Is Royston A Luxury?

So far, this Everton season has been dire, undoubtedly the worst in Moyesy's near 10 year reign to date. One of the few shining lights, alright shimmering light has been Royston Drenthe.

Rolls Royston is a fans player, exciting, like to attack, beats a man with ease, quick and with an eye for goal. The prefect ingredients you would think? Not for Moyesy, for Defensive Dave Royston does not do enough of the run of the mill stuff, tackling, tracking back, not getting caught with the ball etc.

So we find Royston as now ensconced on the bench and coming on as an impact player, usually when we are in the shit. 6 starts and 2 goals is a good return for a winger, yet it is still not good enough.

Stats perhaps show why? Rolls Roy is best at the club in dribbling, crossing, accuracy of shooting and he is 4th in the Premiership League of assists by winger with 5, his pass completion is also the best at Everton.

We know where he goes wrong. Worst at the club at tackling, losing the ball and for intercepting a pass by the opposition.

Is Real Madrid and Everton star Royston Drenthe a luxury or should he be first on the team sheet?

I only ever feel like we're gonna win when Royston is on... :/

I agree that we should give Royston a start he puts the fear of god into defenders when he attacks and he lifts the fans every time he goes forward. he just needs more playing time as do some of the youngsters but will they get it.this maybe to much of an important game to gamble but we havn't got many choices. A win is the most important thing. Ed Northwich

If only Moyes would stop sulking and actually start picking our best XI in their correct positions. Yes, Drenthe is included in our best 11. He's the only player we have who looks like a pacey live-wire, all the others are one-paced (slow). Drenthe would be an excellent outlet if we actually left someone outside our own 6 yard box when defending corners.

I thought he was not starting due to him carrying an injury?? He's even done an interview stating such!! The lad is talented and full of running why anybody would think he's a luxury is absolutely beyond me.

"We need a striker......We need a striker" is all I keep hearing, but when we get a striker we ruin them by playing them alone upfront, then asking them to work like a defender. You can't have both, and playing that way killed a 30+, goal a season, man in Beattie. This is the type of player we need to inject some life into our dire, backs against the wall, football that has been endemic of Moyes entire reign. Even if we got David Villa for £4.99 (+ Free West End show tickets) he would become another man who bagged 5 a season, kill his confidence and eventually leave. Until we change our style these players will get frustrated and go, or never come in the first place. Billy took alot of crap on this site (and others) but we never played him in his proper position. You just watch him be a World beater in the next couple of years if played correctly. C'mon Everton, start to blood the youth, give players a bit more freedom, and let Royston show what he can do.

we have had little to get excited about. roy at least gives us that sense of anticipation that something could happen.put him in now, if worried about tracking back throw him in the hole behind the striker, would scare plenty of defences from there.

Roy is a must start in an everton team lacking creation. Play him behind the striker, other teams cope well enough with 4 in midfield why can't we? Because we play too deep without the ball that's why, and in the fear of getting slated we don't have a right back that can play right back. They either get sucked into the middle or are nowhere to be seen, please am I the only one seeing this. How many goals have we shed from our right hand side this season. As much as I love Cahill and he will undoubtadely go down as a legend, he's gone, and Saha too. We need a Striker and a full back desperate. The rest is down to being more positive when we haven't got the ball. Let Royston do his stuff!!

Of course he is a luxury but one we need.We have a squad full of safe dependable players that take the easy option every time,at least he offers something else even if it doesnt come off everytime.

I think he's brilliant. I love his attitude. He's fast, brash and isn't fazed by opposition. He picks the ball up and wants to attack at every opportunity. A defenders nightmare! I think we will be lucky to keep him. I just can't believe moysey isn't making the most of his services at the min, I mean nobody else is setting Goodson alight. Just saying.

Drenthe is great going forward but lacks discipline in getting back. This has nothing to do with 'defensive Davey' as you put it,a winger needs to chase back as well as get forward no matter who manages the team. He's a quality player and would bolster our squad so we should sign him up. His defensive game will improve with time, once he has got used to his duties and built up a rapport with the full backs. Compared to when he first arrived,he is getting better at tracking back but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Let's all get behind him and appreciate what he can do,the rest will come.

