'Worst Ever' Everton XI?

Off The Post have listed what they consider to be the Top Ten worst ever signings for Everton in the Premiership.

The list makes interesting reading and few would disagree with the No.1!

10. Marco Materazzi
Although Everton were actually able to make a profit on the Italian, his time in England was not a success. Four red cards in his 27 games did not exactly help matters, and he was sold after just one season. He then went and won the World Cup five years later, and Everton fans wondered how that could be the same player.

9. Li Weifeng
Although only a loan move, Weifeng's arrival in England was ridiculous, as he had clearly been recruited in an effort to promote the club's brand in, coming shortly after their sponsorship deal with Chang beer. The Chinese defender played just one game for the club, looked out of his depth and promptly returned to China after a season.

8. Daniel Amokachi
Amokachi might have been a bit of a Premier League legend, but he was never actually that successful for Everton. After Mike Walker had paid £3million for the Nigerian in 1994, he played just over 40 league games in three years before moving to Turkey. Best thing about him? Putting his surname into Lady Gaga's Paparazzi (as in Amo... Amokachi). It's addictive.

7. Stephen Hughes
Hughes had been seen as a promising young talent at Arsenal and although he had not cemented a place in the Gunners' first team, the £3million shelled out by Everton seemed money well spent. Hughes lasted just 16 months on Merseyside before Everton released him on a free transfer, and his career never really got back on track. He retired in 2009 aged 32, after playing for Walsall.

6. Ibrahima Bakayoko
Championship Manager hero, but not Everton hero. He impressed enough at Montpellier for Walter Smith to pay £4.5million for his services, but never made his mark on Merseyside. The Ivorian scored just four times, and was sold to Marseille after one season in England. Impressively, Everton managed to get £4million for a player dubbed 'Baka-joke-o'.

5. Steve Simonsen
After being released by Nottingham Forest, Simonsen joined Tranmere, and made the short trip to Goodison for £3.3million, a British record for a goalkeeper at the time. The keeper didn't even make an appearance in his first season, and although he stayed at Everton for six years only made 35 appearances in all competitions. He was finally released in 2004.

4. James Beattie
Beattie had impressed at Southampton before joining Everton for £6million, but he had never really looked like an England prospect (which, given the price tag, he really ought to have been). He made 86 appearances over three seasons, but the majority of these were from the substitutes' bench. Beattie had promised much, but delivered very little.

3. Slaven Bilic
He might get credit for his prowess at international management, but after a good spell at West Ham, Bilic turned into one of Everton's worst Premier League players. Signed for (the not inconsiderable amount of) £4.5million, Bilic was seemingly booked in just about all of his games during his first season, missing five games through suspension. After two seasons of underperformance Everton tried to offload the defender on a free, but with no takers Bilic continued to get paid £27,000 per week by Everton while living in Zagreb and playing only for Croatia. The club was eventually forced to pay Bilic off with £1million to leave the club.

2. Alex Njarko
A sorry tale. Nyarko was massively overvalued by Everton, who paid Lens £4.5million and handed the player a five-year contract. He played 33 times in four seasons, scored one goal and was the subject of a protest by a fan who ran onto the pitch to essentially tell Nyarko that he was sh*t. Nyarko was substituted and then immediately asked to leave the club, going on two loan spells that were also unsuccessful.

1. Per Kroldrup
Described as one of the worst transfers in the English game, Denmark defender Kroldrup moved to Everton from Udinese for £5million in 2005. He cost the club £5million per appearance, as he played just once against Aston Villa. The defender admitted that he simply couldn't cope with the pace and intensity of the Premier League, but one would have thought that Everton scouts might just have sourced that information in advance.

Who has been left out of the Top Ten all-time worst Everton Premiership signings?

Who would be in THE all-time worst Top Ten? Alan Biley, Rod Belfitt, Benie Wright, Stephan Rhen or Glen Keeley?

What do you think?

Francis Jeffers' second spell? He came back on loan for 18 games only to be sent back for a bust-up with Moyes. And what about the comical signings of legends Gascoigne and Ginola? Fun to get on the back of your shirt, but not to watch. Also, I just heard Jesper Blomqvist breathe a sigh of relief. I can't bring myself to mention a certain Scot's second spell that ended very recently.

After the 95/96 season things were looking up for us. We needed a pacy goalscorer to play off Big Dunc. Enter Nick Barmby...of course. Shit from the start then went to the rezzies. Three years later decides to put his boots on again and then committed a mortal sin. I hated him from the start.

Which armchair / moron / the League began with the birth of the Premier League helmet did this list please? 1. Marco Materazzi was a class act, anyone who actually watched him would agree. Referees had it in for him after his first red, remember the dive from Coventry's Darren Huckerby? Materazzi was yards away from him but the ref didn't hesitate!! Will they say the same thing about some of the class acts in our current crop in ten years time? 2. Daniel Amokachi - The Only thing I need to mention is that last piece of silverware we won. Were it not for Amo deciding to sub himself onto the pitch at Elland Road we'd never have made it to the 95 Final. Go support LFC / Man Utd / Spurs or whatever snide outfit you claim to support yer muppets!

