Rangers Throwing Up A Fans Smoke Screen

The inevitable inquest is going on a Glasgow Rangers following the transfer to Nikica Jelavic to Everton and there is also the inevitable mud-slinging.

Formally unveiled as a £6million Everton player on Thursday, Jelly set the ball rolling by insisting he never asked to leave Ibrox.

That claim was branded 'ridiculous' by the Rangers, with Operations Director Ali Russell insisting Jelavic told Ally McCoist on Monday he wanted out.

Ali said: 'I am the greatest! Nikica told Ally McCoist he wanted to move to the English Premier League, so to suggest he didn't want to leave Rangers is nonsense.'

'Nikica and indeed his family were widely quoted throughout January about playing in England and his agent also communicated the fact he wanted to achieve a lifetime ambition and test himself in the Premier League.'

'He wants to earn a starting place for Croatia at Euro 2012 and felt a move to England's top flight would help him achieve that. To suggest he was forced to leave Ibrox is just ridiculous.'

Jelly said: 'Let me clear something up. I still had two-and-a-half years left on my contract with Rangers and so, if the club said to me you are staying, I would have respected that decision.'

'I never said I am desperate to leave or that I want to leave. It is strange to hear this. Two clubs made an agreement and that is it. What can I do without the clubs' agreement?'

Ranger's owner Craig Whyte then fuelled the disagreement by saying in an open letter to supporters that the player himself forced the move.

Whyte said: 'The reality of Jelavic's departure is two-fold. One, the player wanted to leave and there is no point in trying to keep a player who no longer wants to be at Ibrox. Two, the club is simply not in a financial position to turn down offers for players which give the club a good return on its original investment.'

Jelavic defended and said: 'I never met Craig Whyte. I have never spoken with him. Why am I the bad guy? I've done my job for Rangers I think with two trophies and with many goals.'

'It was a beautiful 18 months and I won't speak against Rangers because of one man. Rangers will always have a special place in my heart.'

Who's right? Who cares? We've got Jelly and his Dad is bigger than your Dad!

I can only guess at what happened in this transfer, but it does sound like the Rangers board trying to deflect the blame from them for Rangers poor financial situation. As far as I can see we didn't pursue the player in the press or anything underhand like that. He may well have said he would like to play in England, but that's not the same as demanding a move ala Tevez. Storm in a tea cup.

The fact it is directors making these statements suggests they are trying to defend themselves. If Jelvaic was forcing through a move surely it would have happened before the last day of transfer window. Whytes 'two fold' argument is flawed. If the club aren't in a position to turn down the offer they received, then whether Jelavic wanted to leave or not is irrelevent.

I know sounds a little shallow saying this but it is nice to be on the receiving end for once! Having said that though it does look like Rangers are looking for a scape goat because of their lack of transfer activity after selling the Jelly! I think someone put something in their Ironbrew if they thought they'd get Holt to replace him!

Whyte isnt going to say he sanctioned the deal simply because Rangers needed to cash in because they are skint is he??..I personally like the Gers and hope they do well, but they are just upset and trying to deflect blame because they know they will struggle to keep the SPL title

I don't care if we stole him from impoverished nuns united, he's one of us now and all of ranger's bleating will be background noise on saturday, you've signed for a real club now.
