When I signed
on to Blue Kipper you asked me to tell you about my first Everton game and,
believe me, at my age that's a hard one to answer. The first trip to God's
country was with me Dad to see the reserves playing Bury reserves, we won
2-0 so that was me pointed in the right direction for the rest of my life.
As much as I've tried I can't remember the first big game that I went to but
I'll try to recollect some memories. I was in the boy's pen for a cup-tie
against 'Spurs and we won on an Eddie Wainright penalty. I remember the great
T.G.Jones calmly heading the ball back to Ted Sagar against Stoke City. The
only thing was Sagar was coming for the ball and it ended up an O.G. The crowd
went deathly quiet and I'm sure I heard Sagar say"Hey,Tommy, try not
to do that again" or words to that effect. I recall sagging school on
a Wednesday afternoon to see a cup replay against Leyton Orient (we drew 1-1
down there) and we got battered 3-1. I also sagged school to see us hammer
Brentford 6-1. That was when we scored 20 goals in three games!!!! Derby 6-2,
Brentford and then Plymouth 8-4. Millions of memories come to mind when you
get down to thinking about them and I wouldn't swap one of them (even the
bad ones). But if you can bear with me, I would like to relate the best of
them. Everton versus Man.United in the cup (early 50's??). They had Cockburn,
Carey, Chilton, Rowley, Mitten, etc.a great team. BUT we had the greatest
man that ever wore the Royal Blue, Dave Hickson, and he scored the winning
goal despite being covered in blood from a head injury. He played the whole
second half holding a sponge to cover the gash over his eye and all this happened
after he had fought with the trainer and the ref to stay on the pitch to help
the team. I hope you read this, Dunc. Another wonderful one for me was beating
Fulham 4-1 (I was in the paddock for this one)to win the league for the first
time since the war. And what about the '66 Cup Final ????? I hope I didn't
go on too long but before I close I've got to mention one more wonderful Goodison
moment. In October(2000) I went home from Canada and while at the match against
Southampton got me photo took and it showed up in Joggers Snapshots. Thanks
for everything. Keep up the good work.

Can
anyone recall this great goal?
Leeds V Everton 1968/69 season. 23rd. Nov. 1968.
Everton: West, Wright, Brown, Kendall, Labone, Harvey, Husband, Ball, Royle, Hurst, Morrissey.
This game will
always stick in my mind at Elland road against a great Leeds side Bremner, Giles,
Lorrimer etc, My older Brother took me with his mates over the Pennines, no
M62 then. I was only 13 yrs old Eveton were on an unbeaten run Ball,Harvey, and
Kendall say no more. The Everton away following was fantastic, the days when
following them home and away was affordable to everyone.
We lost 2-1, but what sticks in my mind was Evertons goal by a certain Joe Royle
in front of the travelling away fans, it was on match of the day that evening.
It was a freekick chipped in delicately from the edge of the penalty area by
Alan Ball that appeared to be harmlessly going to land in Gary Sprakes hands
about waist high when a certain Joe Royle dived superbly horizontally to deftly
glance the ball off the back of his head over the stunned Leeds keeper's shoulder
into the net. It must have been a training ground exercise executed to perfection.
They did not have goal of the season then did they? It will always stick in
my mind as the best executed goal I ever seen. We returned home through the
pea soup fog to just get back to watch it on M O T D
Mark (29/01/01).
F.A. Cup Final 18th May 1968 Everton 0 v 1 West Brom
Everton: West, Wright, Wilson, Kendall, Labone, Harvey, Husband, Ball, Royle, Hurst, Morrissey
I followed the Blues right through the late sixties, seventies and eighties. Then I got the traveling bug. With the cops, Jackson the tailor, and my ex missus after me, I decided It was time to see the world. For some strange reason the one game that stands out, was one we lost. The '68 Cup Final against West Brom. Me and my mate bunked the train to London, bunked in Wembley and were all ready to see the Toffee's win the Cup.
We absolutely battered them. Ball, Harvey, Kendall, Royle. Everyone played out of their shirts. I remember Husband missed a header early on and it was only a matter of time before we grabbed a few goals. Well, it wasn't to be. When Astle scored, I sat down on the steps and cried like a baby. I knew it was one of them days. My most vivid memory is the sight of the Everton players dropping to their knees, some of them crying, at the sound of the final whistle. They played their hearts out. A lot of them only kids at the time and ended up losing. What a sickener. I'll never forget that game. Thanks. Fitzy Hawaii (07/11/00)
