I normally express my views on Everton via twitter but it is impossible to some up my feeling in 140 characters after the Semi final so here I am writing this...
 
I am not going to rant and rave about the performance, I just want to make a few points to see if people agree with me or not and also give my suggestions for what I think should happen in the future regarding our football club. Here it goes...

 
Distin
 
This time last week I voted for this man as my player of the season. If I had the vote now... it would be exactly the same! I am not going to talk about his playing ability as we have seen all season he's been a rock in the Everton defence. I want to talk about the man himself. He replies to 90% of fans on twitter whether they are negative or positive comments about himself or the team. In recent interviews we have seen he is honest and straight to the point but yesterday I saw something that not many other footballers would have done. Yes we all make mistakes and unfortunately for Sylvain his was on one of the biggest stages of all but the way he ended the game was a credit to the man himself. 99% of players would have slopped off the pitch trying to avoid everyone and everything. Sylvain - No. He shook hands with everyone of those Liverpool players and waited for all Everton players to go and applaud the fans before coming over to us himself and holding his hands up to us all. I can't think of many a player who would have done the same. After that he also took part in numerous post-match interviews so anyone who reads this (As I am posting this through twitter) just give him a tweet showing your support for him as it's the least you can do as it seems to have hit him quite hard. The man is a credit to the club.

I seriously underestimated how much we missed him. We all know he's a quality player and one of the best in the team but it really sank in how he gets the best out of the other players around him also! Baines looks twice the player when linking up with him... Jelavic gets more chances... The central midfielders can push forward more when he is on the ball as they know he's not going to lose it cheaply... He is a class act and we must sign him in the summer. I don't want to make us sound like a 1 man team as we have a lot of really good players but Pienaar is instrumental in bringing the best out of them also.
 
Moyes
 
I think we all would agree the gaffer has been nothing short of magnificent over the past 10 years. Yes we have no silverware but just think from where we have come from! Also he has done all that on a net spend of just over £2mil a season. It's exceptional. My thoughts are now has he taken us as far as he can?
 
For me the answer lies with the man himself. Over the last 10 years he has had two 5 year plans. 1st was to lower the average age of the squad and make us a secure premier league team which he has done at a canter. The 2nd... Get European football regularly and win that elusive trophy. We have made 3 appearances in Europe in the last 5 years, reached 1 cup final and 2 Semi's so you would probably have to say he's failed but boy has he come close. With the money being spent in today's game he's gave it a bloody good go and I don't think any other manager including Alex Ferguson would have done as well.
 
So has he took us as far as he can? Does he bottle it in the big games? With more and more money being pumped in to the game and the stats in the bigger games against him you could be tempted to say yes and get someone else in to give it a go? Slaven Bilic? Brendan Rodgers? Paul Lambert? Who knows how they would get on but I trust David Moyes to know when he has taken us as far as he can.
 
It looks like 'Arry is off to manage England so would the Spurs job tempt him? Maybe but for me the decision will all be down to Moyes. He and Bill will sit down and set out the plan for the next 5 years... If Moyes thinks it's realistic and achievable then I am behind him all the way!
 
5 Year Plan
 
I would think the plan would be along the lines of win a trophy or two and compete in the Europa League regularly while trying to push for a Top 4 finish. To do this we all know what we need... Money!
 
I'm not one who is going to get on Bill's back. For me it's as simple as if someone wanted the club we would have heard about it in the Media. If people are interested and being put off as the price is to high or he still wants to be Chairman it would have been leaked as these people know the fans would like a sale and would get the media on side but let's not get in to that. For me Moyes needs about £25mil to spend in the summer for us to improve again next season. I can't tell you how much he is going to be given in the summer but I reasonably confident he could make that money by selling players and doing some wheeling and dealing.
 
Rodwell
 
For me he is average. Could he become a top player? Maybe... I seem little glimpses at times and think he could be class but he doesn't show it often enough. He has had a few injuries over the past few years and not really had a regular run in the team but earlier in the season he played a good 8/9 games in the middle of the park with Fellaini and on paper it looked a great partnership but for me it didn't work out. Moyes obviously sees him everyday in training but with Gibson doing well at the moment and the cover we have with Neville, Osman & Cahill who can play in that position as well as the emerging Francisco Junior who looks a very good player I would let him go for anything over £10mil as I think other teams rate him very highly and I think he could flourish at another club. I just don't think Everton is right for him.
 
