Big Nev On Team Selection

Neville Southall believes that David Moyes' decision to rest Tim Howard for Tuesday night's Capital One Cup defeat at Leeds was "pointless".

Big Nev has revealed how he used to have rows with club management if they ever tried to leave him out of the side.

Tim Howard is closing in on Big Nev's record of 212 consecutive league games, having made 189 consecutive league appearances for Everton, a run stretching back to September 2007.

Big Nev said:
"I hated missing games. I used to have a row with Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall if they ever wanted to leave me out, because you'd lose a bit of momentum. I liked to stay in the zone."

"When I looked at the game against Leeds on TV I was looking to see if it was Tim playing, then thinking: 'Why have they left him out?' It's pointless. Outfield players I can understand, but once a goalkeeper gets in that groove you want to leave him in there."

"If you're No. 1, you're No. 1 and it's up to you to play yourself out of that position. I hated missing any game, even a Simod Cup tie against Millwall with 3,000 inside Goodison because I was looking forward to playing in a young team. I think Howard Kendall left me out because he didn't want to be in the competition anyway!"

"Tim's a good goalkeeper. His distribution could be better. Sometimes he kicks it too high and too far, which is okay when you've got Fellaini on the end of it but not always, but other than that he's a very good keeper."

"I think he's done well and he's improved since he's been at the club."

As it happens, Mucha had a decent game on the night but maybe having Tim in the sticks may have given the defence more confidence. It was the outfield players and Moyesy's team selection which let us down. What do you think?

Big Nev is the greatest keeper ever! He may have moved rubbish for a while! However never talks rubbish! Go and listen to the man, he is straight talking, gives his take & does not give a damn! He is adored! I would say him and Ferguson are loved above all & christ there are many great legends!

Big Nev is dead right. But why the hell so many unnecessary and rash changes to the outfield players? Tinkering is one thing changing over half the team is quite another. Glaring from the touchline and doing naff all before its all too late is a Moyes weakness. He remains a good but flawed manager.

No, Im afraid Blah & Tony are clearly talking SHITE here not Big Nev !!! How can you say Mucha is a novice and when was the last time Howard got injured ? You two sound like a pair of Kopites, don't you remember the performance of Mucha last season in this competition ? What was the point of playing a player who has made his intentions this season and last season to move on to pastures new...

The problem was Junior. Plain and simple. I'd seen the lad pre-season and he looked decent, but he was out of his depth against leeds. He offered nothing to the team IMHO. We should've approached this game the same way we did orient, if it aint broke......

Nev is the greatest goalkeeper I have ever seen. But now he's retired he doesn't half talk some shite.

Playing a team of strangers who had never played together before is what killed us. We needed a batlling team to start the game especially in MF not 2 lightweight (but skillfull) youngsters.

Rubbish, what a narrow minded view from the perspective of a number one keeper, its about taking the opportunity to give others a chance. When TH gets injured you don't want a novice who has sat on the bench for 3 years coming in for a big match, you want someone with experience, recent match time and someone who is given an opportunity to challenge the establshed number one.

Big Nev is spot on. I suppose there is a chance of injury but it makes little sense resting the keeper. Playing Fellaini as a defensive midfielder first half when he's been amazing as an attacking midfielder this season is what killed us.
