Everton 3 Sunderland 0 / Dec 23rd 1967

Everton: West, Wright, Wilson, Kendall, Labone, Harvey, Young, Ball, Royle, Hurst, Morrisey

Scorers: Ball, Royle, Husband (sub)

I remember the smells of sweat and piped tobacco and the amazing green of the fresh turf.

My dad, who hated footy and never went again, and I were in the Bullens Road Stand and a loud mouthy women shouting, c'mon Tommy constantly in my dad's earhole and me loving every scream and kick.

I was hooked and managed to go with the neighbour next door. A game I also remember is Arsenal the year we won the title. I remember arriving at 12'oclock to stand in the Bullens Road terrace, magical. 2-2 , a full house, the gate closing, and running to the Park End just making it in time, and Alan Whittle heads home. I remember West Brom 2-0, Champions, the man next to me biting his nails to the quick, and guys running on the pitch, relief, screaming and sheer joy at 12 years old.

Att: 8,067

Everton: Southall, Harper, Bailey, Ratcliffe, Higgins, Richardson, Steven, Heath, Sharp, King, Sheedy

Cant remember anything about the game, was in the Upper Gladwys Street. I know Sharp scored, to put us 2-0 up, but we lost the lead, but went through on a 3-2 aggregate. That season was the first I went - the rest is history. (Rob English 19/01/05)

Everton 1 Notts Forest 1 / November 18th 1985 / Att: 27,860

Everton: Southall, Harper, Ratcliffe, Mountfield, Van Den Hauwe, Heath, Steven, Lineker, Sharp, Bracewell, Sheedy.

Scorer: Bracewell

Standing in the Gladwys Street terrace, packed to the rafters. It was a cold Saturday afternoon. I couldn’t see much as I was only 8 or 9, but the atmosphere was unforgettable. Forest were a good side in them days, and they had players like Neil Webb, Southport’s ‘pele’ Peter Davenport and a baldy b*stard in midfield called Johnny Metgod.

I was with my Dad who is in fact a red, but he said we deserved to win that day. Bracewell cancelled out a Davenport opener in an entertaining match. Never forget the singing throughout the game and the atmosphere that was when the Gladwys was terraced. A very happy memory. And, I saw Graeme Sharp coming out of the players lounge after the match (my dad took me the Winslow for a few lemo’s)….tw@t of a mack Sharpy lad. Phil Burkert (06/01/05)

Everton 4 Sunderland 1 / April 6th 1985 / Att: 35,978

Everton: Southall, Stevens, Bailey , Ratcliffe, Mountfield, Steven, Bracewell, Reid, Sheedy, Sharp, Gray

Scorers: Gray (2), Sharp, Steven

Dear bluekipper, this was not my first match, but it was in the first season that I started watching our beloved Blues. What a year to start going to the game. I was twelve and we won the title that year. This game though sticks out in my memeory so much, and it was Sunderland at home. We trounced them 4-1, and to this day I have never seen football played like that. Everton were fantastic, and the ground came alive. I remember Andy Gray scoring some diving headers, which epitomised his style of play, brave and fearless.

A few years later the BBC, brought out a video of Everton's history, and this game featured on it. I still watch that video today, and look back on that great season, when we were crowned Champions. Hopefully with Moyesy the good times will come again. Des Walsh (21/12/04)

Everton 3 Birmingham 1 / August 29th 1981 / Att: 33,045

Everton: Arnold, Wright, Bailey, Walsh, Lyons, Thomas, Ainscow, Eastoe, Biley, Hartford, Ross

Scorers: Ainscow, Eastoe, Biley

My first match was against Birmingham City at the start of the 1981 season. I remember my dad telling me that we had to go as it was Howard Kendall's first game in charge of the Blues. I still have the programme from the day, and all the players we signed in the Summer were on the front. Most of them faded into oblivion, but a certain Mr. Southall was signed in that group, and what a signing he turned out to be.

I also recall one of our signings Alan Biley scoring a superb goal down the Street End, and I think we won 3-1. Great day, great memories.

I now live in Cambridge, and I have not been up to Merseyside for many years. My son is now four, and one day, he like me will sample the atmosphere of Goodison Park. Richard Stevens (09/12/04)

Everton 4 West Ham 1 / Sept. 24th 1960

Everton: Dunlop, Parker, Jones, Gabriel, Labone, Harris B, Lill, Collins, Harris J, Vernon, Ring.

Scorers: Vernon (2), Lill, Ring

It was I believe 1960. I was four years old and the opposition was West Ham.

I know this because I remember asking my Dad "Where's Alex Young Dad" ? "He's injured son" "Where's Bobby Moore Dad"? "He's away playing for England, son". Why did he never give me a straight answer?

The result? No idea (I was four, give us a break), but I have an abiding memory of walking up the steps in the Park End and a thin sliver of sky blue grew and grew as I came up the stairs and then a vision that will live with me forever. The beautiful huge rectangle of green so bright it almost glowed and the stands grew up on either side like some giant warehouses for people. I was hooked from that instant. Actually I was hooked before that, God wrote my name on the register of Evertonians before I was born but I shall never forget that experience. We sat on long benches too. None of yer namby pamby individual seats. You would stamp your feet and the whole building shook. Scary but exciting. "Come on you blues". Happy days.

But am I right in picking the game ? Did we play West Ham in 1960 and did neither the Golden Vision nor England's best ever captain play ?

