Remember the scene?
FA Cup semi-final 1977 against the redshite at Maine Road (semi-finals should not be played at Wembley). With the score at 2-2, in the last minute Ronnie Goodlass dances down the left wing, he crosses and Bryan Hamilton bundles the ball over the line.
We've won, the shite are distraught, there is no way back, we are in the FA Cup Final. But no, wait a minute, the ref has disallowed the goal - what for? Nothing. Well it saved an appeal to the FA by the redshite.
Yes the goal was disallowed and we lost the replay.
Referee Clive Thomas subsequently admitted that he got it wrong! Too late.
How ironic then, on FA Cup Semi-Final week, that Clive Thomas should crawl from under a stone and comment on the current state of refereeing in the Premiership.
Cheat and Ex-World Cup referee Clive Thomas said: 'I've lost faith in referees. I think refs are missing things.'
Can you believe it? After a career riddled with controversy!
But Phil Dorward, of Premier League and Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL), believes standards are rising.
PGMOL Phil retorted: 'Clive is entitled to his opinion but the facts point in the opposite direction.'
Let us pray that Saturday's referee, Howard Webb, has not also slept with the devil.
Crawl back under your stone Clive.
