NOISE AND COLOUR

In the first half of last season Goodison Park was often like a morgue due to the way the team played. It only picked up when the team recovered its form and finished well.

But Evertonians have never been noted for ostentatious displays with banners, flags and scarves, except for big matches. When that happens the crowd can be really intimidating. At Wembley they completely out-numbered, out-sang and out-coloured Man United and Chelsea fans, so we all know can do it. It doesn't happen often enough though. But is that attitude outdated and do fans expect more these days?

So what can the fans do to help increase the amount of noise and colour at home games? How can we get the kids more involved and excited? What new songs are worth singing? What can the club do (apart from winning matches and new signings etc.!) to improve the appearance of the Old Lady? Should there be more American-style pre-match and half-time entertainment and razzmatazz, or are we happy with what we've got?

Its the old bastards who decide they want to sit in Lower Gwladys and ruin the atmosphere by shouting sit down at people all the time. It really does my head in because alot of us would make Goodison the loudest and most intimidating place to come to as it used to be years back. I had to move my season ticket seat because a woman behind me was winging every game. I think fans who arnt prepared to make an atmosphere should sit in areas of the ground not renound for atmosphere like the main stand and then the rest of us can stand up and sing for the entire game as it should be

im not a yank but have lived here long enough to know that the modern game is more than a pie a pint and 90 minutes of pretty shitty football... we live in a digital age. i have a mate whos firm does videos for some of the pro-sports teams here in US and they are amazing... let me give you an everton example.. before the game we have 5 x 3minute videos with songs and classic goals, tackles, saves and such.. big Dunc waving his shirt, his fists, dumping scott gemmill etc... Sheedy twatting them in from 35 yards, Jags peno at wembley ... all with a thumping sound track... the songs become part of the moment and by the time the first ball is kicked were all fired up. Admittedly we have more stop start in US sports and these videos get a lot of airing during game time but the principle is good. I'd rather not have flags but giant banners and mosaic seats are great, they can be topical... poppy day, personalised Alan Ball's birthday, welcome new signings... I just think the club is too staid and doesnt have the creative imagination to make GP intimidating again... the current crop on the pitch isnt going to do that alone..

Scott G has the right idea, all you winging old fella's who don't like flag waving and banners should piss off. Your time has passed and you're making the atmosphere dull. I bet you'd even be the first to complain the crowd is dead! We need something to stir up the crowd. When Everton are playing well the old lady rocks and the away fans shit themselves because they think its gonna come down on their heads, but lets face it we're not playing well right now, and by right now I don't just mean a few games this season. We probably won't be top 6 or 7 again for a while but should we let the atmosphere suffer for that?

If anybody was at the Nurmenburg away game a few years ago, then they'll remember how brilliant the Home Support was..presumably win, lose or draw...seeing as we won. They had the flags and orchestrated cheer leading in one end and were awesome. We were sat in their main stand and they behaved pretty much like ours. Simply speaking I think we should categorise the ground into preferred zones...1. I like to sing, I like to shout...I like to stamp my feet. 2 I like to moan 3. I like to sit nicely with my wife and kids and not tut at the big fat baldy bloke in front who spits his food out with a volley of foul mouthed abuse everytime the linesman lifts his flag. I doubt we could do this at GP, but if we ever move ground then perhaps they could consider zoning it to keep birds of a feather together

The last thing we need before games at Goodison is pre-match shite like in America. I can't stand flags, scarf waving and stupid rehearsed songs like kopites have printed on flyers! We're Evertonians. We go the game to watch football and because we love Everton, not to put on a show for away fans!

Can't stand any of that phony Whip Up The Crowd shite. I don't go the match to be conducted like some fuckin band, I go to watch the football. That's why I never go in the upper Bullens or the Park End, they're full of the worst moaning and whining cunts in any football ground anywhere in the world.

I think it would be good if a number of Everton Ladies matches could be played at Goodison- maybe prior to the mens game. Good for the ladies to play in front of a big crowd - bring the whole club together especially this time of year when the weather is warm

This is how we get the singing going at Marine. This was away to FC United, we were outnumbered by about 4000 mancs.. to 40 of us. But we outsang them! http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/marine/videos/joe-nugent--marine-ultra-fc-14748.html

Oh yeah - What is the team in Spain that has a bloke behind the goal with a big megaphone....screaming out songs for others to follow...again, a wee bit of organisation from a die hard fan wanting to bring his team forward. I think its Real Madrid, right?

I wish they'd give me a go at that Hit The Bar Challenge. I'd piss it.

We all know the difference that great support can bring about. There have been times, like the derby cup tie in 1967, the League Cup Final replay at Hillsborough in 77, Bayern Munich 85, Stamford Bridge in the cup earlier this year, when it was almost impossible for us to lose because of the sheer will emanating from the support.

Leave it as it is. We don't need any gimmicks or any of that American crap.

I have often thought about this whole subject of entertainment and crowd participation. Regarding the crowd participation, I agree, the Redshite bollocks of all kinds of shite being given to you the crowd to pass around is a bit wank, but I am in favour of making the build up to the game and half time a bit more entertaining especially considering Blue Bill's back ground. Surely he might know someone who can do something a bit more entertaining than the cross bar challenge. How about an MC who can get the crowd laughing to a few (clean) jokes. Regarding Singing in the crowd, I must admit, sitting a dozen seats away from the Away fans in the Upper Bullens, i stick my head into my neck and shirk at the songs they sing about our "shitty crowd" and "shall we sing a song for you" and "ssshhhhhhh"....I mean even fukin Wolves pissed me off last season with their comments and what the fuk have they got to be proud and sing about? So, I have often thought that an MC of good enough quality could also try to introduce songs that people could perhaps write into him with their suggestions. If they are good enough and clean enough then they get "aired" by the MC and away we go, years and years of songs etched into our minds and memories. I was at a few away games over the years and some stick out in my mind, especially the Standard Leige game (in the pissing down rain of belgium) and hearing their crowd singing great songs, with different parts of the stadium contributing with their own parts.....cracking song about Fella too.... The other one was AZ Alkmaar (this time in the fukin baltic freezing cold) and hearing a similar thing where the two ends had a sing off..... The crowd plays such a massive part in the players attitude and aptitude. I met Neil "Dissa" Pointen once and he said the crowd is shit at Everton when a player makes a mistake or fucks up, I remember him saying this made him feel shit (i bet that happened a lot hey..!) so if we had a better atmosphere in the ground the players attitude and confidence would be effected positively. So for me, its simple....spend a bit of wedge on a comedian / MC, give him Mic before the game and at half time, give him an email inbox at Evertonfc.com and task him with getting some songs on the goal, crowd involvement pre-KO and Half Time, get some jokes on the go and make people smile.
