Peanuts Set To Lose Captaincy
Bookmark and Share

As the tug of war goes on between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur for the services of Steven Pienaar, the South African now has other things on his mind.

South Africa boss Gordon Igesund says he will speak to the current Bafana Bafana captain before deciding who to name as skipper for upcoming matches and the 2013 African Nations Cup.

Peanut's performances while wearing the armband have been less than inspiring, leading Igesund to consider a new leader ahead of his first test as national coach, against Brazil.

Igesund made known he was considering a number of candidates last week before back tracking with the assertion that "at this moment, Steven Pienaar is the Bafana captain".

Igesund said: 'What I want to do before stating categorically who will lead the team on the pitch before the next game against Brazil is to have a long chat with Steven.'

'You know some players revel in the role. While others are happier concentrating on their individual performance as far as helping the team is concerned.'

'I'm going to wherever my objectives take me.'

'I'll be hoping to hold discussions with every overseas-based player who is on my list as a potential South African representative, their club managers and their agents.'

'In this way I will have a clearer picture of the talent at my disposal and know how to blend the overseas-based players with the local products in the PSL.'

In other words, time is up for Peanuts and he is choosing a new Captain.