We stopped going in the Stands and went in the ground instead after the World Cup in 1966 because the price went up to six shillings and my Dad couldn't afford it. No discount for children either. Our club, the same as it ever was. George Stuart (02/12/04)

Arsenal 4 Everton 0 / October 17th 1970

Everton: Rankin, Wright, Newton (K), Kendall, Kenyon, Harvey, Whittle, Ball, Royle, Newton (H), Morrissey.

I was 8 and as we live on the south coast getting to a London game was my parents only option. What made it worse was my mate same age was a 'Gooner.' All I can remember was crying my little eyes out! The best seats in the stadium were 80p as my mother still has them. I do recall an Arsenal penalty, Alan Ball, Kendall, Royle, Bob Wilson, Ron Radford etc

The following season we went again, and it was one each - Everton scored first (Howard Kendall for the edge of the box). I remember it was the season Alan Ball left. Been a blue ever since, still only get to the London / Southampton games.....one day I will make it to Goodison. Mark Evenden Eastbourne. (22/11/04)

Everton 3, Newcastle 0 / April 20th 1987 / Att:43,576

Everton: Southall, Pointon, Stevens, Watson, Langley, Power, Steven, Sharp, Clarke, Snodin, Power.

Scorers: Clarke (3)

My Dad took me and my sister to my first match, aged 7 in 1987. I was chosen. We drove from Netherton. I remember walking down a terrace street and then seeing the stadium, magnificent. Chips and curry sauce, then walked into the Bullens end. The moment my little head got above the stairs, I saw this beautiful striking green carpet and was surrounded by blue and while seats. The old church in the corner where we went to before the game to get an Eccles cake and read the programme.

We played Newcastle, we beat them 3-0. I think Wayne Clarke got a hatrick. Tricky Trev terrorised them on the right hand side. Sheedy was about to take a free kick, we could hear the Glwadys St end, "Sheedy, Sheedy, Sheedy. What sticks in my mind was the Z cars theme tune when the players came out. I wondered why my Dad and everyone else was standing up, like singing in church. I stood up out of respect and cheered. Newly formed hairs that had only just grown on my arms had stood up. I was officially a life time Evertonian, so will my kids be. Evertonians are born, not manufactured....John Reece (15/11/04)

Everton 0, Notts. Forest 1 / Dec 23rd 1966

Everton: West,Wright, Brown, Gabriel, Labone, Harvey, Scott, Ball, Young, Temple, Morrisey.

It was a night game, played on my eighth birthday. So many say how night games have that extra special atmosphere, and it's true isn't it?

Walking up to the ground, I could see the glow of our dead tall floodlights from Southport Road, the crowd growing along the way as blokes poured out of the pubs. Uncle Danny had bought me some Bournville dark chocolate, and it still reminds of that night 38 years ago, as does the taste of Wrigley's chewy. We were in the Bullens upper, and when I got to the top of the stairs and saw the lush green turf for the first time, I was stuck dumb.

The players came out in those days a good 10 minutes before the kick off and practiced their shooting. I remember thinking how this baldy bloke in a red shirt could kick the ball dead hard from outside the area. I thought we'd better watch him. It turned out to be Terry Hennessey who was just an average Welsh international.

The Blue Boys then proceeded to do what they have done so many times since. We battered them but their goalie, Peter Grummit had a blinder. We were robbed by an Ian Storey Moore header. But still it was a great night for me and a great birthday present. The following season I started going regular with my mates, we were so good in the late sixties, you just knew we wouldn't get beat at Goodison.

I don't remember us losing until the shite beat us in Dec 1969, though I know its probably just my memory playing up. Steve Robinson (07/11/04)

Everton 0, Southampton 1 / March 18th 1967

Everton: West, Wright, Wilson, Hurst, Labone , Kendall, Young, Ball, Husband, Harvey, Morrissey

My dad used to go all the time in the early sixties when I was a toddler and eventually gave in to all my nagging when I was six years old.

It was Southampton, March 1967 and for us living in Moreton on the Wirral it involved a bus to Seacombe Ferry. I can still remember the bus conductor reeling off a big long ticket that would take us on the ferry as well. Once at the Pier Head we got the old 44e to Walton and we walked up to the ground. It was raining that day but I was already on a high. We got to the Bullens Rd., and there were huge lines of old fellas stood waiting to get in.

The smell of horseshit and pipe tobacco was really strong and I felt like a midget until my dad got me sat on a barrier in the Paddock, much to some old codgers disgust whose speck we'd ruined. Then it hit me ! The size of the place, the huge stands were almost cathedral like. The pitch seemed like it was fluorescent green, and when the teams came out the vivid colour's of our Royal Blue & White and their red & white striped shirts and black shorts has always stuck with me and made it one of my favourite fixtures. However we lost that day 1-0. A young Martin Chivers scored for them.

'Was that a goal dad,' I asked. 'Yes for them my dad snarled.' It didn't matter I was hooked. I spent the whole game staring in awe at the gable end on the old Goodison Rd. stand roof and watched Gordon West replace divots in the pitch.

It was magical stuff for a six year old, and it turns out a certain Howard Kendall made his home debut for us that day and I made sure my dad took me again the following season when we won 4-2 against the Saints. They had a recently signed Jimmy Gabriel in their side, and he got a great Goodison reception which helped instill in me a feeling for what being an Evertonian is all about. Happy days. Steve Hughes, Leeds. (02/11/04)
