Is Big Vic A Super Sub?

Victor Anichebe wants to ditch the 'super sub' tag at Everton (we did not know he had got the tag) but is happy to keep contributing from the bench for now.

All four of Big Vic's Premier League goals this season have come as a substitute, he also holds the record for the number of appearances as Everton substitute playing 77 times. He first gained a reputation as an impact player with his exploits in the UEFA Cup campaign of 2007-08.

But now Big Vic says the time has come to deliver and earn a starting role.

Big Vic said: 'I can't rubbish the super-sub tag, I always seem to get a goal or something.'

'Whether it's coming off the bench or starting games, I'm not really bothered to be honest, but there will come a time when I'll have to start playing consecutive games all the time, not just coming in off the bench.'

'I've been troubled with injuries here and there, so it does limit the time I've had on the pitch. But Everton are great, they've managed me well and hopefully they can get me playing a handful of games from the start.'

'It's not that I'm injury-prone or anything like that, it's just that I've been out for a while, come back, been out again and then we've had a lot of games recently so it stops the strengthening programmes that you can do.'

'But hopefully now we've got some games out the way and I can start doing more. But as long as the team is winning, I can do my bit whenever. That's the main thing.'

We'll be seeing plenty more of Big Vic as he is only just into his four year contract.

Would you have Big Vic in your starting line-up, maybe taking Timmy's place and pushing up alongside Jelly?

I support everyone who turns out for us. I don't boo Vic, but at the same time I don't rate him. For some reason he has the bigger impact from the bench, so first choice starter? Nope, not right now. If he's not happy with that, send him packing. Prefer Straq and Vellios as attacking options anyway. If he was happy to stay as the self-proclaimed 'super-sub' then all the better. I believe we should play the in form players so if he keeps doing it from as a sub then he will warrant a start, but I still feel we have better options up front (the aforementioned and of course the Jelly-man). When, and if, he gets his chance starting a run of game then I will back him, but don't think it will work for him (because if we're being honest with ourselves, he isn't good enough).

Some comments are a bit harsh, but I'd have to say no at this stage. I think Velios has shown more promise in terms of movement and commitment and bemused as to why we aren't seeing Ross on the bench and getting outings instead of being played in this obscure US competition.

Ian, Steve and both Chris', what you're all failing to realise is there is a difference between supporting a player and being honest about lack of talent and/or attitude. I will support Victor or any other Everton player when they come onto the pitch but if they play badly or their attitude stinks then I am more than entitled to my opinion and I'm certainly not less of an Everton supporter for doing so.

I agree with Ian (Walton), Steve (Kirkby) and Chris (Co Durham). The lad gets more stick than anyone I've experienced by "some" fans and now the same fans complain he didn't celebrate with them. When he plays centre forward (his position) he scores goals. The fact he plays 90% out of position doesn't help him. Give the lad a break and support ALL in Royal Blue.

Totally agree with Chris (18). In times when we need to behind the lads when we are marching forward you do get some morons moaning about something. Probably forgot him equalizing against Villa (away) getting the winner at WBA (away) getting the 4 points which helped us go above the redshite. Went to the City (away) game last season and watched him wreck them (played up front) the crowd were going mad for him. I couldn't give a toss how he celebrates his goals as long he keeps putting them in, I wonder how many off the whingers want to kick him out if he gets the winner in the semi? Give the lad a break and get behind him. Moyes will get the best out of him.

Well said Ian from walton, it's a disgrace the way some people on here slag the lads off, granted he hasn't had the best spell at Everton but a huge portion of that has been spent on the sick list, the lad has NEVER had a sustained full season, how any of you can come to the ultimatum that he is not good enough to wear an Everton shirt when, a) he is still young (only 23) b) has not yet been able to get a full season under his belt without injury c) has never been given the chance to show off, is quite frankly embarassing, I have criticised Anichebe in the past but the way some of you go on is just terrible, I sincerely hope he doesn't read supposed fan pages such as this as it's clear it's full of total numpties that have no clue when potential is right in front of them.

He's not good enough and carries a big attitude as if the world owes him something. Hopefully someone like WBA will give us 3m for him. Thats probably way over priced

I think the lad has got qualities, but he just hasn't got it right between the ears. Talking about coming off the bench and making an impact, he took his goal well, but other than that his work rate is appauling he just walks around the pitch looking bored. He couldnt even be arsed celebrating his goal FFS!

His "celebration" after scoring was a response to the booing he got when he came on. Moyes has always had faith in Vic and this year the lad has started to repay that faith. He is coming on and scoring goals. Lets get behind him for the rest of the season at least.

Dave you must be drunk. The best big Vic could ever achieve is as a sub for Everton because he is not good enough to be in any other Premier League side.

If he could score, he will get opportunity to start. Now I think hes better than Cahill

Has a long way to go yet to prove he is worthy of a starting spot

If he's happy to play as a sub then he should stay otherwise send him on his way...

He should stay as a sub for the rest of the season. It's where he has been most effective. He still goes down to easily and even more annoyingly, he stays on the deck for eternity. I am hoping Barkley will be Tim's successor. Next season will hopefully give young Ross more time on the pitch. I just can't ever see Big Vic ever being more than a fringe player.

You just need to look at his celebration for the goal against WBA on the weekend. No connection with the fans or the team, always with the attitude and serverly misplaced high regard for himself. I struggle to see any redeeming qualities in this lad, yeah he is big and strong but there is no desire to use it the Everton way.

Lot of negative people on this site, support him he's trying for our club. The fans have never liked him, the echo crucified him & he's been out with injury for a huge part of his career. Some of you "fans" are absolutely embarrassing!

What exactly has Anichebe done to warrant a starting position? Over the years he's had plenty of opportunites but failed to deliver. yes he's got a couple of goals and yes he shows glimpses of talent but overall he's a passenger. He either needs to buck his ideas up or go.

Haha best opening comment ever. If he stopped sulking, ran his arse of instead of sitting on it maybe a very slim chance. Doesn't do nearly enough for the team.

To be honest I don't rate him, I never have, he's too lightweight and goes down quicker than Jordan. I'd like him to get a few goals towards the end of the season and then sell him to Liverpool for £40 Million or £45 Million and Andy Carroll.

I actually like Vic and see him as a viable replacement for Timmy as he gets older. I know he has had some stick from fans but I do believe he can come though for us. Near enough every time he has played over the past few months he has done well. Would like to see him up the middle more like on Saturday and not stuck out wide

Just because Anichebe has scored a few goals this season, this doesn't give him the right to even think he is good enough for a starting place, let alone a place on the bench, not good enough to wear the Everton shirt.

Did anyone else notice the way he celebrated his goal on Saturday. It looked like a dismissive wave to everyone just before he was mobbed by teammates. Personally, he would never be in my starting line even if we only had ten fit players. He's utter shite.