Cahill
 
My final point is Tim Cahill. One of Moyes' best but is he past it? This season I think we all know he has been poor. He has had a few games where he has played well but we all know him for his goalscoring. I know a lot of Blues are saying sell him in the summer but realistically with his age I don't think we would get much more than £5/6mil for him and for me he still has a lot to offer. Will he get back to his brilliant best? Maybe not but all teams need a Tim Cahill. A fighter, warrior, battler! He will always give 100%. The young lads coming up through the ranks have someone to look up too. A great ambassador for the club and footballing wise he could make a massive impact coming off the bench like Big Dunc in 04 but what I would say is don't write the Blue Kangaroo off just yet! With Jelavic with him I think they will both flourish next season if we get Pienaar tied down or get another creative midfielder in so for me Tim's best season is yet to come!

Good points, well made. I've just watched us draw 4-4 at the theatre of nightmares and I think that just goes to show how valid all of your points are Danny, especially the one about Moyes. Considering the disappointment of last week he's got the lads up and they were immense today, Felli was superb. So proud to be blue today (as always!). IMWT!!

I completely agree with the Distin comments, been one of the most consistant players for Everton and would easily get into most teams defence. He always talks of twitter and makes the effort for the fans, great footballer!

Just ifs? My only wish in life is to start one season like we finish them. IF.. we had won just 3/4 more games, where would we be now, last year and the year before for that matter? I know, 'Ifs,' but hey we can dream. That is down to the manager to correct next season and then watch out. IMWT - COYB

Cahill can be a squad player at best next year. Been a great servant, but past it now. I remember saying the same thing at the start of this season. Neville, Osman, Hibbert, Rodwell, Strac, Anichebe, Coleman...all players that are only really good enough to be squad players due to either age and/or general limited ability. Whoever is in charge come next season has one heck of a job on their hands bringing down the overall age of the squad, whilst bringing in a quality of player that will actually improve on what we have....with virtually no money. I'm not sure that Moyes actually wants to be around come next season. If Spurs tease him away then I would like to see someone like Lambert, Martinez or Rogers. As stated above, we might not necessarily improve our league position or actually win something with a new manager, but at least the football would be more entertaining and less negative. If you have a squad of a few good players and others that 'make up' the team, as Everton do, you get the best out of them, and overcome the 'bigger' teams by making sure the players are fired up for a game...Moyes doesn't seem to be doing this very often this season, and has a history of not getting the team fired up for the big games. Perhaps he feels that he's gone as far as he can, and it's time for someone else to come in with fresh ideas and tactics.

Stand up and take a bow Danny. I have to agree with 99% of what you say and to be honest I am probably wrong on the other 1%. What worries me (amongst many things) is that everybody seems convinced we will find the money for Peanut. He will most likely have the lure of Champions League football and if 'Arry goes, so may some of the team. I think he sees a chance of getting in the team and we will be left like lovestruck teenagers wondering what we did wrong. I, like most of us, have suffered a season of massive lows and too few highs, but I dont see how changing a manager or having some tinpot non football loving person put a few million in and have no heart for the club is going to make our lives better. I wear my colors, drink from my everton mugs (I have many), keep the crest on my car, have no red in my wardrobe and never ever worry about telling people who I support and love, despite the crap I take from plastic supporters who only like to follow a team that wins. I reserve the right to bitch and moan, but through it all, after 50 years, I still love my team and will love them till the day I die. I do not know how we will perform next season or who will be at the club. All I know is that come August the rollercoaster will start again and I will suffer depression and jubilation for the next 9 months. Maybe next year there will be more highs than lows. COYB.....

Good Article, thanks. Unrealistic expectations are an increasing part of modern life so it's good to read some level-headedness on here as opposed to the other sites. And some people call the reds deluded. I'd like Moyes to stay. He needs to decide whether he can improve the team and improve on his own performance too. He's not perfect but what's good about him is I think he knows that on occasion and he does adapt. I think the lack of obvious alternatives speaks volumes and we've been lucky to have him whilst other temporarily popular managers at other clubs have come and gone. A number of the candidates suggested will just get us relegated once they are found out. Moyes is a known quantity.

Excellent article. I think Rodders will come right once he gets the injuries out the way, poor guy has had hard luck this last 18 months. Re Timmy, I can see the old Tim coming back, Jelavic has rejuvenated him, as has Pienaar. I really feel if we had had Pienaar in the FA cup semi we would have put the dark side where they belong. We gave it to them. However, if we can keep Steven I feel next season may well be the year for us at long last. Watch this space.

