5, Birmingham 2 / December 13th 1975

Dobson, Latchford, Telfer, Jones.
Scorers:

I
was 6 years old and had suddenly got big into football, especially
Everton. Having seen them on Sunday afternoon editions of the
Kick off Match throughout the early months of the 75-76 season
I begged my dad to take me to Goodison. He was a rugby league
man and considered football a game for cissies so my hopes were
not high. But then suddenly on that Saturday morning as we walked
back from the shops in Maghull he asked me if I wanted to go along
to see Everton play Birmingham that afternoon. From that moment
on I have just fleeting memories of that day but the excitement
and sense of wonder will remain with me forever.
Getting
off the bus at Walton Church, entering the Gwladys Street stand
through the turnstiles and that incredible never to be forgotten
moment when you step out to see the wide green pitch and what
then seemed the massive stands of Goodison and those enormous
goal posts. That on its own would have been enough of a thrill
for me. But there followed a great match with a hatful of goals
and a tremendous result for an Everton side struggling in lower
mid table.
I've
since been told that Howard Kendall was in the Birmingham team
that day but he meant nothing to me at the time. What I do recall
is that goals from Latchford, Telfer, Dobson, Hamilton and Gary
Jones took Everton to a 5-2 victory. The only goal that I now
recall is the fifth which was scored as night and a fog dropped
over Goodison. It was hit from around the edge of the penalty
area and flew into the bottom corner. I recall jumping up and
down in fantasy land that my first ever game should bring such
a great result.
From
that day on I became an increasingly regular visitor to Goodison.
Incredibly I did not see an Everton side get beat for 5 years
even though these were hardly vintage times but that first day
will always be one of the most memorable and happiest days of
my life. Geoff Barnes Ormskirk (25/10/04) |

Everton:
Myhre, Hinchcliffe, Ball, Tiler, Dunne, Thomas, Farrelly, Cadamarteri,
Madar, Ferguson, Barmby (Arse)
Scorers:
Ferguson (3)
My
first match was at home against Bolton and my hero at that time
was 'Big Dunc'. Most of the team that day were average, however
Ferguson managed to rip apart the defence with his dominance in
the air. Eventually managing to secure a hat-trick and all three
points with a towering header into the bottom corner!! This 3-2
thriller completed my love for the Blue Boys and have now been
an Evertonian for 15 years. Deryl Thomas (20/10/04) |

5, Ipswich Town 2 / 16th September 1961
Everton:
Dunlop,
Parker, Thomson, Gabriel, Labone, Harris, Lill, Young, Wignall,
Temple, Fell.
Scorers:
Temple (3), Bingham, Young
My
first match was against Ipswich Town on the 16th September, 1961
when I was just nine years old. My Dad had decided it was time
to educate me after several years of taking me to watch Prescot
Cables, who were then a real force in non-league football. The
Blues won 5-2 against the newly promoted yokels from Suffolk,
who then went on to win the league at the end of the season! My
Dad chose this game as my mother was an Ipswich girl, born and
bred. I remember him buying me Everton Mints before the game and
standing in the back half of the old paddock. Recently, I managed
to get hold of the programme from E-Bay which is now framed and
mounted on the wall in pride of place. You never forget that first
day at Goodison, do you? Trevor Powell [Pembrokeshire]

With
my dad and my uncle and their mates, I remember the traditional
standing outside the pub with a bottle of lemonade and munching
a packet of crisps and a bag of everton mints while they had a
few bevvies. (My kids get the same treatment now of course!).
There weren't thousands but millions of people and we were in
the street end. I was sitting on a barrier and as the crowd surged
forward I was carried forward in the crush, then as the crowd
surged back I was carried up onto the barrier again, My first
game and I was flying. The adults laughing as I wondered out loud
why my blood was red, but they soon corrected me, "Don't
worry son, it's blue alright". We won 5-4 after being 4-1
up I think. There was a cranky WBA fan standing on his own in
the Street end and giving it loads for WBA.
After
that I've always respected the passion other supporters have for
their clubs. Here I am, still blue and my kids blue through and
through, just like their dad, their grandad and their great grandad!
It really is in the blood. Denis Byrne

I
would really appreciate some help with my first match. I think
it was in 1958 and we were playing Man Utd. at Goodison. I think
we won, but my main memory was of Jimmy Harris turning the Man
U left back inside out before scoring an absolute screamer into
the top left corner of the net. PLEASE TELL ME IT WASN’T A DREAM!!!!

