Everton 1 Blackburn 0 / March 14th 1998 / Att: 33,423

Everton: Mhyre, O'Kane, Ball, Tiler, Watson, Bilic, Spencer, Barmby, Madar, Oster, Hutchinson

Scorer: Madar

My First Match was around March time in 1997 agaisnt Blackbrun. It was my Half Brothers birthday a few days earlier so my step dad took us both. I remember the game well because Blackburn had bright oragne shirts on and I sat right in the corner of the family enclosure near the Gwladys Street. Mikel Madar scored the goal I think it was a glancing header. We won 1-0

Everton 0 Spurs 2 / FA Cup 5th Round / Feb 26th 1972

Everton: West, Scott, McLaughlin, Kendall, Kenyon, Newton, Johnson, Whittle, Royle, Lyons, Jones

My first Everton game was I think in 1971 against Spurs. It was a 5th round FA Cup game (I think). I was 17 years old, lived in the South of England (Reading) and made the long journey on my own to see my beloved Everton. It cost me my weeks wages and I don't mind admitting I was shit scared a few times on the way up when I had to change trains at New Street & Crewe where the places were swarming with other fans off to other games (Mainly Man Utd). I was glad when I finally pulled into the famous Lime Street Station & was surrounded by other Evertonians out on Lime street.

The "Cockney Special" was due into Lime St in a few minutes & a few score "boot boys" were waiting for them. I hung around in my new crombie overcoat, tonic trousers, & loafers waiting to see what was going to happen. It didn't occur to me that my Southern accent wouldn't wash when I told them I was a rock solid Evertonian, I got a few slaps & a few kicks & ran like F*#$k & caught the bus opposite the station to Goodison.

Arriving at Goodison was a dream, the Main Stand was sooooo high, but I quickly learned that Glawdys Street was the place to be (putting on my best scouse accent I could manage). I think the crowd was around 55,000, heaving & swaying, I was picked up on more than one occasion & moved about 25 meters completely off my feet, they beat us 3-1 I think, Martin Chivers was rampant, but Dave Johnson beat 3 players in the box before he was stopped.

I got back to Reading at about half past midnight, got a taxi home, woke up at 2 pm on Sunday, roast dinner on my lap & watched the game all over again on "The Big Match", fantastic memories, have lived in Australia for the last 19 years.

Everton 3 Chelsea 0 / September 7th 1957

Everton: Dunlop, Donovan, Tansey, Birch, Jones, Meagan, Harris (J), Temple, Hickson, Fielding, Harris (B)

Scorers: Fielding, Hickson, Temple

I have been an Everton supporter since the age of 6 when my Dad first took me to a match [my being an only child and having no brothers to take instead!!]

My first match attendance as an adult was with a boy-friend down from Battersea for the weekend and we went to Goodison in 1957 to see Jimmy Greaves make his debut for Chelsea. Debut or not, I am pleased to say that Everton won 3 - 0 that day and, does anyone remember Dave King, the Comedian? He was appearing at the Empire and sat on the row in front of us with two glamourous show girls for company.

I am now 66 and still an avid supporter attending matches when I can, because I now live in Carmarthen, South Wales, and its a 4 hour journey by road to Liverpool. My son has followed in my footsteps and wouldn't be anything else but a true blue like me!!

Everton 6 Chelsea 0 / April 29th 1978

Everton: Wood, Robinson, Pejic, Lyons, Wright, Buckley, King, Dobson, Latchford, Telfer, Thomas

Scorers: Latchford (2), Dobson, Lyons, Robinson, Wright

My first Everton game was Everton 6 Chelsea 0, you know the one, Bobby getting his 30th goal of the season and praying before taking his penalty for the prize of 10,000 big ones.

That day was the start of me turn coating from a red to a Blue and I have not looked back since. Bobby instantly became my hero and I couldn't believe the overwhelming feeling of walking into Goodison and seeing a stadium for the first time.

I will never forget it Martin Dobson, Neil Robinson, Billy Wright took us to 3-0 Then the place erupted when Bobby scored his header for 4-0 that was his 29th goal and you could feel the fans willing him on and on. Time was ticking and I think it was Mick Lyons who scored the 5th goal (Another of my favourite players by the way).

