game. Once Jelavic came on after the hour we played a more positive game.

The point my rant is making is Moyesy wasn't limited with the changes he could have made. Drenthe, Gueye, Jelavic and Anichebe were all available and would have been more positive than Phil Neville. Don't forget we were playing the team rooted to the bottom of the table. I think that substitution gave Wigan a lift they didn't deserve.

I know the fans haven't got all the information on why things happen but wouldn't it be refreshing for the fans to receive an explanation of why things happen they don't understand.

I think he should have played Jelavic and Straq up front from the start. Drenth and Pienaar out wide and Fellini and Gibson in the middle. In defence Baines, Distin, Heitinga and Hibbert. Neville, Cahill and Donavon needed a rest, They have played loads of football recently and they are all getting on in years.

I'll take David Moyes's decision over any number of Billy Bullens any day of the week and a thousand times on Saturday.

Regarding Phil Neville, why was he not playing from the start? He wasn't 10 out of 10 against City but he did a decent job, we never conceded, and he gelled with Landon Donovan up that side. Tony Hibbert was great also but he was centre half. Neville does make mistakes but so does everyone, but he has more pluses than negatives.

There are no doubt a lot of Everton fans, like myself, who are not 100% sure about Jelavic having not seen a lot of him and the usual worry of "can a Scottish league player adapt to be a Premier League success?" Many people say the Scottish league is only equal to the Championship here...This match was an ideal one for him to start alongside Straq, against Championship level opponents who are scrapping for their lives but week in, week out you see their defenders making absolutely ridiculous mistakes that would look out of place and poor in most Sunday league teams! Why did we not go for it? All out Attack? Could even have given Drenthe a go in a Chelsea/Arsenal style 3 up top maybe? (Although probably neither Straq and Jelly are suited to pulling wide, but if Jelly can strike a good free-kick as is rumoured and has a fair share of assists, I suspect he can cross a ball pretty well too). It is one thing to not start overly positive, but then to make such a negative change just keeps my feelings going downhill about Moyes and his ability to move us forward. If you look at our 4-5-1 formations, they get more and more negative every week that defensive players are available. Back 4 (Baines, Jag, Distin, Hibbo) allows him to then go Neville, Heitinga (technically defenders) and Fellaini (wants to play as a DM) with possibly one central style player and Cahill supporting our 1 striker. Gibson is not an out and out attacking midfield type of player and likes to sit back more and spray passes, so we are left with nothing other than possible width in Donovan (short-term) and Pienaar (longer but still short-term) while Drenthe isn't getting a chance despite seeming our biggest threat most of the time. We saw what happened once Victor came on for Hibbo, we had 2 strikers and caused them trouble...but that was too little too late! There is no reason we can't be a team to win 4/5-0 against poor teams like Wigan Atheltic...other than Moyes and his negativity that is! ...Just show some ambition please Davey! COYB!

Perfect chance to play Drenthe in the free role.

Regardless of how he plays, by his own admition not the greatest crosser of the ball. But what he does bring is a big voice and a never say die attitude. Only person who tells it like it is.

I have to agree, i know Moyes has been operating under difficult contraints, but even when he has the resources he just wont go for it, remember all those possible wins that were turned into draws season before last, nothing has changed. Negative boring football, i feel so sorry for the loyal season ticket holders who faithfully turn up each week to see dross like this, nothing will change while Moyes is in charge, i cant give him any benefit of the doubt anymore, its been going on too long, however to his credit he is a dignified and honeral man and obviously well respected in the game, but alas never a braveheart who will go out in a blaze of glory.

I couldn't agree more, i thought that decision was a shocker. Moyes' CONSTANT defensive tactics are etting on my nerves. he complains about us not creating enough chances yet he refuses to play attacking players. I honestly think that we will loose Drenthe because he is so direct in attack. Moyes doesn't like any player who cant defend and I think he will not be offered a contract at the end of the season, leaving harry redknap or kenny daglish snap him up for nothing. That will be a real shame!

I thought Cahill took a knock in the first half, but regardless; I don't recall too many games where a Cahill captained Everton showed any energy or drive. He just doesn't play the same as captain.

It easy to explain, Moyes's will always want to ensure that he doesn't give a goal away no matter who we are playing , be it Wigan , Tamworth . He cannot take a chance, and try to expand a game, go for it - its always snatching a result , home or away
