Everton 3 Stoke City 0 / May 4th 1968

Everton: West, Wright, Wilson, Kendall, Labone, Harvey, Whittle, Ball, Royle, Kenyon, Morrissey

Scorers: Ball (2), Royle

My first game was on the Saturday before the 1968 Cup Final against Stoke
City. I think we won 3-0. I was 8 at the time and had been to Goodison on
many previous occasions watching the reserves. My Dad took my brother and
myself in the Gwladys St Stand. As a few other people have mentioned, my
first impression was how red Alan Ball's hair was, it was a suuny day I
think, and it stood out a mile.

I remember my Dad pointing out Roy Vernon, who was then playing for Stoke,
and telling me about how great he was when he played for us. The team and
the scorers would be great, I'm sure Joe Royle scored. I don't think anyone
was rested for the Cup Final either. Gary (12/07/05)

Big Joe In Full Stride

Everton 3, Leicester City 2 / December 20th 2003 / Att: 37, 007

Everton: Martyn, Pistone, Stubbs, Unsworth, Naysmith, McFadden, Gravesen, Carsley, Killbane, Campbell, Radzinski.

Subs: Hibbert (Pistone), Rooney (McFadden) , Ferguson (Campbell), Simonsen, Li Tie.

Scorers: Howey o.g, Rooney, Radzinski

The first match I had intended to see was the Southampton clash, however, I could not go as it turned out. I then tried the Wolves game (2-0) but again I could not go. My Dad told me about the Leicester game.

And so it was that on a barren, overcast and wet day, I saw my first ever match (a bit shameful at 14 years and 259 days old, but I was old enough to understand the stuff). And what a match! Right from the off, Everton played Leicester off the park without playing too well themselves, there was only one team which looked like scoring. The inevitable happened at around half three, a scramble in the box, Carsley had a toot, Walker saved, ball hit Howey, ball in Park end net, Goodison went berserk.

From then on it looked like a rout, until Dowd gave a bent decision (sorry) in favour of Bent after HE brought down Stubbs. Ferdinand leathered it into the top right, 1-1, half time. With the December sky darkening (well it was the shortest day of the year), so was the mood of my fellow blue sympathisers. In about a second, the team clad in black and turquoise were sprinting out of the tunnel to boos (particularly at Ferdinand), with the royal blue heroes following soon.

A mirror of the first half performance, but slightly improved by both teams. Everton were still better, but Leicester had potential. Then it happened, A harmless looking Leicester attack from way out, defence at sea, cross, look up, Scowcroft, and I watched in horror as the ball eluded Nige's dive and the away section directly opposite me exploded, with the Everton fans looking at certain relegation. If at this point, the game had ended, we would have stayed up only on goal difference.

As it was, I was very optimistic. BRING ON MR POTATO HEAD!!! The board was raised, 18 for 24. The effect was immediate and my hopes were before long fulfilled. Rooney charged and for the second time that afternoon, the Gwladys street net was broken. 2-2. Seconds after supersub Ferguson was introduced, a good fight had been completed. After a world class one two with Radz, the Canadian midget swung his left boot at the ball and rebounded in off the post, 3-2. Game over.

Since that day I went on to attend every single home game (bar cup games) from Charlton on January 17 to Bolton on May 8. This last season I saw Boro, Man City, Sunderland, Chelsea, Brum and Newcastle. A total of 15 games, hopefully number 16 will be United at home in august 2005! Or a champions league home date. Everton 9, Leicester City 2 / November 28th 1931

Everton: Sagar, Williams, Cresswell, Clark, Gee, Thomson, Critchley, White, Dean, Johnson, Stein

Scorers: Dean (4), Johnson (2), White (2), Clark

I have noticed on your site that you have a page devoted to the first game you went to. Well I am an old man, and I was lucky enough to see the great Dixie Dean score four against Leicester City in November 1931. I will never forget it. We won by a staggering 9 goals to 2. My father took me. And I have been to nearly every home game since. I cannot remember the teams that were playing - maybe you can find out for me. Let's see how many of your readers can keep up with that! Great site, lads. Keep up the Good Work! / Robbie (01/07/05)

