Ross and Roy Score For Everton

Everton Rezzies beat Villa 2-1 to record their first win of the season. A crowd of 1,225 saw new-boys Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi start at a windy Widnes.

Magaye Gueye provided some nice touches after being out with a broken toe. The left winger laid on a good pass to Ross Barkley, who scored with a shot from about 20 yards out.

The second goal came after Mucha throw the ball out quickly to Gueye who motored on the counter attack. He slipped in Royston, who showed his class by passing the ball home. The Dutchman put in a few tasty tackles and after the goal looked more confident.

Denis looked a bit cumbersome and laboured at time, but in the second half showed some confidence and close control with an overhead kick which went over the crossbar.

Everton had more chances to get a third goal with Gueye, Drenthe and Stracqualursi going close. Mustafi and Nsiala did well at the heart of the Everton defence.

Vellios was missing from the side. Is this an indication that the Greek striker will be starting on Saturday or is this another injury we don't know about?

EVERTON: Mucha, Browning, Mustafi, Nsiala, Garbutt, Baxter, Barkley, Gueye, Drenthe, Stracqualursi, McAleny.

Bench: Bidwell (86m for Gueye), Forshaw (75m for McAleny), Orenuga (63m for Drenthe), Davies, Hope.

Good game. First I've been to at the Stobart. I was quite impressed with all the kids especially the number 5 cracking left foot and really read the game well. Thought Denis looks a handful, maybe another unpolished diamond. Time will tell. Deffo not the next Brett Angell as I heard muttered behind me!

I agree about Drenthe. Would not call him narky, just a bit over committed. Bit of a mini version of Big Dunc. I get the impression he was trying to put on a show and he is for sure lively. If he calms down a bit and keeps the commitment to get involved in anything he could be a gem. Denis however looked well off the pace so the jury is out on him.

Drenthe looked lively but is definately a bit of a narky bugger - the yellow card for his little scuffle would have been red in the premier. He needs to settle down and not run round like he wants to fight somebody - Denis was quiet but both players improved as the game went on. They might turn out as great finds or crap.
