Felli's Best Position?

I don't know about you but I have always preferred it when Marouane Fellaini plays further forward. He seems to give too many fouls away when he plays that holding role.

Also you sense that he enjoys his game more when he is pushed forward. Felli has admitted that he loves playing the role especially after the dramatic draw against Man Utd.

David Moyes believes that could be his long term position. What a prospect for Felli and Jela to become to be a twin strike force.

Moyesy said:  "Marouane is probably seen as more of a defensive midfield player. But he's far better when he's joining in and getting forward because he can do a bit of everything.

"He plays for Belgium as one of a three-man midfield. For us, we've tended to play with two midfield players and one ahead. In the main, that has been Tim.

"But I've always known that Marouane can do that job. We had just been looking at the right time to do that."

"Marouane's performance against Manchester United was excellent, but I thought he has been in near enough all games," he said.

"He's been needing to add a goal or two to his game because when he first came he got 10, I think.

"He just needs to add a little bit more and his goal against United, his all-round play, even his setting up for the fourth goal for Steven would have given him a lot of confidence.

"It's difficult to put him into any one box. He's got a goal in him, he does get forward and causes problems, but he's also very good at breaking the game up and doing other things. He's quite good at both jobs."

"You can see Marouane's enjoyed his football much more in the last three or four months," said the Everton boss.

"Young players mature. The decisions you make as a young player are sometimes different than when you get a bit older.

"His form has been good. He's been getting us a couple of goals in recent games, and long may that continue."

Felli is world class as a holding midfield player with the option to push on when he can. When we beat top 4 clubs it's always with him dominating the opposition midfield. Don't confuse this with pushing him forward against man u when we were 2 goals behind and chasing the game. We tried it against the shite in the 2nd half and it didn't work at all. Also if he plays off jelly he will need to up his goal scoring rate and i don't think he is a natural scorer so this will put pressure on him. Lets play to his strengths were he is most effective.

He may give away some fouls and silly passes but he is a proper midfield destroyer probably the best in the league. While he has the legs and after the season run in I don't see why he can not do both jobs if the other midfielders can use their brains and cover where and when needed making it a bit more fluid. Barkley, Gibbo and Rodwell its time to step up so we can unleash the lad.

Can you imagine Felli upfront with Jelly and Manu in the midfield with Pnuts (left), Gibbo (centre right) and Landon (right). FM I need a cigarette after that!

@3, even with Silva, City have same dilemma over whether to play Yaya further forward and every time they do it they look better with his pace and power causing havoc further up even if its not fashionable. Same for us, get up there Felli! Cahill great servant but it's off the bench for me.

This man has a velcro chest! Leave the man up field. Our goals account went through the roof at the end of last season - we had 3/4 successive games scoring 4 goals... When have we ever done that!

He's obviously world class as a holding midfielder and in a more advanced position. Against utd we played class with him further forward- we had them pinned back in their own half for large parts of the game and his presence further forward was a big factor, it takes defending from the front to another level, the amount of ground he covers is unreal and he puts the shits up defenders and midfielders cos he doesnt give them a seconds peace. We've got Gibbo in the holding role and Jack to come back next season. I reckon to get our best players all on the pitch at the same time we need Felli further forward- but that means we need a few goals from him as well. Can he put a few away?

Awesome Pip at 3. I've never read so much shit in such a small space. You ever thought of applying for the manager's job at the shite when they sack him in November?

Firstly @ no2 - you hope distin flops? great attitude to have there, u hope one of our best players over the last two years flops. isnt it better that all 2 CB play well and we have to choose between 3 outstanding performers instead of one them been shit and picking the same 2 no matter how they perform. and @ 3 - basically that who rant is a pile of shit !

As much as I enjoy Fellaini playing up top, I agree with Jim #1 Over the 2nd half of last season I did not honestly see a better holding/central midfielder that Fellaini. He has matured so much since the teenager we signed who got booked nearlly every match. He seems to make time for himself at the majority of times with taking balls on the chest, turning inside/outside and distributing. Even when he doesn't have time to make space a simple cushioned header to a team mate seems to surfice. Keep the mould and promote and give youth a chance, try Baxter, Barkley in the hole if were not playing two up top. COYB...................

Come on, are you serious? Am I the only fan that has got frustrated with watching the team over the past 6-7 years, trying to integrate some sort of passing game, into our incredibly direct style of play, only for the likes of Tim Cahill (playing in the most creative position on the pitch) slowing every move or counter attack down because he can't control the ball first time and has no intelligence or balance whatsoever. Fellaini, similarly to Cahill, is a spoiler, his best attribute is to to hassle the opposition, win back the ball and give it simple to a collegue with better technique than he has. I'm not trying to diminish Fellaini's or Cahill's importance to the team as the job they do is just as important as the next but lets not get hysterical and start comparing Fellaini to the likes of Diego, David Silva, Messi etc, as they are other players with the types of attributes that flourish in this particular role. The other factor to take into account, is that playing Fellaini that far forward, will only encourage the likes of Hibbert and Jagielka to lump long balls forward, especially as we no longer have a player in centre midfield in the mould of Arteta, who would demand that it is played short by offering an option in deeper positions. Out of the current squad, only Ossie's style of play suits the role behind the striker and it is clearly his best position, as he showed in the first half of last season, when all his best performances were when he was given that role.

He has always been awesome as a holding midfield. I'd like to see him and cahill play as two holding midfield or felliani on his own covering for either CB. But i have always liked a 4 - 1- 2- 1- 2 formation. Everton could do with Cahill and Felli holding.. peanuts on the left.. coleman on the right.. osman behined jelly! Felli can play upfront but he is our best holding midfielder. Jonny can't hack it, he is a great CB and I fancy him in a year after Distin goes but will he stay that long? Next season is vital for CBs.. I hope Distin flops and Jonny and jags get regular playing time together! I love Distin though!