Marco Matterazzi and Slaven Bilic were class players, are you having a laugh?? Matterazzi sold to raise funds but class when he played and still young at the time. Bilic unlucky with injuries... but when he played "you'll never beat the Bilic" I believe Li Weifeng came as a surprise to everyone as Li Tie was part of a sponsorship deal but they threw Weifeng in without us knowing! ? Lets face it.. we have had some awful players the last 20 years... would any of our top ten worst players be the same? John Spencer is the one of the worst I have ever seen in a blue shirt. Kevin Langley??

Everton's "Worst Ever"X1,or alternatively known as "Crimewatch"First one for me had to be the Walsall shot putter,Bernie Wright, now this signing has to be up there with the Roswell Incident, scientists could have spent many an hour deciphering this centre forwards intentions and still non the wiser, definitely one of many kept under lock and key at the Everton X-Files Bureau.Next up wee Joe Harper, comparisons can be made with 80's toy "Stretch Armstrong"except this version couldn't flex his ability on the pitch, and was removed to make way for the Cabbage Patch variety, leading me nicely, onto Mr.Alan Biley, one of Howards Magnificent Seven, arrived with a smile that soon slid,i think something was lost in translation with this purchase,as i had my doubts that it was actually chirpy cockney singer/actor Joe Brown,we got instead and Joe's agent at the time told him to remain incognito as bookings are slow and any job will do at this time.Along came Madar, the french Jackie Pallo,if this fella was made of L'escargot and onion soup he'd devour himself dry,a maverick with plenty of names, all assembled after that sitter at Anfield-Au Revoir.Gary Stevens's replacement,Neil McDonald, had the mobility and movement of a Sumo wrestler enjoying his 11th year of retirement, was not up to the task and it was strikingly obvious.Goalkeeper Richard Wright and staying on the Japanese theme,we was not aware at the time of this enticement that our safe hands had an interest in Kamikaze, thought it was a bit unprofessional that he never wore a Rising Sun bandana at the press conference to give us a flavour of what to expect,Banzai and soon he's throwing himself out of the attic, always an indicator there's a confidence issue surfacing.Early 70's Joe Harper came south,an early model patent of the toy that was "Stretch Armstrong"except this version only expanded our imagination,by questioning what is the Number 9's purpose. It's as good a talking point discussing the players that did not shape up as opposed to the one's you instantly clamour for, after all love em or not, they've been the nuts and bolts also, but maybe slightly more corrosive.

Amo, I loved him, got us through the Semi`s against Spurs and we went on to be the Only team to beat Utd in a Final during the 90`s.... A few names, Mickey Thomas, Terry Curren, Vinny Samways, Davy Johnson 2nd spell at Everton, Glen Keely ranks as one of the worst for me...As does Earl Barrett... Jim Pearson, O`h man the list is endless...

Bit arl arse Amo being there 1995 Semi Final anyone?? Bakayoko was shite but 2 out of the 4 goals he scored came in a 2-1 win at Ewood Park which helped keep us up. But he should be on the list. What about Mikel Madar? Remember that miss at Anfield? when we were 1-0 up and he missed an open goal, the shite went down the other end and equalised. And me Ma saw him in Toys "R" Us and said he stunk of bo. Richard Wright was shite, Earl Barrett, Brett Angel? Theres been quite a lot hasnt there haha

Marc Hottiger must be one of the worst signigs ever

Materazzi was class, shouldn't be there. Weifung came in because of Keijan, not Chang (it's anal, but ah well) Amokachi being on there is a joke. Not a great player, true. But a hero, heroes should not be on this list. Where is Sandro Piss-tone? The fact we finished 4th with him was th biggest part of the achievement. Angell? Claus the Wardrobe? But why oh why is Richard Wright not here. £4.5 million in total, remember when he nearly let the ball bounce over his head at Charlton? He really was shit!
John, Walton, 9:24 AM 4/07/2012

How can Marco Materazzi be on there..... Everyone could see the young lad (at the time) had all the talent to be a top class player, as he proved to be, winning countless Serie A titles, Champo League and a World Cup!! He just lacked discipline, but as a boy I remember his Cruyff turns when faking a back pass to the keeper, putting CF's on their ass!! #Talent

I agree with Rich150 Earl Barret, at the time we reckoned he must have been the managers illegitimate son because he was certainly not a footballer. Bernie Wright gets a vote as does Geoff Nulty.

At least Beattie and Amo scored a few important goals - Brett Angel anyone?

How can Amokachi be on there and Earl Barrett not - the very worst player in my book - shocking!