Everton 2, Huddersfield Town 2 / December 27th 1971

Everton: West, Scott, Morrissey, Kendall, Kenyon, Darracott, Husband, Johnson, Royle, Hurst, Jones

Scorers: Johnson, Scott

I'd have been 7 years old, taken to the Park End by my Dad. Memories are vague probably because I could hardly see anything. I think Huddersfield took the lead twice, and I also think David Johnson scored. I do know that I made my Dad take me to the toilet late on, and we missed our second goal. Peter Hatch (16/06/05)

Everton 1 Huddersfield 1 / September 13th 1947

Everton: Sagar, Saunders, Greenhalgh, Bentham, Humphreys, Farrell, Mc Ilhatton, Wainwright, Dodds, Fielding, Eglington

Scorer: Wainwright

My first match - Everton 1 Huddersfield 1 (Eddie Wainwright scored) September 1947 I think (ain’t I old – I was 9 then!)

My outstanding match was Everton 8 Plymouth 4 (27.2.54). John Willie Parker scored 3 while Dave Hickson and Jack Chisholm (Plymouth centre half) were fighting all over the pitch – unbelievable. Everton 7 Doncaster 1 (27.9.52) - Tommy Eglington scored 5 - was also great. Beat that lot, you kids!! Gordon Bell (06/06/05)

Everton 1 Brum 1 / Saturday 23rd April 2005 / Att:36,828

Everton: Martyn, Hibbert, Pistone, Weir, Yobo, Arteta, Cahill, Kilbane, Carsley, Osman, Beattie

Subs: Watson (Pistone 46), Ferguson (Carsley 46), Bent (Beattie 61), McFadden, Wright

Scorer: Big Dunc

After constant pestering by my grandson Jack, a visit to Goodison after his dads efforts to take him to Analfield. "I don't know why he takes me, he knows I'm a Blue." Unfortunately he got to see the Birmingham game a waste of effort on all of our parts.

Having done in all my credit card in the club shop I pointed out that the shirts he just bought will be changing in the Summer (thinking of the sponsorship). He just smiled and said, "yes they will have the Champions League badge next year." Nine years old and so full of wisdom!

Everton 1 Burnley 1 / April 22nd 1950

Everton: Burnett, Moore, Hedley, Grant, Falder, Lello, Buckle, Wainwright, Catterick, Farrell, Eglington

Scorer: Catterick

My dad took me to see Everton play Burnley April 1950. A one- one draw. It's a very vague memory. I remember Burnley equalising with a near-post diving header. The player was called Knight or McKnight I think. I'd love to know if I'm right and both teams on the day if you can get hold of them.

Everton 2 Tottenham 1 / February 28th 1959

Everton: Dunlop, Parker, Bramwell, Harris B, Jones TE, Meagan, Harris J, Thomas, Hickson, Collins, Laverick.

Goalscorers: Collins, Thomas

Sat in the Bullens Road stand. I think it was 2 shillings and sixpence to get in, not a king's ransom in those days. It was the reverse of our 10-4 hiding, which I believe is still our greatest ever defeat.

I Remember at the start of game some wag running onto pitch to present Danny Blanchflower with a packet of Shredded Wheat and my Dad said it was probably empty. Could you fill in details regarding the teams and date etc.

Many Thanks Bob McEvoy (17/04/05)

Everton 1 Norwich 5 / October 9th 1993 / Att:20,631

Everton: Southall, Holmes, Hinchcliffe, Ebbrell, Jackson, Ablett, Ward, Horne, Cottee, Rideout, Beagrie

Scorer: Rideout

I was 4 years old still remember it like it was yesterday even though until the age of 7 most things are a blur! We scored 1st but we got beat 5-1. In the end Ekoku scored 4. I'd been to the odd reserve game and a couple of friendlies but from then on that was it. I was from a family of staunch blues anyway and thank god for that. As a kid me dad used to go the long way around Anfield in the car if he ever had to go that way, just to avoid it. Can ya smell it, poo! HA HA; its little things like that, that stick in the mind. Its true what they say we are born, we are special and no explanation is needed to understand! Even with the bad result that day I've had a season ticket from the season after that! 10 years now and we've been through a lot but its in our blood. Anon (12/04/05)

Not One Of Nev's Better Memories

Everton 4, Ipswich 1 / December 31st 1994 / Att: 25,667

Everton: Southall, Jackson, Burrows, Ebbrell, Watson, Unsworth, Horne, Parkinson, Ferguson, Rideout, Hinchcliffe.