I think there was 5 mins left when Mick Lyons went down in the Box and who stepped up but big Bobby you could fell the hearts from every fan pounding and as he shook his tired leg at the ball there was only one outcome, he had done it the place erupted and there followed a great surge as I fell off the bars in the family enclosure as we know it now and there followed a pitch invasion all aimed at Bobby.

I will never forget it. What a game, what a day, what a player. Forever Everton, come on the blues.

Blackburn 0 Everton 0 / 18th December 2004 / Att: 25,191

Everton: Martyn, Hibbert, Weir, Stubbs, Pistone, Osman, Carsley, Cahill, Gravesen, Kilbane, Bent.

The other day I decided to trace back to when I first decided I supported Everton. You see I live in the heart of Blackburn Rovers and Burnley FC country so it's a mystery to most of my mates. And when I spent a few years in Cambridgeshire as a kid with all the Spurs, United, Chelsea and shite fans at my school I was, thankfully, able to point to Reid, Ratcliffe and Big Nev as the true giants of the game.

Anyway, I guess it was when I first saw Andy Gray knocking them in on the news bulletins. Or maybe when Big Nev was keeping them out at the other end. I certainly know I was a confirmed blue-nose by the time of the ECW match.

Either way, it still took me years and years to get to see the blues in the flesh. I blame poor parenting and the threat of being beaten up by the "Barmy Army" and "Clarets" contingent in my area.

So my first match was as an interloper in the CIS stand at Ewood Park, sandwiched between by two "Super Rovers" mates.

So what was good about the match? Perhaps it was walking down to Uncle Jacks pub in Lower Darwen and spotting stacks of Evertonians milling around Lower Darwen. Or maybe it was realising that most of the punters inside Uncle Jacks were from the blue half of Liverpool.

Actually I think it was coming back from the toilets to see Rovers sneak one into the net, disaster. Only to see it ruled out by the ref for offside and walking back up to my seat smirking, but unable to celebrate.

A bore-draw in many ways, but at least I had bragging rights next season when we beat Rovers two-nowt. Although on that occasion I missed one of the goals as I was in the pre-half-time queue for a pint.

Tommy, Ahhh Those Where The Days

Arsenal 2 Everton 0 / April 8th 1989 / Att: 37,608

Everton: Southall, McDonald, Pointon, Ratcliffe, Van den Hauwe, Bracewell, Steven, Nevin, Clarke, Cottee, Sheedy

My friend and I were both 9 and his dad took us to the game. Having become an Everton fan 4 years earlier when we were cheated out of the cup by Man Utd I was SO excited about seeing the mighty Blues in action for the 1st time.

Being 9 and living in deepest darkest Somerset I had never before had the opportunity to get to a game. As you can imagine I was crazy with anticipation and couldnt sleep at all the night before. It all started to go wrong at about 6 in the morning. I pulled on my shirt only to discover that i couldnt find my scarf anywhere. I'd left it at school. Gutted.

When we eventually got to London my friends dad tried to be cunning. Given that we're from Somerset the London underground is a complete mystery. Looking at the map he decided that we should get off at Highbury. Arsenal play at Highbury, therefore the station we need must be Highbury right? WRONG Anyone who knows London will be able to tell you that it's bleeding miles from the ground. We should have got off at Arsenal. D'oh!!!!!!!!!

The resulting walk and run and bus ride meant that we missed the whole of the 1st half and I also lost the Everton rosette that i'd bought to make up for the lack of scarf. It fell off during the sprinting section of the journey.

Everton were one down by the time we got there and to make things even worse we were sat right in the middle of a load of Gooners who went mental when they got a second after half time. The only plus was that we missed Lee Dixon (yes, that's right, Lee Dixon!!!!!) score the opener.

I was a bit of a jinx for the Toffees for a while after that because, despite going quite regularly, I didnt see them win a live game until we beat Man City 3-1 at Goodison in 2001! Sadly my friend Liam who shared that 1st experience of the Mighty Blues at Highbury on that fateful day has still never seen them win.
Kepp up the great work!! Excellent site.
