On Saturday Blues keeper Tim Howard surpassed Neville Southall's record of appearances in goal in the Premier League era.

Tim made his 208th appearance against Blackburn on Saturday, 5 years after he signed permanently from Manure.

Tim Howard said: "I didn't know that, it's fantastic, Southall set the benchmark here for goalkeepers and for all players because he's got so many records. Those are always nice things but something you put on the back-burner. I don't keep up with stats and things like that, I try to keep focused on the now, but it's really nice to hear. Old players like me will hang on anything. I know what he meant to this club so it's always nice to use him as a marker and try to catch that."

Howard has a long way to go before he beats Southall's overall appearance record, which stands at 578 starts.

Paul has absolutely no idea what he was talking about. All this theory based on a back-pass rule. Ha ha. Hopefully, Tim Howard might actually catch a ball one day. He couldn't carry Neville's jockstrap.

Paul - No way on this earth is Howard even 1/2 as good as Southall was in his prime.

As soon as the back pass rule was introduced, we and lpool haven't won the league. Watched a few DVDs of the 80's the other day and the amount if back passes to Neville was incredible. But so to were mssrs lawrenson and hanson. Can't take footy seriously from that era. Pitches were crap and Neville picking up the ball every 3 mins was embarrassing. Howard is a better keeper every time. Don't get me started on the legality of Dixies "goals".

I'm sadly anchored in my past, best days, well behind me but Nev was in his day a different class, just like the club was and still can be. I hope Tim Howard gets close to Nevilles esteem at Goodison Park, and who knows what the future holds -it can only get better.

Tim, you are a star mate, worth a goal a game for us.