Put him on behind Saha as the fifth man in midfield. Hes not so good at tracking back and tackling. Id play him in the middle behind Saha he will chase them to wings into the other three felli in the middle behind him with neville on the right and Landen on the left. If it doesnt work then its Timmy time! nothing lost

On balance, I think he should be on the pitch at the moment, especially while Coleman is out. His pace is a good outlet for us, but his decision making isn't the best and he runs down blind alleys too often. It isn't just that he gives the ball away. Christ, if it was, the whole team would have to start from the bench. It's where he gives the ball away that is often the issue, and he has gifted a fair few chances to the opposition. However, he will surely only learn by being on the pitch and gaining experience. As for the tracking back thing, all wingers are expected to do that. Nani and Valencia do it for United so why shouldn't Everton players do it? Trevor Steven used to do it, and Johnny Morrissey had a fearsome reputation. The team aren't playing well and Moyes plays a huge part in that, but making up new reasons to have a dig doesn't help anyone.

Send him back now ,we don't like these flair players at everton. Mark Pembridge needs to come out of retirement he fits the bill for the way we play at the moment. Come on bill time to untie them purse strings blow off the years of dust that have built up and offer pembo a snickers and 2 packs of tangtastics per week. Saying that he may not be interested in our boring play, is scot gemmil available to come out of retirement?

R.R is a breathe of fresh air for our 1paced plod and does give us 1card to play to scare opposition (rather than make them giggle). With dross man Dave liking his players out of position.. Why not try him behind a striker so losing possession or tracking back not so costly. DOOM

Put him on instead of Louis then, push him further up the park and let him loose in the box. Eddieparkend COYB

He's a luxury i'd rather play rodwell, heitinga, neville and osman in midfield ahead of him. Now that's what i call a midfield!

A liability! We don't have the team to carry passengers. I left Villa Park appalled at his one trick pony attempts to beat a man. This current team is just not suited to him. He drops the shoulder then gets mugged and doesn't try hard enough to redeem himself. This approach then ensures the fullback behind him is nervous and hamstrung. Somebody has to do his tracking work for him. P.S. Lambert in Moyes out.

Yes he is a luxury but when he plays, the team play higher up the pitch, as his pace causes the opposition to push back. Yes, like a lot of wingers he can get caught with the ball / pass to the opposition, but FFS he is the only player we have who opposing teams look scared of at the mo. Unfortunately he doesnt fit the " defend, tackle, track back " player that Moyes loves.

I personally think he should be in the starting 11 and only haul him off if he isnt performing..How else is he going to improve?

This young player is as "Mad as a Box of frogs" but if we had a Finisher then the stats show that we would score GOALS. If we lose him to another club, (and remember The Shite are interested) then we have lost an undoubted Raw Talent. He is everything we need in a player and Moyesie Has got to stop leaving him on the bench.

Totally brainless. No discipline. His performance at Aston villa was one of the poorest performances you are ever likely to see. It shows how far back we have gone when the crowd get excited when he's comin off the bench

for me drenthe needs to play every week but in a free role behind the striker, similar role to that of van der vaart at spurs. that way he can drop back to provide link up play or use his pace to get in behind the defenders. cant have everyone tracking back defending or else we can never hit anyone on the counter attack. Lets hope moyes isnt playing him to keep him on the down-low so we can get him on a free in summer and he doesnt go to anyone else.... We can always live in hope

it's a no brainer to me, he should be in 1st name on the sheet, every opposition are scared stiff of him. pace, power, passion just hope moyes doesn't drive it out of him and away from the club

Not a cat in hells chance of staying. Mr. Negative Moyes won't see the likes of attractive attacking football at Goodison. Thats why Billy went! Given Moyes interview on Sky today, it looks like Billy was sold behind Moyes back. he wasn't happy. Watch this space, for Moyes throwing the towel in!

If we dont sign him say goodbye 2 the top 7 we are replacing r good players with average players Royston is one of our only options 2 get a goal. Everytime I have seen him we look more likely to score and attack rather than being defensive
