Baines Injury Worry For Everton
Bookmark and Share

Leighton Baines is out of the England's squad for tomorrow night's friendly with Wales after picking up a hamstring injury in training.

Bainesy suffered the problem on Sunday, and has now returned to Finch Farm for further assessment ahead of Everton's game with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Everton will hope that the 26-year-old left back injury is not that bad. If he is ruled out it will need David Moyes to pick a different left back for the first time in over a season, as Bainesy played in every minute of Everton's Premier League campaign last season.

The choices are young reserve left back Luke Garbutt, or new signing Royston Drenthe, who has played left back for Feyenoord, Tony Hibbert, Phil Neville, or Sylvain Distin. Who would you pick?

Dave in County Durham my sentiments exactly, I too was wondering if we would get any compo as all the so called big teams do when their players are injured. I think 90% of Evertonians probably agree with you on the point of not caring how England get on, just how our players are doing as to all of us Everton are far more important thatn England. Big Dave in Beaconsfield as much as we'd all love that idea to work the fact is for most pro's playing for their country is the biggest honour and if they thought joining a certain club would prevent them from doing it then they'd probably not join. As for LB 'd play Nev and Drenthe LM, nev could use his experience in helping Drenthe out, give him orders on the pitch tell him what positions to take up etc., it could help Drenthe's transition into the league.

Any time Hibbert has played left back he puts in better crosses than when he's at right back. So give him a go. He always has Drenthe to get back if he is caught out.

Give Garbutt or Mustafi a run out. We need to see if they are good enough.

So are the FA going to pay us the £500k they paid the red shite when Stevie Wee got injured? And an extra £500K because Bainsey is twice as good. I doubt it. You never see our manager pulling our players out with injuries, like many others do, and this is the thanks we get. I know I'll get slated for this, but unless there is an Evertonian playing, I dont care if England win or lose, in fact it's quite funny to see them lose. Club over country any day for me. COYB IMWT.

I personally would like to see Drenthe in his position of choice, LM with Nev LB and Bily in his natural position CM. Bily can be our new #10 if he is in his position of choice. Come on DM start playing our players in their natural positions.

Distin has the pace to cope with N'Zogbia. Phil's experience will make up for lack of pace to some extent but then Distin has been around a bit too. Putting Drenthe in defence for his debut could backfire spectacularly. Better to start him on the wing or coming off the bench. I look forward to seeing what damage he can do to the opposition. We need his pace to try and create things, especially for Big Den who I guess will be starting now Vic is out.

Can we ban all our lads playing for national teams. The number of injuries is plain ridiculous. From Big Nev's ankle injury in 1986 - which cost us the double incidentally - to Young Ross' broken leg last year, every international break causes problems. And now Bainesy. Add in the fact our boys get tapped-up, an immediate ban is the only answer.

I think we have got to remember who is on the wing for Villa, N'zogbia. So really can't see Drenthe or Distin playing there. Phil Neville with Drenthe in front of him is a no brainer for me.

Distin is not the option. It's his worst position. I'd probably go with Neville.

I think Phil is the only choice. Granted he hasn't got the pace or passing of Baines but defensively he is sound and for me represents the safest option.

So Josh, you're suggesting playing Neville as a wing back? I'd rather not tbh...

Terrible news. Hamstrings take weeks to cure. Neville as replacement every time, he never lets us down.

I would start with Drenthe and encourage him to go forward. I would have Heitinga as a defensive mid-fielder dropping back as Drenthe goes forward and Distan covers for Drenthe.

352, Howard, Heitinga, Jags, Distin, Roy, Pip, Rod, Felli, Ross (behind front two), Louis, Denis!

I'd give that Drenthe a run out. oOly got him for a year. Might as well use him whilst he's there. No point in trying to find a replacement for Bainesy because there isnt a left back in england as good as him, possibly best in the world.

I would put Phil Neville there. He has played there many times throughout his career, I wouldn't play Drenthe just yet we will probably see him come on in a for the last 15 minutes in the next couple of games to get a feel for the league.

I'd go with Distin at LB with Jags and Johnny in the middle but I reckon Moyes wiil go with Hibbert RB and Neville LB... meaning our full backs will offer little going forward...

Drenthe for me. Probably not where he wants to play in his first game or the club, but needs must as I'd like to keep the shape of the rest of the squad. Besides, he's pacey and likes getting forward anyway, so with any luck, we won't even realise our Bainsey is missing!!