Completely agree with most of the stuff on here! For me we have to keep Moyes, he has worked wonders under a tight budget! I know he's yet to win anything, and you can only go so long without winning a trophy but with a few more signings I feel we wouldn't be far off! As for Rodwell... he's still young so it could be too early to write him off, but he's been very poor and hasn't progressed at all over the last few seasons, and only seems interested in passing the ball sideways! And finally on to Cahill! I think he still has a lot to offer, but maybe as more of a bit part player. Lets not forget how often he's back and forth to Aus' playing every game for them, as well as playing practically every game for us when he's fit, and has gone some time without a proper rest now! I think once he's had a rest over the summer he could be back to his fighting best next season. Also not forgetting he's 32 now and he's not going to be the player he was 5 years ago, so could benefit from sitting out a few games once in a while. Its also no surprise to me that his goals have dried up with the losses of Arteta and Pienaar at the start of the season, once we get that bit of creativity back he could get back amongst the goals! COYB!

Time to get down to the real business and try and finish as high as possible. Manure is as tough as it gets -but they are not as good as they have been in the past. Bainsey out , hopefully in my selfish mind out of the Euros too. It was another massive let down last weekend but despite the manner of the failure looking back on who we are what we have , I'd still rather be us than them. Perhaps we got deluded, they know they are deluded and have the Satanic rights but it wont last.. COYB & IMWT!!

One big if!!! Had we won last week...we would all be waxing lyrical about how amazing we are and all concerned..the difference 45 minutes can make. The team looked knackered, wiped out, no legs as they say... this kicked in after 35 minutes. We're not splitting atoms here. They have a squad 3 times the size of ours.. and a bench of established internationals. we paid the price of a small squad, thats all... No other manager can do any better or more, no players can offer more.. How fu**ing dare anyone criticise effort, commitment or desire in this squad. We roll again in August and if we're lucky BK may find some ££ to get a few new faces..

I think that the comments above are well put together, I think that Davey Moyes will sit down with Bill and see whats what, from there, We will have to wait and see. I do think that Moyses Job is only half done and the next 10 years should be dedicated to being the dominant force on Merseyside and winning trophies and obtaining Europe. We need a benefactor, but to be fair I simply do not see one on the horizon. Like him or loathe him, Bill is in for the long haul I think unless a miracle or two is worked. As for Moyes, I hope we do look to a new 5 year plan at least. If not then for me the correct candidate would be Martinez from The Big Un. Wigan have showed pure grit and determination over the last few weeks and Martinez is clearly a man they want to and enjoy playing for. He is never blessed with masses of funds and has been a premier league manager for a number of seasons now and maybe a club like Everton would be the best fit for him and for us. His style is fluid, he is young enough to have the hunger and i believe that with a better class of player that Everton have, he could really get the boys playing. For me tho, Moyes has to stay, we have unfinished business and a fantastic academy coming through the ranks. He knows them. He is blooding them the correct way and certainly he should want to stay to over see the next new chapter for our club. I say just watch, over the next few years the game will change once more, players are going to retire, new financial rules will be enforced and believe it or not, our wheeler dealing has put is in a great [place to take advantage of that in the years ahead, we all want success now but would we swap longevity of the club and being able to take our kids and grand kids to the Everton premier league games in the future for a big and risky splash out aiming and gunning for instant glory. We have our heritage and our past to preserve, we would be disrespecting the name of our club to chase an immediate fix (tho we do crave one). We owe it to our proud history and our success in the future to be as competitive as we can in the immediate future and through this frugality (in which Moyes is nothing short of a genius) we can preserve our future. Success is important to us, we are blue Evertonians, its in our DNA, but we don't want to sacrifice our current position for a lesser one. At no cost. We need a positive close to this season by at least finishing above those across the park and a strong preseason and a great belief in what the future holds. Success will come.

Great article and I tend to agree with most of it..I am of the opinion however that Moyes wont be here much longer.. Lets face facts, if Harry does go to England Moyes has to be the number one candidate to take over the helm at Tottingham?..I mean who else is there with as much Prem experience??..That leaves us with the propblem of who do we get?..It's not like we've got a great number 2 who could step in is it? so that means looking elsewhere..Answers on a postcard to........

Obviously my 1st choice would be Moyes but let's say he did go to Spurs or elsewhere... who would you want in? I think this club is made for someone like Slaven Bilic. Done well with Croatia and currently looking for club management for next season so what do we think? Also if we do need to raise funds what players would you sell to get them?