Scorers: Ferguson, Rideout (2), Watson

It was the 31st December 1994, a not-so-glorious season for us Blues. Everton were at home to Ipswich that day and I went along with me Grandad, Brother, Mother and Father. My view was rather impaired by two fat, sweaty Scousers in front of me. After 10 minutes Ipswich took the lead and I (being my annoying self and not realising how great Everton were) took it upon myself to begin a rhyme.

Everton nil Ipswich 1, 10 minutes gone.

Not bad for a 5 year old I thought, then one of the fat, sweaty, curry-munching Scouse maniacs turned round and said "Ey listen mate, it's bad enough as it is!". Me family were wettin themselves with laughter but I didn't understand.

Anyway we beat them 4-1 in the end, can't remember who scored for us bit I am sure Mr Rideout did and Steve Sedgely scored for Ipswich, I think. Dave (30/03/05)

Spurs 0, Everton 1 / March 11th 1970

Everton: West, Wright, Newton, Labone, Kenyon, Kendall, Harvey, Whittle, Ball, Royle, Hurst, Morrissey.

Scorer: Whittle

To date my only match (then we was off to Canada) was Everton 1 'Spurs 0 at White Hart Lane, on March 11,1970. My memory isn't what it was, but I recall Whittle coming and scoring the winner with about 20 minutes left on the clock. (I kept all the clippings but mum threw them out 30 years ago).

Everton 1 Blackpool 0 / April 21st 1956

Everton: Harris (A), Moore, Tansey, Birch, Jones (T.E.) , Farrell, Potts, Fielding, Harris (J), Kirby, Eglington.

First match was in the mid 50's, and Everton won 1-0 against Blackpool. Peter Farrell (Captain of Everton & Ireland) scored the only goal. I remember the ball going through net! I was just a lad. Great days, great team. I named my son Peter Farrell.

Can anyone fill the details of this match?. Cheers

Everton: Dunlop, Parker, Thomson, Gabriel, Labone, Harris, Temple, Wignall, Young, Vernon, Kavanagh.

Scorer: Collins

My first match was around 1960. Everton were at home to Bolton Wanderers, and they lost 3-1. Albert Dunlop was in goal for the Blues and Dennis Stevens who later joined the Blues was playing for Bolton. Can you tell me what year it was and the blues team from that day?

Everton 5 Chelsea 2 / March 28th 1970

Everton: West, Wright, Brown, Kenyon, Kendall, Harvey, Whittle, Ball, Royle, Hurst, Morrissey

Scorers: Royle (2), Ball, Kendall, Whittle

I was shoved in the schoolboys end. I missed the first goal, as I was crushed against the corner wall beside the Bullens. Just reacted rather than saw any of the goals, loved it! Blue for life after that. John Collins (24/02/05)

Two Of The Greats On The Scoresheet That Day

Everton 4 Doncaster 1 / Sept 12th 1953

Everton: Leyland, Donovan, Lindsay, Farrell, Jones, Lello, Buckle, Feilding, Hickson, Parker, Eglington.

Scorers: Eglington (2), Parker (2)

My first match was sat on my dads shoulders at some barely remembered games in 1953. First match under my own steam was vs. Doncaster Rovers in 53. Jimmy O'Neil, Jock Lindsay, Cyril Lello, T.E. Jones, Peter Farrell (Inspirational captain) Wally (Knobby) Fielding, Tommy Eglington, John Willie Parker, Eddie Wainwright, last but far from least Dave Hickson. In the opening minute unnoticed by the referee, Noble the Doncaster center half knocked out Dave with a right hand hayswinger. After treatment Dave came back and immediately dropped Noble with a left hook. The Ref saw that and gave Dave his marching orders. Dick (15/02/05)

My love of Everton was ignited in 1984 when I went to Roker Park for my first match aged 8. Everton won two nil and I may have convinced myself but I think Peter Reid scored. Could anybody fill in any details for me. Love the site and will be promoting it throughout Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland!
