Everton legend Kevin Sheedy has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
The 52-year-old, who is currently a youth coach at the academy at Finch Farm will undergo surgery later this week.
Sheeds was a star in the all conquering trophy winning Everton team of the 80's, making 369 appearances scoring 97 goals.
Sheeds said: "It's not ideal but I have to remain positive. After a period of rehabilitation I will return to my coaching role at Everton.
"There is a history in the family. It's so important that people don't ignore the early signs and symptoms and don't be afraid to consult a GP."

I went on Holiday with Kevin back in the 70s. We met on a school trip to holland. Never forget it and I will never forget him. My prayers are with you old pal. Good luck

These days we hear many times 'He has a wand of a left foot', well this guy had a magical wand of a left foot.
I remember the penalties, the goalie should have had a stool to sit on coz he was never getting there.

I'm 52, and I have a form of Leukaemia, and the messages from Sheeds are massively important: identifying illnesses early, and dealing with them positively. It's advice that we all need to take on board. Speedy recovery, Sheeds, still my favourite all-time outfield player.
