Magnificent Seven Evening

Well, we have been privileged to have been on some great doo's over the years, and last night Bluekipper found themselves at Blue Nose's Magnificent Seven's Evening. Managers past and present gathered at Liverpool's Adelphi Hotel to celebrate, well nothing apart from being Blues.

Before the evening got underway, a minutes silence was held to remember Corporal Ben Nowak, who life was sadly cut short whilst serving his country in Iraq last weekend. Ben was a fanatical Evertonian, and he was rightly remembered by his fellow Blues.

Billy Bingham, Howard Kendall, Joe Royle, Colin Harvey, Dave Watson and Moyesy, joined all time greats, Alex Young and Westy and 400+ screaming Evertonians in tale telling and drinking.

In the crowd, Trevor Ross was spotted, and compere for the evening Billy Butler held the evening together, as the drink flowed, and the drink flowed, and the drink flowed.

Bizarrely one of the acts decided to warm the crowd up not with classics like, '... On the Banks of The Royal Blue Mersey', and 'Altogether Now', but an ensemble from none other than the Stylistics, and the sod never even sang 'Na. Na is the Saddest Word.'

A good night was had despite the comics best efforts to ruin it, and Bluekipper were delighted to hand a cheque for £500 to Waggy, whose chosen charity and ours is The Lily Centre.

If You were at the evening and you have any comments, please mail bluekipper

* What a brilliant night! I haven’t enjoyed a do like that so much in years. The singer was awful though and so was the comedian – they must be mates with Brian to get this gig surely?

Billy Butler had me in bulk. The “nice tooth” gag will have me chuckling away for the next week! I’ll have to get a copy of the “Hold your Plums” CD.

The question and answer session was good, until some fella asked Joe Royle a loaded question "Joe, would any one of your teams have been beaten 7-0 by Arsenal?" It was a clear pop at Moyes. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate that some people aren't happy with Moyes, but there's a time and a place to grill him and it's not at one of those do's where everyone’s there to have a good time. And in all fairness, he didn’t have to come either, did he? I don’t remember Walter Smith coming to one of the Adelphi do’s. So on the night, I thought he should have been just left be. Joe though as always had something to say on the matter and handled the question well.

Regardless of what he was doing there, I thoroughly enjoyed booing the red that stood up. But whether he’s come as “a friend” and paid £50 or not, I reserve my right to freedom of speech and if I want to boo, I’ll boo!. In all fairness though, the lad took it on the chin. Took a photo of me Uncle with Big Joe – he asked me do I look pissed? I said no, but to be honest, he looked rotten. It was great to see Alex Young back in good health, although he got off early for that reason I assume and Billy Bingham came across as quite a nice bloke. And fair play to Moyes bidding £200 for McFadden’s shirt – in all fairness, it’s not much money probably, for him, but nevertheless, it was all for a good cause.

Well done Brian Snagg for organising a great night! I can’t wait for the Hall of Fame do now! (Nick Hughes)

* Dear Editor, I was present at the Magnificent Seven evening at the Adelphi and it is always a pleasure to be in the presence of Blue greatness, and there was definite some Great Blues in the Adelphi on Wednesday Evening.

Where I do take exception though is the fact that I spent £50, to listen to a racist comic, a singer doing Stylistics numbers (what the hell was that all about), and limited speeches of who I turned up to see, my Everton heroes.

At least half an hour of the night was took up by auctions. I realise that the money raised (well over a £1000, by my estimation) will be going to Alder Hey Hospital, but I thought the organisers were pushing it a bit auctioning of James McFadden's shirt, (that was the tenth auction item)when the bidding opened at a fiver, not good, and embarrassing.

Well played to David Moyes however who took questions unvetted, though I did feel a bit embarrassed for him and the other guest at some of the antics of the audience, a lot of whom were worse for wear. A good night however, great guests, but spoiled by poor organisation. Great to see the Alex Young looking so fit and well (who I may add was never given the chance to speak), but he made my night !! * Dear Kipper, Yes - it was a fantastic night and a great atmosphere. Full marks to David Moyes for turning up and his excellent speech praising our club traditions and how we look after our own - more than any other club. (Bit sad he had to buy back the McFadden signed shirt himself!)

Westy looked well and it was great to see him enjoying his sterling performance against Chelsea in 68 on the big screen. For me the stars were Billy Bingham and big Joe Royle who stayed to the bitter end, putting up with the drunken ramblings of attendees always with a smile and a kind word. The Golden Vision seemed above it all but was still generous with his time and signing autographs. The comedian was weak and marginally racist / sexist but I thought BB did a great job - a real pro and a true blue. The minutes silence was also very touching. I guess the only question I had was how much money was made on the night and where did it all go?

30+ tables (400 people?) @ £50 a throw and (say) another £500 from the raffle = over £20,000. Obviously there will a big slice for the Adelphi, other expenses and money for the "turns" but just how much was left and where does it all go. (Not a criticism - just a question - but I think there is a need for a bit more tranparency?)

Anyway - a great night and thanks to all concerned! (Paul Tandy)