Give that man a pat on the back , well written and very good points, well done Danny , a level head on ones shoulders after all the hurt of last weekend , any way I must be to 1% Distin don’t reply to as I have tweet loads to him all positive may I add , hey will I hold that against him will I shite , top man in my book for walking round the pitch like he did and can I just add everyone applauded him I did not see one fan jeering him. Well done to all. I know this will not go down to well but walking down Wembley way and stood at the station I never got the feeling that the red shite supported where gloating,. IMO even the banter on the tube was good, I got the feeling we were shocked at how shit we played and they were just as shocked they won. Different story at work on Monday may I add.

Plan B? What about Plans C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z? Anyone can go out and borrow more money and drive the club further into debt until it's bankrupt. It's easy, look at Portsmouth, Rangers, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Birmingham, QPR, Blackburn Rovers, Swansea, Cardiff, Plymouth, Southampton and the debts at Chelsea, Man United and Man City etc. etc.

Five games left to show if they can rescue some pride. Whatever happens this close season will have to see the start of team rebuilding again. This team was Moyesy's creation, now he has to do it again. Probably next season will be make or break for both Ross Barkley and Jack Rodwell. I hope they grab the chance of playing either side of Fellaini.

Dan, i love the notion of this £5m Moyes will automatically have to spend, but do you really think it's there? As for £10m for Rodwell, do me a favour. I think we all know by now that he's not all that. So why would anyone else. He'll make a great captain for England under 21's. And even if we did dislocate someones shoulder for it, would Moyes be given the 10? Loved the 2 trophies in the next 5 years part but you need investment in the squad to achieve these things and even if Moyes actually has got the cojones to win a trophy, he will be continually let down by the board. I think your right on Distin mate but you need to get your head out the sand ie Kenwright, granted he's in a tough position but where is the plan B? How long can we go on like this? Ok Bill the ground's run down and it's a nightmare attracting investment so what are you going to do about it?

I don't get what the people think will be achieved by a different manager. We all agree that Moyes can frustrate with his tactics and substitutions at times. But if like some people seem to think we had a Mourinhio or Guardiola at the reigns, what are they going to be able to achieve operating in the same parameters as Moyes. There is only so much you can get out of players!

Some points I agree with and some points I disagree with, but put very well and a pleasure to read. Some other websites could read that and get a grip of reality. I think this Summer will be decisive for Moyesie and Kenwright. I have no real problem with either despite their mistakes but they might just get fed up trying to make a difficult situation work and then walk. I worry about what would happen then. You only have to look at the number of clubs that fell a long, long way after this kinda problem. It's the way the modern game is, always living on the edge.

As for the Cahill point maybe I was getting slightly carried away but I do believe he will have an impact next season. Most of this year he has been played up front with Saha who doesn't exactly bust a gut for the team and I think Cahill thought he was the one doing all the running and lost a bit of heart as Saha would just stroll about. With Jelavic he has a strike partner who will works just as hard as him, chase lost causes and win balls in the air and he will thrive off that. If we put enough balls in the box and the centre halves having to keep an eye on Jelavic and not just Cahill as it has been I think we will see him bag 10 goals or so next season.

Im saying Jon that if Kenwright only has 5 or 6mil for Moyes to spend I think he is more than capable to make funds himself by selling the likes of Rodwell. I can't see a Billionaire buying us before next season and waving a magic wand so we need to find different ways to keep progressing and I think selling a player or two and getting 2 or 3 in would do that. As a squad our size isn't actually too bad. Just look at the Sunderland game the other week.

Totally agree on what has been said here about Distin & the need to make all efforts to getting Pienaar back at the club. As for Moyes's future and his 'next 5 year plan' - I am not so sure. I think the decision that will be made this summer by Moyes, one way or another will affect the next five years or indeed more!

Thank god! A sensible assessment of the last few years and, more importantly, the last few days. Let's not forget, even if we would have won on saturday, we still were only in the final - we hadn't actually won the trophy. The semi in 09 got overhyped and we ended up being really flat for the final - unable to lift ourselves again. We are doing brilliantly as a club. In a league that is becoming increasingly similar to both Spain and Scotland, where only 2 clubs battle for the title any given year, we are doing as well as can ever be expected. At least until some oligarch chucks £10billion our way!

Great article and I agree on all points apart from Moyes. When people ask has he taken us as far as he can, the answer maybe yes, but realistically can anyone take us any further? With no money to spend he's taken us from relegation candidates to top 7 every year. I don't see how any one could take us to the next step without money.
