Former Everton and England defender 32-years old Michael Ball has been fined £6,000 by the Football Association for sending homophobic Tweets to Coronation Street actor Anthony Cotton. He said "That f***ing queer. Get back to your sewing machine in Corrie, you moaning b******." He posted on Twitter during Cotton's appearance on I'm A Celebrity last November. He's also been sacked by Leicester City who he joined last August, though that apparently has nothing to do with the Tweet.
What a sad end for a player we all once thought would become a big name in the game. After he left us he joined Glasgow Rangers, PSV Eindhoven and Manchester City but he never realised his initial promise.
It was a stupid, offensive and completely unacceptable thing for Ball to do and every bit as bad as racism. These days nobody cares about someone's sexuality. It's a private matter. So what does a non-football Tweet have to do with the Football Association? How can they fine someone for something that has nothing to do with football? Isn't this an unwarranted intrusion? Should Ball cough up or defy the FA?
What do you think?
