Lineker Urges Evertonians To Support EVERTON v BARCELONA on 28th March 2007

Lineker @ Barcelona

Gary Lineker is supporting the Everton Collection Charitable Trust in their quest to raise money to buy the David France Collection. The former Everton player joined Barcelona after being the top scorer for England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The season before he hit 40 goals in one season for Everton.

Gary Lineker says: "It would have been lovely to have been there and if it wasn't for the fact that the BBC have a programme that night that I am working on I would definitely have been there. It will be nice for the Merseyside public to see a few of the old timers from my generation and it should be good entertainment. These are the sort of the games that the Merseyside public tend to make a decent show for because they have got respect for old players and they love their football and I would hope that the Evertonians turn out in their numbers.

I had three great years at Barcelona and it's a fantastic club and a great place to live. I have still got a nice relationship with Barca whenever I go back. Things have changed but in many ways Everton and Barcelona are very similar in that they like to make sure that their old players are looked after and respected by the supporters. The people in charge of both clubs have similar philosophies in that direction. They always make me feel welcome when I go back - both clubs. It will be quite something for the two teams to play together at Goodison. It may happen one day in the Champions League...that would be nice wouldn't it!" (11/01/07)
