November 1890

This
is, in all probability, the oldest illustration of an Everton game. The
date is 15 November 1890 and Everton are on their way to their first
league title. John Angus had just been sighed from Sunderland Albion
and sadly died at the end of the season. Hannah had been sighed from
Renton and Robertson from Partick Thistle. Tony Onslow. (20/06/05)

FOOTBALL SENSATION
FAMOUS PLAYERS ALLEGED ATTEMPTS TO SQUARE MATCHES
Allegations
of attempting to bribe certain football players into"squaring matches"
in order that bookmakers might reap the benefit were made at Liverpool,
when George Anderson, formerly a Manchester United footballer was charged
with having conspired to defraud unknown persons who had wagered upon
the result of certain football matches. Mr Wingate Saul(who appeared
for
Everton FC, the prosecutors), said it was alleged that defendant on
behalf of bookmakers, attempted to bribe Everton players when they met
Blackpool on Jan.8. He offered £10 to Fleetwood of the Everton
team ,and later increased this sum to £60, to be divided between
six members of the team. Fleetwood ostensibly kept negotiations in train
to achieve this result, although in reality he reported the matter to
Mr Cuff the Everton Secretary.
Another player Gault, was brought in, who said to Anderson, "Why
do we receive £60 for losing the match?" Anderson replied
"This is the only way players have of getting a living as they
are not paid for playing. Don't be afraid as there are no names mentioned."
Anderson added "I was at Bolton last friday paying out money for
the match squared the week before. Bolton and Port Vale".
In an interview with a jew,who had not been traced, Fleetwood said "the
boys wanted £20 to be going on with," and this sum was to
be handed over on the friday night by Anderson. Mr Cuff still had the
money notwithstanding that after Everton had won 7-2. Anderson called
at Fleetwood's house and demanded its return. He said that this man
would lose a terrible lot of money. Dealing
with other charges Mr Saul said that Anderson and the Jew called upon
the Oldham captain and offered to make it "worth while" for
Blackburn to beat Oldham. They offered to provide him with "a goalkeeper
who could let the ball
through." What defendant was doing was acting for a professional
bookmaker and attempting to "square" matches to suit the book
of the bookmaker on the particular match involved. In respect of the
Manchester United and Burnley match, Anderson unsuccessfully approached
Silcock, Meehan and Woodcock. The hearing was adjourned to tuesday.
Anderson being granted bail.