Everton:

Telfer, Goodlass, Jones
Scorers:
Telfer (2), Hamilton
My
first game at Goodison was Everton V's Wolves, would have been
during the 75/76 season at Goodison, according to a mate of mine
who is a Wolves fan, he say's we won 3 - 0, but doesn't remember
the scorers.
I
would usually go and watch the Blues whenever they played West
Brom or Wolves, but until the 75/76 season I had never been to
Goodison.
Supported
the Blues all my life, as my father did, we used to live in North
Wales but moved to the Midlands when I was 6 years old... Goodison
is special, whenever I am back in the UK and I am able to catch
a game, I usually arrive around midday, get a programme, a couple
of beers in the Wimslow, followed by fish & chips from one
of the local chippies, you can sense the atmosphere building,
its just great to be there at times.
I
Will be listening to the game later on Radio Everton through the
computer...you can't beat the commentary when Duncan Mac or Snods
is on live, they come out with some real howlers & classics.
Blue Kipper has been a great read, the 'Shouts' page has had me
in fits of laughter...the rest of the lads here in the office
are sometimes wondering what the hell I'm sniggering at!!!
Speaking to another mate here in Dubai last weekend who is a Pompey
fan, who met Rooney in a bar called "Scarlets" at the
Emirates Towers Hotel...this was last season when Rooney &
Everton had a break, Everton had no game because we were out of
the FA Cup...it was the week before we played Pompey and Rooney
scored the winner...anyway, we were jokingly saying that we should
get one of the many Russian or Chinese hookers here to say she
had been shagged by Rooney here in Dubai...that would have heaped
more bad press if we had sent that rumour to the News of the World!!!...fortunately,
even though he has now gone down the road to Man Ure, I'm not
that vindictive and wouldn't want to cause any more problems for
them...plus he did behave himself and after a few drinks went
off to his hotel with his girlfriend Colleen. Malky Malcolm

Four
selections here. First in 1970 whilst on holiday in Galway, Southern
Ireland. My dad and his mate Freddie who's family we where on
a camping holiday with said we were going over to Dublin for the
day. On arriving at a packed pub, he then told me we were going
to see a football game, still no indication of who it was playing.
On entering the ground which was pretty packed, the first player
I saw was Alan Ball warming up in the Royal Blue of Everton, so
Shamrock Rovers was the first of many away trips for me. Can't
for life of me remember the score.
Secondly
in 1978 witnessing our first live victory over the Devils Children
courtesy of a belter from Andy King. It would be easy to then
go on about the successful periods of the 80s, but my next two
games which meant a lot to me where the games my two sons first
attended and where then bitten by the blue bug.
Huddersfield
Town in the league cup in the 90s, not too inspiring from my point
of view of the game, but i was quite happy to watch my lad take
it all in for the first time.
Next up was my second lad, remember Sunderland on Boxing Day about
5 years ago. Sunderland where playing quite well then, I didn't
think we would beat them but just hoped we would score a couple
to give my little fella something to remember. A thumping 5-0
win and my little lad screaming and waving his arms around still
lives long in the memory - happy days. K. Pickett (18/09/04)

I went with my dad and grandad, both who had been Evertonians
all their lives. I think my grandads first match was in 1906.
He was certainly there when Dixie scored his 60th goal in a season
and when Goodison had it's biggest ever attendance. Everton had
a young team out that day, as it was the week before the FA Cup
Semi against Leeds, which we won 1-0.
We
were seated in the Upper Gladys Street stand above the boys pen.
I remember the smell of hot dog onions, the huge crowds and funnily
enough the strange smell of the football programme. I remember
being so excited I had a banging headache all day. I've been a
fanatical blue ever since as have all my family,(four generations
of them). I also remember the half time scores on cards being
stood against the paddock wall. Another memory was how huge the
Goodison Road terraces were prior to the building of the main
stand. Happy days!! Terry Keen (13/09/04)

Scorers:
Stevens, Vernon, Young.
My
dad took me to Goodison when I was 11 to see Everton V Leicester
City. It was September 1962 I think we won 3-2. We sat in the
old Goal Stand (now called the Park End, I'll never forget the
atmosphere inside the Ground, the crowd were fantastic. I can't
remember who scored but I do remember two old fellers walking
round the pitch carrying a long board advertising boxing at Liverpool
Stadium, what happened to that.
I've
been a blue ever since. Could
you tell me who scored and what the gate was. I think Gordon Banks
had a punch up with Billy Bingham. Mike Squires (06/09/04)
